This was such an enjoyable review to watch! I love this guys sense of humour. Also love seeing little glimpses of England and the cold weather (cold weather loving Australian here). Also so fascinating that the car is inspired by diamonds and the build quality is top notch because it insulates well.

I drove a rental hybrid C-HR 4000km around Spain and Portugal during October and November this year. The car had 10000km on the clock and was a delight to drive. A funky little car with good styling and plenty of power. I was getting 5.1l/100km fuel efficiency, which. compared to my 2014 Camry 2.4l petrol with 11l/100km is quite amazing, albeit mostly highway. The seats are worth a special mention - I could easily drive 3 or 4 hours without any discomfort in my backside compared to the Camry, which has terrible seats only good for maybe 2 hours. The worst and most dangerous feature, however, was the adaptive cruise control! Together with Lane assist, it pretty much takes the pain out of highway driving, so much so that there is a sensor to warn that your hands are no longer on the wheel, and disengages if continued for too long. What's really dangerous for someone like me, who has got used to the "manual" cruise control that needs to be engaged and disengaged by the driver, is that the system on the C-HR overrides the accelerator pedal. If overtaking a truck and we are both in the same inside lane, the system sees the truck ahead and slows the car down by itself progressively as you get closer. Now move into the adjacent lane to overtake, and it once again speeds up to whatever speed was set. Moving into the other lane well ahead of the truck seems to be the way to go, but you then run the risk of pissing off other drivers coming up way faster behind you. Of course, the system isn't infallible, and sometimes the camera controlling it slams on the brakes without warning at 120KPH while overtaking. the real danger for someone like me who is not familiar with the car (no manual of course) is that I'm no longer in charge. If I overtake a truck and the sensor camera overreacts, the accelerator (gas) pedal was shut down and actually collapsed on the floor, until it reset itself. This happened several times and I lost faith in the car. A shame because otherwise a great little car as said previously, except that its attempt at safety features backfired. I could not find a way to turn the feature off.

Just rented one for a month in Germany. Good point is the esthetic, and the totally seamless transition between electric (not a lot of it) and gasoline engine. The economy is quite good, about 50 euros for 600 km (in Germany). But… From the driver standpoint, the CVT is a huge pain, it’s totally basic and if there’s any up and down in the road the RPM go up in an extremely annoying way. It feels like you are driving an old Fiat 500, if you know what I mean, even though there’s actually some power (Btw, I’m pretty familiar with CVT, within my vehicles there’s a Subaru Forester, and that CVT is a much better thing, night-and-day better). The gear selector seems standard, but it isn’t, you need to do a kind of a left-and-right dance to go from P to D and R. In a month I never got it completely right, I had to always hunt around to make it work. And the *beep* at every speed signal !!!! Triple *beep* if you dare to go over the limit by one kilometer… Huge, huge, huge annoyance that after the initial amazement gets old very soon if you are driving countryside… I had rear passengers for a week, and they all lamented a very high noise and most importantly a very bad outside visibility. The cute exterior lines evidently didn’t consider the consequences… So, all in all I was happy to have this car, worked reasonably well for the month I needed it. But I would NEVER buy one, no matter what…

I have the 1.8L self-charging design spec of this car, and overall, it's been a very positive experience. It's incredibly comfortable to drive, and 500 miles in, I've averaged 60 mpg (UK). However, there are a few quirks that I've noticed along the way. For starters, syncing trip data to the app requires you have to be stationary in park and click the privacy screen three times, otherwise, the trip data gets lost! The motor that drives the wipers are super noisy (as is the boot opening and closing), and the rear screen tends to fog up easily, which can be frustrating, especially considering there's no rear wiper. We've had so much rain in the UK lately, yes it does need a rear wiper! Visibility out of the rear is rather limited, and the reversing camera's in the design spec has poor resolution nothing better than my previous Juke. Another annoyance is the constant beeping - whether it's for going just a mile over the speed limit or changing speed zones, the alerts can get a bit excessive. The major crash alert has come on a couple of times, when there's no way I was going to crash - just driving normally during busy school runs. There's quite a few other minor annoyances. Sometimes randomly the alarm sounds for 5 seconds when locking the car. Every other drive it sends the app an alert to check the rear seats and if you turn off the alerts for those darn bleeps, it's reset the next time you start the car. When reversing, the screen does not always show the radar when approaching objects you could hit. When a couple of passengers are in the rear, the 1.8L engine feels like it struggles and boy does it growl, like driving a Ferrari growl. Other than that the 1.8 engine is fine esp in busy town driving.
@philipbassett51297 ай бұрын
Those constant audible alerts, especially the one that bleeps when you are 1mph over the speed limit, which is probably, bearing in mind speedos over read by a couple of mph, on average, is actually still under the speed limit, is enough to put me off buying one. It would drive me absolutely loopy. In fact, since all cars have them now, I probably won’t be buying a new car for many years hence, I’ll just wait until my current car gets ropy and then buy one of the last model year cars that DOESN’T have it fitted.

Currently driving one brand new hire car . One the gearbox will keep reverting to eco mode , on shut down and have to select normal each time I start it, Apparently there's a mode select button for cruise control and speed limiter , where is It? .One mile an hour over the speed limit and there's a quiet chime starts . How do you turn that off ? The steering wheel is not leather. Feels very plastic. Steering far to light, and the drivers seat will not go down far enough. Feels like you are sat on it not in it . By the way I am only 5.10

Agreed on the claustrophobia aspect of the rear seats. I think they could mitigate the effect by using lighter upholstery. It’s so dark in the back. Love the divided cockpit design upfront though. No complaints upfront. The C-HR is top of my list with one caveat, the boot space may be a problem for certain scenarios. Airport and/or tip runs.

Who likes using the bus? 🤔😬 _However._ And this isn't just about this car or Toyota, but applies to all car makers. *When is someone going to make a "tracked (Not a wheeled/tired!) hatchback" to cope with all the £¬(%ing huge potholes we have to endure on the terrible British roads today?*

I will EASILY give you 10 reasons NOT to buy one: 1. the car sounds like a tin can when closing a door. I f you fancy tin cans this is the car for you. 2. passenger side dash is so badly designed that makes entering cumbersome without any real benefit. 3. the glove box simply can not be opened (there is no room !) when there is a passenger sitting in front. 4. The forward extension of the front door internal facia may look nice to the eye but is so flimsy that you should better not touch it at all. 5. Toyota has made so many 'cutbacks' to save money that make no sense because they do not save more that 100 bucks (no pockets behind front seats, no arrangements in the boot, etc) 6. overall quality of materials is FAR behind the competition, no matter what the 'reviewers' say. 7. graphics on the driver screen are sooo outdated that start giving on your nerves after a while... 8. no central armrest on the back seats, not even as an option... really??? on a 40k car? 9. soundproofing is simply non existent 10. the fact that handling has improved from previous CHR does NOT mean that it is good - comparison statements is a gimmick interviewers use to avoid the actual truth, be very cautious when you hear them... . The ONLY advantages of this car are its external design (many cudos on that) plus the efficiency and reliability (you do PAY for that multi year warranty, most of it is actually insurance you know...) of the powertrains (although they are not the best when it comes to smoothness or response...). ALL else (including price...) are simply BAD.
@chasf34332 ай бұрын
Totally agree with most if the above. Much more cheaply made than the original CHR, poor passenger and luggage space, horrible dark all black plastic interior, my 2016 Yaris is nicer. Triumph of style over function. Lots of Preregistered or low mileage short lease ones at dealers at big discounts off new - no surprise! Really wanted to like the new CHR but just too flawed.

It doesn’t have a CVT Transmission. It’s described as an e-CVT only because is mimics a CVT gearbox. There’s actually NO gearbox. No, I’m not joking. It has a planetary gear set mated to a power split device. Ergo, the transmission is completely step less and ultra reliable. Zero issues expected. There’s no mechanical reverse gear cogs - reverse is accomplished via the joystick gear lever - and the electric traction motors reverse polarity and push the car backwards. Does this voodoo magic / alien technology (reverse engineered at Area 51) scare you? It shouldn’t. It’s ultra reliable. The same tech has been in use in my 2008 2nd Gen Prius Tspirit. It still runs flawlessly after 15+ years using the ORIGINAL drivetrain. Now at 154k miles. It’s a Toyota - not a Ford Eco boost. You have nothing to fear.
