I'm an old head I prefer a free estimate for a change out based on the actual work that is required. Set pricing typically means your paying more than you should.

The company I currently use to service my HVAC; doesn't offer online pricing; they do send a technitian to the home and troubleshoot unit and give cost of repairs/replacement! I'm OK with that because I know I'll get an accurate cost of such!

I'm old skool but I don't expect anyone to do anything for free. The "no cost estimate" overhead will be built into the estimate, somewhere. Anyone taking basic cost accounting understands there are expenses attached to every asset and service, and recovering those is key to staying in business. So a fee to drive to my house, inspect or trouble shoot, and make a repair estimate? Yes. The tech has already provided a service and tech and company should be compensated for the work, providing a stocked service van, and the overhead associated with all of that. Online pricing is tough with so many variables - every building is a little different, sometimes access is difficult or impossible without finish or structural work, some change outs might require upgrades to electrical or other services. A home visit would be needed for an accurate price. If the company has a separate sales staff, they're on commission and I'd expect a "no direct charge" estimate. If the same tech that does repairs also designs and installs, I'd expect to pay some kind of fee for the time needed to evaluate the existing work, plan the demo and install, and specify the new equipment. Customers who say "I've already done the diagnosis" are typically not correct in their diagnosis. They should be charged a double fee. ;)

We do a free estimate for change out, but if you want to repair, we will diagnose it. Why you trust someone else’s faulty diagnosis thinking wind up getting your view bomb from ever everyone of the peoples family? 35 one star reviews will hurt you even if those people are all in different states.
