@thedollhousechannel2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting this video! 😁 I love this topic because much like you, I cannot wrap my head around why some plants are so expensive, especially the mostly green "rare" plants. While I do not believe in price shaming sellers, nor do I believe in telling people how to spend their money, I do believe there is a limit to what is "fair" to charge for houseplants. In my opinion, there is no reason why a 6 inch (or smaller) potted plant should cost as much as 50 Nintendo Switches, a brand new car like a Honda Civic, or a year of College depending on where you live. When you put it into a perspective like this, it seems crazy, but some people are fine with paying 20,000 dollars for a tissue cultured Monstera. I'm just hoping the super high prices for the rare plants don't encourage hobbyists to start overcharging for common plants.
@phytosexual2 жыл бұрын
I have no problems with people selling 'rare plants', by all means they are not a necessity, and are not the only plants we can grow. I just like to put things into perspective for consumers.

@@phytosexual I just found a hanging pot of Cebu for $11 and Manjula at Lowe's for $16. It is STUNNING. I think some people haven't really seen just how beautiful it is, not up close. I had a tiny bit from a trade a year ago and it didn't do well. And it wasn't as beautiful. But this pot I just got is really something...it truly looks like all the green and white variegated types on one plant...and then add in the beauty of the half leaf variagation... half solid green and half white marbled...and the wavy/crinkled leaf aspect, it is gorgeous and I'm in love with it. I did do a little spendy thing and went for the global green online. Sadly it has been held up by USPS...the seller sent it first class 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️(it was supposed to be free shipping) and I'm bummed. It's been in the mail 11 days. In a box. In the dark. Supposed to be several nodes on each rooted piece. I bought 2. Oy! I'm afraid it will be DOA...and when I inquired the seller was like oh just file for missing package with USPS and I was like is it insured? Ummm no. Well then that won't do me much good! It is supposed to be delivered TODAY. 🙏🤦♀️ I'm praying somehow this thing survived...and I don't need to try to get the seller to "make it right" as she says she would do...but hasn't seemed too experienced with shipping nor has she seemed overly concerned. 🤞🤞🤞 🤦♀️ Oy! Those Walmart baskets look like Philodendron brasil sooo.... I'll pass because I've got plenty of that (not saying it is because I can't tell from the Pic, but it very much does look like it)

The 2nd plant you spoke abt- smthing melon- I think it's coccinia as we know it here in India.its a common vegetable here. We make a dry stir fry out of it to go with rice or chapati (Indian flat bread)..we slice them in thin round slices n toss them in oil n add salt, turmeric and cook till it's softened but still crunchy n it tastes yum..but ofcourse it might not be up to everyone's taste palette..

People c;Leary need science. These varieties are all the same species which means that the variegation is not necessarily stable.
@phytosexual3 жыл бұрын
Right? A little science goes a long way. I really prefer species in their natural form. They grow much better, and have zero chance of changing. I absolutely love my Philo Melanochrysum. Thank you for the comment 💚

I just don't see the big deal about the pink princess. I'd buy a full 6in. pot of heart leaf philodendron over the princess any day! I'll wait till she gets to a big box store for a cheaper price.

Maybe costa will release it.

OMG, I bought two stems of global green pothos a few months ago, and they were so big I cut them up and I have about 6 plants ready to pot. I paid 12 bucks, free shipping, and I just looked at how the prices have shot up while watching your video, ridiculous! I wanted them because I thought it would be fun to have all the different kinds of pothos, I also bought a manjula which I believe was 10 bucks. I would NEVER pay the prices they are asking now. I am in my 60's and have been gardening for a looooong time, first seed I planted was basil in my mom's kitchen and it got huge! LOL I've NEVER seen such hype about plants in all these years. If people pay the prices, they will stay up, don't they realize that???? Anyway, I would like a dupe video because I would love to find a large leaf, velvety plant and there are so many out there, but again, I refuse to pay a ton of money. BUT, if you want to splurge and buy yourself that certain plant you want, once in a while, no problem, like anything else. Just use common sense. I also just started watching your videos and I find your sense of humor so dry!! And when it comes to plants, you certainly know your stuff!! Thanks!

Woow, I did not expect Hoya australis Lisa on that list. Here in Germany they are super cheap. I got my full plant for like 8 Euros (which is around 8 Dollar, too). Crazy. Love the video idea! It's become such a weird hype to buy super expensive but unimpressive plants.

I also grew cucamelons for the first time this year and was also disappointed. They are so cute but they aren’t as tasty as I had hoped. I think they are a little better if you pick them before they are full size (like you would other gourds/squash/etc.), but still not planning on planting them again next year.
@phytosexual2 жыл бұрын
They were so vigorous too! Good idea on picking them early though. They were just all seeds for me. No crunchy delicious cucumber flesh whatsoever.

@@phytosexual I know, right?!? They look like they would make great cocktail pickles, but none of the recipes I tried could make them appealing.

With Ceropegia, String of hearts, here's the deal - it needs light, and I mean lots of it, to maintaine the silver. I have one, it grows like hell (tripled the lenght in about 1.5 month), but only after putting it udner lights, it started showing again this silver leafs. So, give her time (and light), she is worth it :D and here in Poland it is rather cheap baby :)
