James Cameron is THE MAN! He looks so cool here. I don't see how you can call him an "asshole" when you watch JC do interviews like this. He's confident. Not arrogant. Those are two very different things. Given the enormous success of Titanic and Avatar, Cameron has every reason to be confident.

James Cameron said it himself the best. We should gain an emotional reaction from Avatar, and translate that emotional response into action. I know many people who have received an emotional response, yet they have moved on... It's disappointing.

A spectacular visual experience unlike anything you've seen before. It's the experience, more than the story, that's worth celebrating here. For all its powerful technologies, Avatar can't get out from under its essential cardboardness. Alternates between a slurry of Franz Marc expressionism and the most elaborate Thundercats episode ever made When all the hype and hullabaloo about Avatar calms down, we will be left with a film that's no masterpiece, but still well worth seeing.

Yeah, but there's the Berlin Film Festival, The Rotterdam Film Festival, The London Film Festival, The Sydney Film Festival, The Melbourne Film Festival, The Cannes Film Festival, et al. Which all give awards, and it's a minor technicality, but the Oscars are actually called the AAMPAS Awards, that's the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I don't think anyone has called it the GREATEST international film award, it's just the most heavily sponsored. Usually...

@TheBoomViper most critics have said that it's really nothing special in terms of plot or story. just that it's an un-deniable technical achievement, and for many critics this has been enough to either overlook the story, or perhaps they didn't find the story as bad as I did. but nobody in their right mind could consider it a grandiose achievement in any area besides technology and visuals.

I loved the movies that you mentioned. I just wanted to see your taste in movies. I like Cameron`s movies, yes, but there are others i like more than him: Kubrick, Tarantino, Almodovar, Scorsese... to name a few. So i`m not such a big fan, but i like the fact that he`s a perfectionist and a very creative person. Oscars don`t mean shit...well, in 90% of the cases, the movies that won an oscar, are good, at least from what i`ve seen, maybe not overall good, but got oscars for certain aspects.

Avatar isn't overrated. It was just overhyped is all. I saw it opening day, so I wasn't bombared with hype before seeing it, because nobody saw it before me. And from that point of view, I loved it. Though I will admit, it's not my "favourite" James Cameron movie. My favourites are still Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Aliens. Those are some of the best movies out there. :)

a bold and imaginative vision brought low by a script that plays it very, very safe And for the epic battle at the end, well let me just say it's as believable as the Ewoks beating the Empire at the end of Return of the Jedi. It's a remote-control movie experience, a high-tech "wish you were here" scribbled on a very expensive postcard. The film gets the closest any has to fulfilling the 3-D format's fundamental mission of creating a new, immersive way of looking at movies.

To be honest I didn't read the article. But I was trawling through you tube clips one day and I happened upon Harlan Ellison talking about the whole incident, and then subsequently read about it possibly in Wikipedia. But the biggest thing that convinced me it was true was the enormous credit that is pasted onto the end of Terminator. It was when Harlan Elison approached him only did he fess up.

I`m just talking about The Terminator 2, i don`t care about the rest. It`s got like 4 oscars or something, anyway. Not really a masterpiece, in the true sense, i got carried away there, but nonetheless, for most of us, an incredible movie, for it`s time and for it`s genre. And yeah, Titanic is an epic movie, whoever disagrees, doesn`t know the meaning of the word epic...Anyway, this was strictly about Cameron and his oscars. Tell me 3 of your favorite movies. I`m serious. Cheers.

if it runs out of imagination and even some credibility when it comes to the plot, well, there is still enough on the screen to qualify as entertaining eye candy Nothing destroys a decent movie more than calling it great, and while this one's a little better than decent, it's definitely a long way from great Action-heavy epic has dazzling effects, familiar story. For all its flaws as art, Mr. Cameron has served up functional entertainment with a gigantic price tag

"Terminator 2 - Judgement day" was the peak of his creativity and by my opinion the peak in film industry by any criteria (True masterpiece). He created parallel reality with enormous details and background and 100s and 100s of hours of expensive movie material just to make it more realistic in a final cut. "The Terminator" and "Aliens" were fantastic but Avatar is only hi-tech first look make-up lame-hollywood movie.

Avatar was good but the Na'vi learning was really boring, you have to give him credit for creating the whole mythology behind the Na'vi people and Pandora. Best sci-fi in years. He is the only director in history(i think) who can make great acion, great plot, great comedy, great romance, great sci-fi and even great horror.

If it trys to cover philosophical elements without taken story into consideration it weakens the film. If it's a story were the characters don't develop (like Goodfellas) or have any real internal journey (again like Goodfellas) then it weakens the film. Sarah Connor in T1 clearly changes and evolves as a character from the way she is at the start, to how she is at the end of the film.

Avatar is overlong, dramatically two-dimensional, smug and simplistic. In spite of the amazing effects, it's yet another lemon from Cameron... A wonder to behold, a story to forget. And with this, the film decade comes to a disappointing conclusion. Forget dancing with wolves, howzabout doing the Funky Chicken with aliens? Avatar is great to look at, often astonishing and sometimes beautiful. But, oh, is the story pedestrian. Enough toys to please all the kiddies in the audience.

What is the final scene of Goodfellas? Its him talking about how brilliant it was being a gangster and saying how much he preferred it to living a normal life. Showning that has character hasn't morally developed throughout the course of the film. There's no real evolution in his character. He's the same guy he was at the start of the film.

You're talking of a critical flop, my point was that it was his biggest box-office flop. I don't think the winning of an Academy Award negates the fact that most people couldn't stand the corniest ending to a movie ever. And I think he deserved that award - James Cameron has progressed the technology of films possibly more than Kubrick. Who, incidentally, only ever won one academy award; for Best Special Effects. There the comparison ends.

Goodfellas is a well told story with no moral center or purpose. The film has no concept of good or bad. In The Godfather it at least shows the characters decent into evil, Goodfellas is ambivalent to there behavior and morality itself. The fact is it has become popular to attack Cameron due to his success. But T1 is a masterpiece and a perfect film.

I did think it was a shitty thing that Cameron tried to do, and get away with. For a long time I thought he was the 'king of sequels', now I just see him for what he is, which is a film technologist who is forward thinking, but my love of films and his come from a different place. I like boring things like story and character, and I think it's evident that Cameron doesn't care about those things, except as vehicles to carry his 'vision', which I think is Scheiße

Okay, I'll leave you with this; Aliens 'borrowed' heavily from the novel Starship Troopers, read it; True Lies was a remake of a french film called La Totale!; as stated Terminator was stolen from Harlan Ellison; Avatar was a live action version of Pocahontas and Fern Gully, and the closest he ever came to actually ever writing an original film was also his biggest flop; the Abyss (Pirahna II we won't even discuss). I don't think cameron would or could deny anything I've said.

Regardless of how I came across, I'm not angry. Film is art, and art is subjective, so like you've suggested, there is no right or wrong when discussing film (that's what makes discussing film fun). Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, so what's the point in getting angry about it? They're nothing more than mere opinions. Moreover, in short, Avatar was a giant "tree hugger" movie. If you can't practice what you preach, then you probably shouldn't be preaching at all.

im not really a cameron fan , i felt avatars plot was a bit thin and relied more on a focus on the visual element of the film. I also feel the film went on for too long and within the first hour i was bored by the shallow story line and the amazing special effects ceased to amaze me.
