I actually really appreciated this video, even though you don't like speaking negatively about plants. I think it's a very realistic video and a good change from the haul/shopping videos that I see so much on KZbin. I'd like to see more plant KZbinrs getting real about the hobby.

It would be cool to see a video recommending alternatives to these plants eg. Don't buy a brandtianum - buy a siltepecana el Salvador. Don't buy a calathea white fusion - buy a picasso peace lily. Don't buy a curtisii - buy a hoya mathilde etc...

The only success I’ve seen with Brandi’s are growing them on a moss pole, they apparently love to climb more than trail bc otherwise they just grow stupid tiny leaves. As for the curtisii it’s done much better since putting it under a glass humidity dome! In my recent experience, most Hoyas like more water and fertilizer than people expect.

In my experience (having owned many varigated plants), varigated plants often revert when it's not getting enough sun or light. The green part of the leaves contain the chlorophyll that intake the sunlight. In response to the less than ideal amount of sun, the plant leaves will start to revert back to its full green leaves to intake more sunlight. Maybe try putting your varigated plants in more direct light and see if that makes a difference. Love the video btw!

I loved this video. You are so sweet and honest. I’ve struggled with the Hoya curtsii to the point of putting it outside. It seems happier outside but still in North Carolina it is going to have to come inside eventually. I have a piper crocatum and it is sooo beautiful. Luckily I spent $25 for a decent size and it is such a thirsty plant. It also develops these crystal dots behind the leaves. Not sure what that is. I left it for 2 weeks without watering and it came back luckily!! Please make more videos like this! Reality of plant life 🌱🌱

Wow! That’s amazing! Once I figured out how to properly water the Hoya curtsii and the right spot in my home, the plant started growing tremendously. The piper is another story. I had one die after overwatering it. I bought a smaller one and put it in a grow tent. It seems to really like moderate water and high humidity. It’s so funny how one person’s trouble can be another person’s treasure!

I had problems with the Brandtianum at first too, the leaves shrank in size veeeery quickly. What I did was I changed the soil, it's very airy with about 1/4 of both orchid bark and perlite, cut back the shoots I think two times to stimulate growth and put it right inside the window, and suddenly it grows like crazy, producing beautiful big leaves. Worked out for me, if you have room in a sun facing window you should try, can't hurt if so far it went downhill;)

I have also found that they just thrive extremely root bound lol I had got two mystery rare corm boxes off Etsy and months later after being in stratum I've potted them in my chunky mix and they're all root bound and thriving. They did amazing root bound in the stratum also and pon and dirt lol I tried each. But being root bound was the trick it seems.

I'm an underwaterer so I have to use a substrate that is more water retentive then what is commonly recommended. Usually 50% coco coir and then a mix of chunky amendments. I also keep Calathea and other thirsty plants in a shallow tray of water. I know common knowledge recommends NOT keeping plant's "feet" wet but it is a lifesaver for me.

Thanks for being so open regarding the struggles of some plants. We love them and will likely have them even though they will break our hearts! LOL But I appreciate hearing about the challenges - it's helpful hearing how real the struggle can be. I have a Calathea White Fusion and once I accidently watered it with tap water and it FREAKED OUT. It dropped all its leaves but two. It's been slow to recover but it's finally, finally looking fuller again.

Hi Ashley, Many thanks for this informative video! I have owned a few of the plants you mentioned and my experiences were identical to yours. Since plants are a love and a hobby of mine I tend to steer away from some of the more fussy ones although I have on some occasions brought home a plant simply because I couldn’t resist its beauty. 🥰. My mind knows better but my heart overrides my better judgment! 😵‍💫. I have had my Curtisii for three years and she has not grown much so I just love her for being her petite pretty self. The larger baskets of this plant are so gorgeous ! Take care and.happy growing. 👌🪴🥰

So for the burle Marx Var I recommend to chop it up. Look at the stem. Look for a variegated stem. Once it grows that one will have more variegation…. Mine is so crazy 😮😍😍 I’ve been selectively propagating and I have sooo much white now

Melano struggled even on a moss pole. I propagated it and the 3 big pieces, they are doing better (rerooting in tree fern gave me thicker, healthier roots). Splendid has none of the problems with leaf rotting or ripping , it can grow decent with just a stick and is overall very forgiving. Can recomment it to everyone. Pieper Sylvaticum is growing great, as long as i don't delay watering ! In an aroid mix i have to water twice a week or it starts looking like trash. Self watering pots with pon or stratum work for me a lot better. This and the Colocasia Pharaoh Mask are the thirstiest plants i have ever seen ! Philodendron Lupinum, another problem. i tried everything, aroid mix, self watering, moss pole, high humidity...nothing worked. I have one left and if it doesn''t get its act together, it will go in the trash. Calatheas are doing well for a while but then they start looking bad. I found that Maranthas are a lot easier because of their growth pattern, whenever one is looking not so great is so easy to take a few cutting and start over . They root super fast and they seem to be doing good in soil and in semi hydro. Whenever a plant struggles i found a system that works for me almost every time. Propagate, put it in a bin or greenhouse cabinet until it has a few leaves and then i move some to self watering and some to aroid mix. After 2 weeks or so i move them to room humidity and hope for the best. I find that the babies i grow from a small size are better adapted to my conditions and are doing a lot better compared to the big plants i buy from a store. I was able to save quite a lot of plants this way, the only problem i have is that too many survive and i am struggling with space and time🤣

I got a reverted burle Marx philodendron for $3 and I don't quite care if it ever gets any variegation, but there's a slight chance as the stems have a lot of it, so I might prop it when it's older and see. Def not worth the high tag but a beautiful plant even reverted.

I have a Hoya Curtisii that sits just below my kitchen window. I've had it for several years and it is lush and healthy I am happy to say. It apparently loves the kitchen. However, it has taken years for it to bloom and it finally did several months ago and has continued to bloom off and on. But the blooms are weird on this particular plant. They are very small and not so great looking. They also kind of smell funny to the point to where my family has asked what stinks in the kitchen. I end up just snipping them off. Maybe it is not this way with other Hoya Curtisii plants, but it seems to be with mine...

Thanks for your thoughts Ashley. That $90 Variegated Alocasia Macrorrhiza is STUNNING!! But I agree with you about passing up the opp to buy expensive plants knowing that they are finicky. Totally with you on the Brandti and the Burle Marx Variegated ( thankfully I was gifted both of them so didn't pay the big bucks) although I honestly believe it's because I haven't given them a pole to climb on. They are getting PLENTY of filtered light & humidity as Sydney is naturally quite humid atm AND I have a humidifier next to them. So as we are now moving ever closer to spring I will be transferring them to a moss pole and pray they take off. I'm really sorry about your Ph. Melano. I've steered clear of them, the Verro and the Splendid (in fact all the hybrids) purely because of the attention they need. Plus I don't have that much space in my house. Would really appreciate more videos like this one 🙏🏼 Your frankness is so refreshing and credible! Thank you 💚

I love this because it’s good to know we’re not alone in the struggle. Although I like the discolor & the crotatum (pink) I never bought. I can’t find most uncommon houseplants locally so Inhabe to go online & I think some plants look great in a photo but would just not survive in my care! This is from a calathea lover. I have lost so many and continue to replace to my husband’s disdain But it’s trial and error? Maybe talk about the struggle you had with a plant but brought it back. I feel there isn’t much content about bringing a plant back “from death” and how long that takes or even what starting over taught you. How to keep white fusion alive. Keep on pebble tray where it constant surrounded by 19:00 water, in a bathroom with a huge window where it gets all day indirect light. And spray once every 2 weeks with regardless. They super needy. 😊

The variegation on my Burle Marx is much more yellow with the dark green. I keep it in a almost full south window with lace curtain at the window to help gently shade the scorching sun. My problem with it is sometimes the leaves come out all yellow. Funny I was just looking at mine and you started talking about it. I was thinking WHAT??? Let me have some of that wine. Too spooky. I also have the all green and I ended up planting them together to save space. My variegated bit was a gifted cutting from a friend. Just two leaves.

I have a variegated Burle Marx - the way to maintain the variegation is to place it under intense growlights and cut any leaf that grows without the variegation. That’s what I did and even the cuttings retained the variegation. But if I removed a cutting from intense light, it does revert to green.

In my experience, Philodendron Brandtianum only works on a pole or trellis. It’s the only way I’ve managed to size mine up.

I’ve been wanting to get a Brandi but I’m not sure I can provide the environment it needs. I live in Santiago, Chile and we’re nearing spring so the humidity will be around 50% and probably get lower as summer comes closer and I don’t have a greenhouse cabinet or humidifier so I don’t think it’ll be a good idea 😔

For me I would say stingray alocasia. Like the taro, it gets really bad spidermites and they just never go away (even though I have it outside), and Thai constellation. Partly because it is so over hyped and expensive and people are getting taken advantage of, and because they are SO EASY to rot. They don't seem to be forgiving plants. On a different note, I would put the hoya outside. My curtsii is growing insane since putting it outside this summer. It's on the eastern wall of the building. I have it hanging on a lattice that I attached to the side of my wall. It gets morning sun, and it has doubled in size this summer alone.

Amen to the calathea white fusion being difficult!!👍👍 I haven't seen any sign of spider mites but will check again as my vision is not the best! I, too enjoyed this video. I have the brandtianum in a hanging basket and it is doing well, just will have to check the leaf size!! 🤞🤔😂

Thank you for this video! I would love to get a variegated frydek but I just can’t for the spider mites! I agree that some plants are just “outdoor” plants and you really have to work to keep them happy indoors (begonia calathea alocasia). I am struggling with p. Luxurians. I also don’t think I’m a moss pole person! If it won’t size up with a stake….

I’m having the worst luck ever with a melanochrysum, and trying to get a Hoya latifolia and pubicalyx Hawaiian to root. I don’t get what I’m doing wrong! I put the cuttings in water, and they started to get roots, but then they stopped after I had to give them a sulfur treatment for flat mites. Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yup the philodendron Brandi I buy knowing I won’t have it for long. It’s stupid hard to get it to grow right. 😩 I just have it to see it as it slowly dies or the leafs get smaller and smaller. It’s so beautiful though so I just wait until I can get it for $14 at my local Home Depot.

Great video. I have experienced the same things with these same plants. My Mickey Mouse Alocasia is in a greenhouse, and even so has only one leaf on it. My Brandy continues to have those ridiculous deformed leaves even on a moss pole in 60% humidity. My white fusion is dwarfed even in a terrarium. I have a Melanocrysum that doesn't size up. The only ones that are doing well that you mentioned are ones I don't have. It definately is a popular theme with these plants.

So I grow the mandevilla here in panhandle of Florida but I can’t get them to overwinter outside in a pot guess I need to bring them in the garage. I think yours are on pots do they survive the winter outside in Houston. As for the passion vines did you grow them from seed or buy them at a nursery? I’d like to try the 2nd passion vine you showed which had the fruit but don’t think I’ve seen it in any nurseries here
