I’ve been an HVAC service technician for 16 years. (16 years and the learning never stops) . Excellent Trade to be in. What Josh said about the different specialties is true. In HVAC alone, there are lots of avenues one can choose to go down and specialize in and make a great living.

I live in CT and I’m looking to get into trade school. The trade school I want to go to does not have HVAC so I need to decide should I start with plumbing first or electrician license first. And is there anyway to get licensed sooner lets say overlaps hours by being a plumber yet still honor those hours for HVAC license?

How do I break in? I went to trade school back in 2012 for HVAC and refrigeration. I looked for a job for two years; I even worked for free temporarily on two occasions until I gave up. Is there anything that I can do, or where do I go?

I have a question for ya. I was quoted $2000 to replace a variable speed blower motor for an American standard heat pump hvac. I suspect I’m being overcharged. I’d like to know your opinion.
@calebpruitt7235
@calebpruitt7235 8 ай бұрын
It possible, I could see it with it being the brand it is and variable speed, size of motor depends too. There’s some other variables too. If they’re not a dealer for it, and buy the exact motor from a supplier that doesn’t sell American Standard, that supplier would pay more to get the motor and then would sell it for more to the company quoting you. There’s tons of variables. I condemned an ECM blower motor on an old 5 ton York unit. Got a quote from 3 different suppliers and just our cost to get the motor for that old unit was $1100+. The motor itself wasn’t bad, just the module so we got a new module for it considerably cheaper. Many guys just say the motor is bad when you can get a module for it. Easier for them to just change the motor.

Thank you for your response. It is an American standard Gold series. Right at 10 years. I can understanding paying a little more for the part; however when they charged me $44 for a fuse that code only $1.25 maybe, I become suspicious from thereon.

Depends on state regulations and your goals. Where I live, you need a Master electrician license to have your own electrical business. That's 6-8 yrs in the field working under someone's license (school counts as 2 years). 4-5 years to journeyman, another 4 years to qualify for Master's exam. But you can sit for the HVAC contractors exam after 2 years in an accredited school. You still may not be ready for your own business, but you can get there faster. If you really like electrical, you will learn some of that in HVAC. Then you could work for a multi-craft company and learn electrical on the job.

More demand for HVAC and HVAC-R. You can also get through schooling in ten weeks through some night schools ,though learning never stops. HVAC projected growth being through the roof will always insure a shortage of technicians, and insure great pay. You'll have classes of 50+ for electricians to 15 for HVAC/HVAC-R. All kinds of certification can be acquired down the line to increase income , and advancement to higher positions as well. The specialty tools can be fun as well.lol

It's certainly not for everybody.... Some companies are lousy to work for. The heat is stuck on in the middle of summer time in the van, it still has studded snow tires on it, half the dashboard lights are on.

The oldest guy in my class was 56. If you're considering a 25 year bid with a union you'd still be retiring at 67 if your apprenticeship was through them. If you have any construction background you'll probably be ahead of most of the new guys, and if you're comfortable with electronics and heat load calculations / larger system designs you may be at a desk by 55 making solid money too. Wasn't much younger myself when I made the transition, why wait and risk regret. Jump at the opportunity if you can :)

Labor shortage will continue to grow. Too many blue collar jobs lack proper pay. Even made worse when low skill jobs, like Mcdonalds, start paying a little to closely to jobs that require skill and high risk. As it stands, can you make good money? Maybe, with a bunch of overtime, but that IT guy can also without the overtime...and without the risk, without the heat, and in air conditioning. They have to fix pay.

Do you need to be good at math to be a HVAC technician

There are some calculations done but you may be able to do some things without math skills.

Good at basic math for any trade. Read a tape measure. Some digital equipment will show decimals you would need to round up or down. They are positions in HVAC just changing filters and cleaning units, no math there at all, just common sense. But yes calculations are done as a Tech. For subcooling and superheat. Some newer very expensive equipment actually do this for you some through phone apps. HVAC is always technically progressing...
