+Dannie Pushkin This is exactly what I've been worried about. I've always loved aeroplanes and played FSX for the whole of my childhood. However, I have been presented with the opportunity of taking on more financially rewarding careers in business. Do I chase my passion for aviation or the excellent money, reputation and positive social-impact offered by the business world? I can't do both. In my humble opinion, commercial airline pilots are simply skilled bus drivers; and I don't want to reach the end of my life doing something that really wasn't that special. I don't know what route to take! Would I like the chicken of the egg? The pan or the fire? Impossible decision! I'm completely lost; what wolf to feed? What dream shall live?
@danniepushkin58497 жыл бұрын
Definitely stick with business. And the best thing is that you DON'T have to abandon your dream of flying! Its just that enslaving yourself to the stress and financial hardship of flying commercially for arguably the most volatile and unstable business model - airline, is not the best way of going about it. Go with any profession that will give you the financial freedom and opportunity to actually ENJOY aviation and flying, so you can appreciate the joy of flight in all its fulness! P.S. completely off the topic, piece of advice for you, if you care to listen - I would review your nickname. Not that I really care if you think whether Jesus Christ have lived or not, its just your tag-name doesn't make you look very bright. In today's world anybody with any exposure to ancient history can tell you that Jesus Christ was a historical figure. Now, where do you go from here is totally your choice and your choice only.

Joe, you mentioned having standby apartments so you can stay close by the home base when on call. I thought pilots (not even in the same airline!) frequently share a rented house close by so they can run to the airport if called. I've heard of flight attendants doing this, especially if they're trying to build up seniority at the airline. I was told this is more common in SE Asia. Three or four female flight attendants could share a ONE bedroom apartment so they can be close by when the airline calls them.
@aspiringcaptain4 жыл бұрын
My uncle went to the US for flight school and finish within a year (it would’ve been less if it wasn’t for bad weather conditions in Texas) and when he got his commercial license, United Airlines and American Airlines sent him a ton of job offers but he just declined them all because he wanted to come back home to be with us 🥰 And he ended up getting a job in the biggest regional airline. I’m not saying this to brag but to say that if he managed to do that, anyone can!

Despite the nay sayers replying to you, you are correct. I was discussing this with my Flight surgeon. It’s well considered in the aviation medical world that rates of cancer are high in aircrew. It’s quite possible that in many years the environment will be considered similar to working in a coal mine as regards safe working environments. Your body is decompressed and compressed regularly, you’re forced to sit for hours at an altitude of 6-8000 feet, breathing synthetically humidified engine bleed air. The cumulative radiation exposure over decades. The diet and endocrine system are affected by the food you’re given and the times of day you’re awake. You force your body to shift reverse constantly. It’s isn’t good for you. There’s no getting away from it. Being a pilot will not extend your life that’s a fact. You’re risking shortening it. The facts are there. But like anything in life there’s risk. How much risk? Ball of string as no one is really forcing the issue at the moment other than the unions. The regulators like to keep a lid on it as it would raise serious consequences for the industry.

Many of the reasons you mention is why I'm absolutely happy flying PC12s around Europe: - You never know where you will be going next - The fields you go to are usually very small to save on landings fees and time consuming security checks. - These small fields are usually quite challenging (short grass strips, or mountain strips like Courchevel) - The small fields without instrument approaches force you to check out the WX more precisely - You have direct contact with passengers (receiving pax at security, taking them to A/C, serving them) - You don't have jet lag - You don't sit in the cockpit for more than 2-3h per flight (more time on task flying departures and arrivals than sitting in the cockpit 12h on a transatlantic flights) - Depending on if it is private or commercial, your medical requirements aren't as high - You usually come home the same day - You're never on standby on the other side, I could probably never make a living off it like you do :)

I was already in the application process with the Lufthansa (and officially still am), but then came the virus, and I decided to get the PPL at least myself, which, in combination with university has kinda ejected the classic airline pilot from my list of potential future jobs. Especially when I got the comparison of flying into larger airports versus the small airfields, the smaller, the more interesting it gets to fly, and that has always appealed to me much more than the larger aerodromes. Combining that with the lifestyle and the fact that I wouldn't even have gotten into Lufthansa itself, but the low-cost carrier Eurowings only, probably struggling for ages to pay off that massive amount of money for the schools... all harsh, but the biggest issue for me would be that certain kind of repetitiveness, that I've even experienced in small SEPs, when it came to having to orient myself with highways for hours. Always been looking forward to getting to fly across nature, water, mountains again... so maybe classic airline just isn't for me, there's other fields too
