My father was talented painter & as a kid I would draw using family pictures. I was teased and I quit. My son grew up to be an artist and life got in my way. Now at the age of 61yo I'm picking up my tools again for my own pleasure. I did put my talents towards colors and being creative with sewing, jewelry making, etc. Thank you for the encouraging tips and an excellent tutorial.

I was told i couldn’t draw by an art teacher when i was thirteen and stupidly believed him and gave up.. I decided to give it another go at age 70 and with the help of Matt and others i am making progress. Good luck to you in your efforts. It is never too late.

Oh, that was so exciting to read! I love this instructor. He's a solid artist with a really wonderful range of skills and to my mind he's one of those who understand and practice teaching as an art as well. So how did that work space turn out? Are you enjoying your work and growing as an artist?✨🤗✨

More tips 1, enjoy it, After all it is our hobby. 2, follow along you tube tutorials, these help. 3, show your family as you go, ask them what they think, but ask them to be honest and point out where you might have something wrong...sometimes we concentrate so much that our eyes go tired,so they may see what we don't. 4, use your phone! You can spend 30,40,50 or more hours on your drawing, based on tip 3, at the end of my drawing session, I take a photo of my work so I can look at it the following day. I guarantee you will see things that you was happy with the previous day but dislike from the photo, you can then correct it on your next session. 5, as in the video, don't just look but observe. The opening line of a book I read started " if you draw it wrong it's because you haven't observed it long enough" . 6, don't be afraid to use tools outside of the art world, ie, q-tips are great for blending/shading. 7,further to tip 3, listen to people who are critical of your drawing and ask them why they don't like it, you will learn more from them rather that the 99% who politely say "Oh that's good"....but never take it to heart! Hope these extra tips help any of you, happy drawing all.

I've seen videos that last 24 minutes on Drawing Tips and I learned more in the seven minutes than I did in those longer ones, where the visual artist doesn't really know how to teach to draw. They just can and are making a KZbin video. Tip #2 and Tip #9 were my favorite. At times, I feel bad about having to use a reference, but when I don't the subject I'm drawing is not representative of the real world in a way I think it should be, even for cartoon illustrations I use a reference. Tip 9 is great too because I have a tendency to draw a tight, almost perfect line, then erase. Then repeat, erase. Drawing loosely is faster and gives you more confidence.

1. Drawing is a skill - need to learn 2. At least 50% observation 3. Use Resources - use photo take, references, etc 4. Find basic shapes 5. Use full range of value (dark brightly) 6. Use line quality (thicker or thinner lines) 7. Use same drawing style for entire pic 8. Know your medium 9. Loosen up a little - try multiple thin lines to find correct one 10. Practice, practice, practice!!!

This was very helpful! I think my greatest weakness is observation. I "think" I know what an object looks like and try to draw it, and then am discouraged that it doesn't look right. Sort of like, "I've seen lots of trees, surely I can draw one from memory." Nope!
