Macio Parker was the King of circular breathing. Saw him w/ Prince at Staples Ctr in LA in 2004, had the worst seats in the house but Macio came out in the middle of the show before the Purple Paisley one did his solo jazz bit w/ the rotating barstool w/ gooseneck mic. Macio was insane! He hit a note that is still going! (and I’m aware he’s no longer w/ us). His solo was the highlight of the show for me and I was in the one nosebleed section in Staples that’s stage left, way in the back. Didn’t freaking matter. Macio was blowin’ man!

"The average spent on guitars is $10,000" has to be from a survey in the 90's, and is not current, it needs to be updated, and needs to include gear, pedals, amps, straps, cables, etc.

Here's how I look at the cost of being a guitar player or buying expensive gear: How expensive is it to play golf? Say you just spend a few grand on clubs thoughout your life. You also spend 50 bucks a round; another 10 bucks at the driving range. Times that a whole bunch of times and add that all up and what do you get? I'm guessing a similar amount to, or a lot more than they guy who has a really nice guitar collection. Another difference? The guitars still have value; you can't sell the rounds of golf when you're done. What about the guy who is into motocycles, or boating, or cars? Or how about the guy who travels for hunting, or fishing? All hobies get expensive. I think the difference with guitar is fewer people understand it. People freak out because you own X amount of gear but they often don't bat at eye at other things people do.
@joeyvanostrand36553 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%. People don't have a second thought when you finance, at a ridiculous interest rate I might add, a motorhome for $80,000. BUUUTTT..... Open up a guitar case when they are visiting and show them the price tag.... "You paid how much!?! For a piece of wood!!" 🙄

I used to think that I could only have nice gear/guitars if I was going to be in a band and play for money. Meaning investing in the hobby was only worth it if I was going to be in a band and play for others live. Now I have played live a handful of times in my life and hope to again, if the self doubt will quiet itself…What I realized a few years ago after I started letting myself spend money on nice guitars and gear that the that gear and those instruments inspire me to learn more and to play more. I can play for 4-5 hours at a time and lose track of all time and all worries and concerns. I realized that in of itself is enough of a reason to play guitar and to invest in the hobby. After all I know plenty of people that golf and spend equal amounts of money and spend 4 hours on the golf course and they are not entering the PGA anytime soon…so here is to playing live again, but for now the instrument is a healthy escape to learning and a healthy escape to pure enjoyment.

I once got put in charge of band nights at an irish pub in Santa Monica and decided instead of hiring 3 bands plus ourselves for the evening, it would be so cool to book just 2 bands and play for 2 1/2 hours. Forgetting that we weren’t U2 or Iron Maiden or Peter Gabriel, the night ended with us performing every song we’d ever written and alot of improv jams to 1 person who was the drummers boyfriend. It felt self indulgent at an hour and half into our set, and we still had an hour to go. Lmao

Being a professional musician isn't one of my dreams, I just love music... but you said $10k is an average lifetime spend? That's just ludicrous. I spend more than that a year.. and I only started playing again exactly two years ago. I quit playing after 6 months of guitar lessons in the early 80's because the gear sucked. A $200 guitar from today and a snark tuner would have changed all that. But cut to two years ago and I decided to start playing again, so I bought a guitar. I quit golfing and spent as much time as my slightly arthritic hands would let me playing and practicing. Now that I'm 35 years behind those kids that kept playing when I first tried to learn I will ALWAYS feel like an inadequate player. And my age means my hands only have an average of a couple hours of playing/practice in them. I just need to learn how to practice because I won't get another 35 years of d*cking around a few hours a day to get good.

@@CasinoGuitars I was in that situation one day back in 2017 at the most famous guitar shop in Nashville. I drove down the street and spent my $2,000 at Walter Carter’s store, and in the last four years since that day I’ve spent over $10,000 at Carter Vintage. I’ve hardly even been in that other more famous shop.

The really famous store is so sanitized now…I still love going in, but mainly just to look. Carter’s is way more fun to be in. And they really don’t care who’s picking up most of the $10k+ guitars. Last time I was in, there were two or three bands, a bunch of gawkers, and a bunch of regular folks who have the credit limits to buy most everything they have on the floors. Way more accessible-but without a 1990’s credit card ad. ;-)

@@smelltheglove2038 I think open carry is legal in MD with a permit. It’s just that this part of Maryland is extremely liberal and also quite urban, so most people will be rather uncomfortable with folks walking around with guns visible. It’s probably not in Chuck Levin’s best interest to allow it, as they’ll likely scare away a lot of their clientele. The area where the shop is has been greatly built up over the last 5 or 10 years, and there’s a lot more people living there now, so it’s probably changed a lot since the Casino Folks were last there.

Being poor,,,,yep, sold some stuff i wish i still had. Practice,,,,i used to practice things from memory for about an hour before going to work, late '90s early '00. Handy when invited to a band reunion. "Flirtin' With Disaster". Made the set. '05. Who knows, Man On The Silver Mountain should have, too. Smoke did :) ha, 20 hours average a weekend just jamming with my stereo before a move. Half way decent then ;)

Indifference describes almost every guitar shop that has ever existed in Portland Oregon! LOL ! I vote hell yes for Jonathan strapped with a hogleg! Nothing says can I sell you a guitar like a good ol’ revolver! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Always feel like I've not practiced enough. No matter how much I play, but never going to stop.😉

Ragnarok Rules!! I often wonder if I knew the language if it would be better or worse? Maybe subtitles are a great substitution for good media. You guys should have Eric try it, lol Maybe in Porteguese... Hi Baxter & John

I never realized how erotic string changing can be until I watched this video. I'm going to get some candles.

Ten thousand may be the average lifetime spending on guitars, but I figure that a whole lot of rock stars die before thirty. So, I figure that if I've got a lot more lifetime then what I'm spending isn't as out of control.

top creepiest meeting, deaf lady, being very friendly, shouting if we want some heroin just meet her in the alley... Ironically this is a club that was bellow or real close (not sure) to where Layne Staley lived and eventually died.

I mostly watch these videos to hear Baxter reference OASIS constantly. Because he’s right- OASIS is the best

There is this guitar shop in the Isle of Wight, literally NOTHING in it is for sale. NOTHING. More like a showin off my collection shop than a guitar shop.

I never change strings without a glass of bourbon served neat right there on the bench with me

I never minded gigs where no one shows up- it's free practice! Better than renting a space. And you can just get a beer there instead of stopping at the store beforehand.

Hearing loss from working in a machine/fabrication shop is more depressing.

Lost my hearing in 1977 standing in front of Ted Nugent's rig. Now at 64...haven't heard cymbals or things like tambourines in many, many years. Also harder to hear women...which is a good thing most f the time.
