So I apologize for not being absolutely clear in this video. I do love my truck and everything about it. This video was to make those folks who are looking into owning one of these and maybe talk some sense into them and go buy one. But just not because it is easy to own one but because it is fun to own. Put your grownup pants on and buy one!!! Don’t be a sissy. 😅

Noooo. I drive and maintain one for our rural fire service as a water tender. It does well in this application, but is pretty out of date and uncomfortable. I suppose instead of talking shit I could makey own video on maintenance tricks, right! Sorry to be a dick, I'm a little jaded, and amused somebody would drive one for fun!

The local onion farm has a pair of red ones that they've been using my entire life to haul onion from the fields to the barn. Youre spot on about treating them well and them doing right by you. Every 5 years or so they'll get a new coat of paint and they just keep on keeping on

In 1999 my platoon had a deuce with a plate on the dashboard that said "overhauled to taccom standards 1974". As LT, I had to sign for that beast. Good thing I was 91B, so the maintenance crew was in my company, because it needed a full overhaul. BUT....when it was working....it really worked. We almost got it stuck once, all muddy in Washington state on field training....and that thing REALLY goes. We didn't have to do any recovery, it got itself out.

@hummerguy7 ай бұрын
What is your cruising speed in the 1083a1? Also, how has it been in terms of reliability? The issues I hear with them is what kept me away from getting an LMTV or FMTV
@mikepappas64157 ай бұрын
It rolls a comfortable 60mph. It has the lower gears in it. I have had very few issues with it. I switched from engine oil in the trans to ATF that made it shift really nice. I do pretty good maintenance on it maybe that helps. I searched for quite a while before buying it I passed on a lot of hammered trucks. I live in Utah and really got tired of crawling up all the hills in a Deuce with no power not to mention the noise got really old. The air brakes have been outstanding verses air over hydraulic.
@hummerguy7 ай бұрын
@@mikepappas6415 Interesting, when you mentioned lowered gears, you're talking about the OEM gearing or the highway gearing they made for these trucks? Also, is the MPG much worst than the M35s? I'm planning on possibly going with a 12 valve cummins in the M35 and maybe an Eaton TO-11605A, that's if I can find one. I'm planning on also doing the disk brake conversion as well, but I would like to have another big truck to use on the side before I take on this project since it may go on for a little while
@mikepappas64157 ай бұрын
Standard gear ratio. Not the highway gears. I am good with the gears it has. I think I am going to put a locking diff in the third axle and call it a day. I think it gets around 8mpg. An engine change would be awesome on your truck.
@hummerguy7 ай бұрын
@@mikepappas6415 That's pretty good, that truck would be a beast with a locker on one of the axles. Also, do you know what's your RPMs are at 60?

As crazy as it sounds, you can make it somewhat comfy, I put A/C, power steering, and a radio in mines. I will probably do some minor insulation inside to help reduce the sound just a little bit. Personally, my only issue is mostly just top speed, 47-48 is about the most for me at cruising speed, if I was able to cruise at 60, I'll be 100% more happy with the truck, I still have the 395 tires that I can install, but would hate to lose the acceleration and ability to climb the bridge out here in 5th gear

1992 I was working at a Mazda dealership in the St. Louis when this old man comes in with his new truck. He said he thinks the speedometer is off because he just drove from Memphis,TN to St. Louis and it only took 4 hours. He said that trip used to take him over 6 hours. I told him I had just made that trip twice in the past year and it took me about 4 hours each time. He laughed and said, " Of course, back then, I was driving a Duece and a Half sipping on a fifth of Jack." I still laugh about everytime I see one. Thanks for sharing yours with us.

Some of those things can be remedied: final drive ratios can be changed & the engine's HP can be upped to make it more roadworthy, and fuel economy and top speed will improve as a result. That said, it loses some of its off-roadability and tow-ability when you change the final drive ratios. So, proceed based on what you bought the truck for. The cabs can be sound-deadened to a point. There are hard tops available for the cabs, to help with creature comfort, and you can install a stereo and speakers - and once you install sound deadening, you'll be able to hear it! Parking & maneuvering only takes a little brain power: if you drive a semi for a living, its a piece if cake. If not, then look at where you want/need to take the truck, and figure out the best way in & out. Same applies if you're in a pickup pulling any kind of trailer - park so that you're out of everybody's way, but can get out with ease. Every Lowe's, Home Depot, and WalMart has entrances and exits for delivery trucks: learn where they are, and use them. Google Earth helps with this. Other than those - it's a big truck, and anything big truck related, is expensive (except maybe brake drums & shoes...comparitively speaking...).
@justamanandhisdeuceandahal53997 ай бұрын
Yes mostly all can be remedied. You just to be smart do your research like you should before buying anything. Make the truck to your specifications and enjoy. Just don’t be a sissy about it. lol. I love my truck and I knew what it was before I bought it. First thing I done to mine was added an EGT gauge and turned the fuel up a smidge and bypassed the FDC and woke the truck up a lil. Then added power steering. Added a few interior comforts and changed the headlights so my blind ass could see. But slowly I am building to my specifications
