And a fine actor. I actually cried at one scene - very rare for me - it was Season 4, Episode 7. Can't imagine anyone else in the role of Don Draper.

My history teacher told out class, "period films [or series] say more about the time that they are made in then the time that they are made about". Made Men is the closest thing I have seen that gets away from that.

That’s true of history in general. It’s always revisionist & says more about the current time :)

Don's fairness and kindness face to face were great qualities. He got angry but didn't judge. He didn't hit his kids. Remember how he held baby Gene with little Sally on his knee to help her understand "he's just a baby"?

Don was a piece of shit... But hey nobodies perfect
@danielbergeespe16365 жыл бұрын
@@dlo5640 if u think about it Don helped peggy to follow her dreams and he also helped her get in the position she ended up in. she became a leader and that was because of Don. Don was nice to his family (except betty but betty was kind of a bitch against Don too and in this time the show is set in the woman must respect her man and the man was more free) so you can kinda understand his point of view. He traveled alot to LA to help his "fake" family and gave a lot of money to them because he had guilt. Don was also nice to his secretaries compared to many other men at that time, he was also a gentleman. So with that said Don was not the biggest piece of shit in that time and i would say hes a pretty decent guy

I've experienced bigger pieces of shit throughout my working life. The 60's is really not that far off. In fact, technology has changed way faster than people.

Ive followed his career maybe not super closely, but steadily over the last few years. He's always seemed like a gracious, humble, down-to-earth guy who's just happy to be doing what he's doing. Definitely hope he can get more roles on the big screen, especially after Mad Men is over.

I genuinely feel like it is one of the best shows at representing racial/political issues. So organic, realistic and reflective without having to put it front and centre with some strobe lights around it in case you missed it.
@jonnyharding36462 жыл бұрын
@@lol-zp1ps that's the point though, isn't it? If you look at how the attitudes were towards the elevatstaff, or how even when they have black people working in the office, the idea of a black woman working the front desk is like still the worst thing in the world to Cooper, it shows you a more realistic view of what it was like for black Americans in the working environment at that time

I really appreciate Jon Hamm answering the first question about racial and political issues that is portrayed on the show...As an African-American, I was turned-off by the show because of the "lack diversity", but I had to realize, like Jon said ,that's what happened during that time--and it wasn't pretty...Now, I'm a huge fan of the show, and any other reservations I had before about Mad Men are nonexsistent!

@angelacarleton95755 жыл бұрын
Alessandro - how can they maintain their concentration in what they say if they drink "real liquor." No shows or movies can allow that - remember it takes good acting to believe that is what they are drinking - so give them credit for that. Especially when Don Draper gets drunk and has too much booze - that is great acting!
@JamesNalacar2 жыл бұрын
This is actually the first time I've heard that the cigarettes and alcohol were fake and honestly I'm relieved to hear that because earlier I always thought that they were real and I was genuinely concerned for some of the actors' health XD

It's confirming that he comes across as thoughtful (and considerate, I thought the interviewer was a stiff) and intelligent as he does. His role as Don/Dick is complex and convoluted, and he plays it to perfection. I don't think an actor with average intelligence, or less, could pull that off.

@tramaine1981 Well, yes. I agree. But even during that time, ad-men were particularly attuned to the tenor of the times. That includes the civil rights movement. I know this series is set in a specific venue with a specific point of view.....but they have marginally addressed topical issues in previous episodes....I would like to see some representation of African-American characters. Even in the context of the period. Or especially.
