A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician reviews the Toyota CHR which is often referred to as a bad car or not a recommended car. But is it really that bad?
So Should you buy a Toyota C-HR? In this video we will take a look at the CHR from a different set of eyes.
The Toyota CHR is a strange subcompact crossover. It is a daring design from a company that typically keeps things conservative with design. And it starts to make more sense knowing that it was intended to be badged as a Scion model.
It is the second car that I can think of after the FJ cruiser that in some areas compromises functionality for the sake of design.
The Toyota CHR strangeness can make folks think it's not a good car, However once you look past it, it is actually one of the most reliable Toyota models when compared to other Toyota models.

When I was looking to get one all the bad reviews were really off putting. Purchased one against all advice. I can't explain how much I love this car. It is a joy to drive. No issues merging, handles great, honestly its so easy to drive I find myself speeding often just because this car makes driving mindless. Its good enough to fit a 55" tv or groceries but not much more than that. However as a daily driver, its a joy.

I rented a CH-R and expected subcompact economy car levels of ride, noise & seat comfort. Boy was I wrong! The CH-R rode nearly as smoothly and quietly as my 2018 Camry LE and it's seats were far more comfortable. It's seats have a magical "zero gravity" feeling about them - no fatiguing pressure points on longer drives! Around town the CH-R was wonderfully nimble. Ironically, I found the larger and more expensive Rav4 to be more primitive and trucklike compared to the CH-R - it rode more harshly and loudly, had mediocre seats, didn't maintain highway directional stability as well and, of course, was less nimble to drive around town.

I think the CH-R has a very unique look of its own. I have driven Toyota’s and Scion’s for a long time. Actually, I was just crazy about my little red hatchback Scion. I bought my C-HR one week before my 25th birthday, and I LOVE IT! I bought it because I needed some thing with great gas mileage and a little bit of a trunk space so that I can put my equipment in (I’m a traveling musician). The only real problem I have with it is the Blindspot. But I honestly love how unique it looks, I love how it just stands out and everybody complements the car. I’ve even had a good friend of mine who is a producer (and a big guy) get into the passenger seat and say that he loved the car and it was super comfortable. But I do agree that on long drives it can get really uncomfortable. I live in Miami, once I drove up to Orlando with it and by the time I got to the hotel my back was killing me. But I mostly use it to just drive around the city and it’s very fine. But I do have to say that I will trade it in for either a RAV4 or a Corolla cross because I am finding that I do need more space. Still I love my car

Regardless of the car, snow and ice are handled mostly by tire design (though AWD can certainly be helpful). There is nothing "special" about the CH-R's handling of snow and ice, unless you installed snow tires. Small new cars are typically "economical and reliable." That you can fit your choice of gear inside doesn't make the cargo area "spacious." It's definitely good, of course, that the car suits *your* needs - though you'd probably find that a Corolla Cross does everything better.

Just recently discovered this little Bug. My wife and I got very interested so we test drove one. AMD hit the nail on the head with its characteristics. I really like the design and layout. It's a breath of fresh air where we seem to see all these cool concept cars but they never come to fruition. Toyota has dumped the car for 2022. It is not available in the New model year so whatever is allocated, that's all that's out there. That made me look further into why. Doing some C-HR Owner Forums research, there were a whole lot of transmission failures, most just a short distance out of warranty, like 65-80k. They were noise complaints initially, not dead on the road issues. The striking part was that the transmission is not really rebuildable so your looking at replacement. Those that had gone through that and voiced their situations explained that transmission replacement was consistently $8000-$9000 DOLLARS! That is absolutely insane! Most of those I noticed were of 2018-19 model years. It's a car for a college kid getting their first new car. It's cool but way to noisy and pokey for this soon to be 60 y/o looking fora decent commuter for my wife. We're going for the Rav4 XSE AWD.

Most of the English speaking websites are heavily US-biased. Like AMD said, in the US there is only one engine available. In Sweden where I am only hybrid models are sold - 1.8 or 2.0 liters. And these have a completely different transmission system, none of those complaints apply to these models. So a lot of the non-US folks might get the wrong info reading these complaints. Just wanted to point that out for anyone non-US who is reading.

First time I saw this in display around April of 2021, fell in love with it, It's car that I've never seen before. Always amazed with hatchback tyoe of vehicles. Was initially looking for a wagon type car but unfortunately they are nowhere to be found as the market already shifted to SUV and crossover. My first choice is a mid sized sedan like the Accord, Camry, or the Mazda but due to some financial constraints, we have to reconsider. I test drove other crossovers and didn't like them. Was merely looking for comfort ride and not so with performance. This crossover drives and behaves like a car. Suspension is very comfortable and soft. Well, after all deliberations, we decided to get it. Here they only offer the 1.8 Hybrid. If there are other engine option, I would have gotten the 2.0 liter. Drives like a dream. I average 26kms/liter as I only drive in and around stop and go traffic.

Bought one 6 weeks ago. 2019 mod, 1.8 hybrid (Norway) I'm simply in love. Its not the fastest kid in town. I really don't care. This one with a powerful engine would make it dangerous and probably very expensive for me as the highest speed limit in Norway is low compared to other countries (110 km/h) and my thoughts just drifts off when driving. Several times I've forgotten to take of to my actual destination. And it kind of makes me happy. That means I have to turn and spend a bit more time with my new big love. The lack off vision from inside to your blind spot its just an expectations issue and not a problem. The blind spot warnings in the side mirrors and other sensors just take some time to get used to and trust. VERY fuel efficient when you drive a hybrid as a hybrid should be driven. It' uses less fuel then my previous 1.2 Nissan Micra. I've might not bought this with small children. I'm just sooooo happy my son is a grown up with his own car...I cant see my selves drive anything else for a very long time.

Another great review AMD. This one I was waiting for since I own a 2021 CHR. Bought it brand new in January. It is now exactly one year old and I can tell you that it’s been super reliable with zero issues. I have almost 37k miles on it. I use it as my commuter car and to run around town. I bought the car because it look different from all the other Toyotas compact cars and SUV’s. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure how reliable it was going to be compared to the other Toyotas I’ve owned. I only drive Toyotas or Lexus. Learned my lessons with other brand at a ver young age. Lol the only thing, for me that I wish it would get is, just a bit better gas mileage. I know, I could have went with a Prius, but gas wasn’t that bad last year. So, now that you have let us all know how supper reliable this little gem is, I plant to put some more serious miles on it. Thanks buddy! 👍🏽😊

Great review and great info on this car. I am still LOVING my 2019 C-HR XLE! Toyotas in the past did not really appeal to me but when this car came out it grabbed my attention. This is our daily and our family car. I have a wife and a teenager and the car actually fits in my garage which is a plus. It handles very, very well and what many people don't know is that it was fine-tuned on the Nürburgring in Germany because the chief engineer is a race car driver. Because of this is has some great performance parts straight from the dealer. From my Toyota dealer I added the TRD Air Intake Kit for more horsepower and torque and the TRD Lowering Springs to lower the ride height and increase the performance and it does all this without compromising ride comfort. These parts really help the car reach its full potential. The spoilers actually are functional because the car is very stable at triple digit speeds. This an incredibly sporty compact SUV that is stylish, reliable and because of its dimensions and linear performance it is actually really enjoyable to drive in town, on the highway and through the twisties. My C-HR is definitely a keeper. Doesn't hurt that it really holds onto its value. Where I live, we have great weather all year long, so I don't need AWD and we have some great driving roads. The CH-R may not be for everyone, but it was perfect for me and my family. Drive one for yourself and see it in person and if you do get one, I highly recommend the TRD Performance parts. Because they are from Toyota, they do not void the warranty and really make a great difference in how the car performs.

We got our C-HR Koba 1.8L Hybrid in late Dec 2021, after 6 months of waiting for it in Australia. The hybrid lacks oomph when you need the power but it’s really fuel efficient for driving around urban areas, we average around 4.5 L /100km (two persons) and about 3.6 L/100km (1 person). Most of our passengers comment about the back seats being more claustrophobic due to the window design at the back, but we haven’t got kids yet and we just love the style and the metallic white paint we’ve got. :) For a few thousand dollars more, we could have gone for the Rav4 for a bigger hybrid car but honestly we don’t need that for a two-person car. Love it despite what the naysayers say. ;)

Ok, it is not speedy car, but acceleration in intersections (junctions) are really good and overtaking acceleration is also really good. Don't know what else you need. Drove long distance (approx. 5000km), rested only during night, drove all day and did only bathroom breaks, didn't felt tired at all. Lastly, if those who think the cross will discontinue the CHR, doesn't look so, as it will be the one of the first under the Z group of electric cars (not current China chr). looking back at Mr. Toyoda 's recent launch of hopeful New Electric. At least two are very close to current chr at least from side profile.. Chr will be quite up to date for years as edgy designs are coming. We already seeing cuts and creases with competing Hyundai.

I work for a security company, and we've used Nissans, Fords and Toyotas for our patrol cars. These cars idle for up to 14 hours a day, with only a few miles a day in actual driving. Because my boss only changes the oil every 5000 miles, the Fords and Nissans only lasted a few years before the engine oil turned to mud and killed them. Anyway, we've all got new C-HRs now, and my impressions are: Zero to 60 in about fifteen minutes----ABSOLUTELY NO POWER; no heated seats, which sucks; it handles OK; the speakers are not too good; and yeah, it looks weird. Hard to believe a car made in Turkey is reliable, but I am keeping my fingers crossed we get oil changes this time! My personal RAV4 is a much better car.

Well the “boss” is apparently not a fleet service expert. When I worked at a coal handling facility we ran around the clock, the foreman’s truck ran 24/7, it was shut off twice a day at the beginning of each shift to check the oil. We brought it in once a month to change the oil and yearly for the transmission fluid.

This is going to be a long comment. Up front, I own a 2019 C-HR LE. This car has been what I describe as half done car. I went through the comments and one poster is correct with the suspension tuning of this car. It was dialed in at the Nurburgring. The dampers used in this car are sourced from Sachs. This car has a fully independent rear suspension which aids in how well the car handles but at the cost of a higher trunk floor. This means less cargo space. From looking at the specs of the Corolla Cross, it does not have a fully independent rear suspension but a beam axle setup. What really kills this car is the engine/trans package. The proper engine which should have been put into this car would have been the engine used in the current Corolla hatchback. It would take Toyota zero effort to do this as the Corolla hatchback and C-HR share the TNGA chassis platform. The Lexus UX is evidence of this as the UX is just an upscaled version of the C-HR. I've learned to deal with the lack luster performance of this car. Those that are saying performance can be increased by throwing an intake on this car are just kidding themselves. An intake isn't going to add enough horsepower to overcome the lackluster performance. In its class, the C-HR is the slowest at 10 seconds from 0 to 60. The HRV will do that sprint in the 8 second range. There really isn't an excuse for Toyota to screw the North American market the way it has with this powertrain combo. Other things which makes no sense from Toyota with this car is the disparity in options. The infotainment debacle is one that is inexcusable. 2019 saw the intro of Car Play with the Entune 3.0 system. I'm an Android user so Car Play support is useless to me. The dealer I bought this car from along with other dealers based on Internet forum response kept saying an upgrade would be forthcoming. It never materialized. Yet in Australia, a firmware update was made available giving them Android Auto functionality. Entune 3.0 and Scout GPS are just plain horrible. Toyota should be ashamed of themselves. Also, the trip computer is the worst I've ever seen in having a totally useless range estimate gauge. It's not even remotely close to correct in estimating range to empty. Continuing with this, one USB port for a car that is supposed to appeal to the younger buyer, really? And only one 12V accessory power outlet, really? The overseas market gets park distance sensors which we in North America don't. Overseas markets don't get a full spare tire but a road hazard kit to deal with flats. I personally would love to go with this option as it lowers the trunk floor to allow for more trunk capacity. I just don't get Toyota's haphazard logic. 2018 models had the backup camera display integrated into the inside rear view mirror due to the head unit used. 2019 models got an auto dimming inside rear view mirror but was taken away in subsequent model years. It's a shame as I was able to retrofit a Gentex auto dimming mirror with Homelink in my car. Safety features....the projector beam headlights with the halogen bulbs are a total travesty. To be able to adequately see, you have to use the high beams and even then it was marginal. The first mod I did to this car was to put on a set of HID lights within the first week of ownership. I don't know how the newer models with the LED headlights are. Hopefully a lot better. This car should have the blind spot monitoring feature as standard and not only made available in the XLE and Limited trims. Other annoyances with the C-HR is the limited door swing of the rear passenger doors. It makes it challenging to get kids in and out of the car when a car seat is being used. I wanted to get the Corolla Hatchback but the horrible trunk space of the Corolla HB was a non starter for me. The published trunk capacity Toyota puts out for the Corolla HB is pure fantasy. You can see how much smaller the trunk is compared to the C-HR if you put them side by side. Had the Corolla Cross been available when I bought my C-HR, I would own the Cross hands down with the larger trunk space and the better powertrain package. As to those that are experiencing transmission failures, I've been seeing quite a bit of the 2018 models having this from the online forums. I've been unable to get anyone that reported a trans failure to provide the root cause. I'm only speculating. But I'm wondering if the vast majority of these trans failures are occurring when mileages exceed 60k with no fluid service. Yes, Toyota states the trans is sealed and there is no service interval as there is "lifetime" fluid in it. But those with any mechanical knowledge knows there is no such thing as lifetime fluid. Calling my dealer about trans service always yields a response that there are no fluid services needed to it's only needed at 100k miles. I just did a trans flush at an independent repair shop at 60k miles. We'll see if my trans will hold up. Those that have CVTs need to be on top of regular fluid service with these things regardless of manufacturer. If there is one shiny side to having this archaic engine is that it is simple to work on and should be reliable from that stand point. No carbon fouling issues on the intake valves and runners due to the old port fuel injection system. And no timing belt so no need for an expensive timing belt service. Oh and some of the standard features are pretty nice for this car with dual zone climate control and the standard safety features (ie active cruise control). As to all the clamoring for AWD, for most drivers, it's not needed. I've lived through a few Mid Atlantic winters so far and never ever felt I needed AWD. It's a crutch for those that have not focused on learning how to drive in these weather conditions. I've installed a set of Michelin Cross Climate 2 winter rated all season tires recently. I'll see how well they perform over the stock all seasons. So far I've been very impressed. Very few people spend the money on where it counts the most with winter driving performance which is proper tires. My garage queen is a BMW 135i that was my daily driver until I got the C-HR. I fitted a set of Bridgestone WS80 winter tires on it and have never gotten stuck. This was a long comment but there was so much I wanted to cover with this car. It could have been a great car for the North American market but Toyota couldn't get out of its own way just like the C-HR they chose to sell in North America.

Found a used 2018 model with less than 30,000 miles on it back in 2021 -- single owner, must've been too small for them. Got this as an absolute steal from a dealership one of my good friends worked at so didn't have to worry about any funny business (price in the window is what you paid at this place). I've driven this car from Detroit, MI to Casper, WY and back as a solo and I absolutely love it. Cheap, insanely efficient, runs like a champ. I'm not a car guy by any stretch, but I fell in love with this model the moment I saw it (sad to see it discontinued). It's not a street racer by any stretch (I consider this a pro, not a con) and I've never had the problem of confusing my car with someone else's in a crowded parking lot.

We never sold many of these C-HR models. Not having AWD was a real dealbreaker for a lot of people. Many of them who wanted an AWD jellybean sized crossover walked over to the Ford side of the dealership and got the Ecosport instead. Much like the Ecosport, the C-HR had a very niche customer base and those were elderly people and young women. The only I liked about the C-HR was the canted dashboard. It reminded me of the late 60s early 70s full-size Ford that had the same dash treatment. I thought it was a lot more driver friendly to have everything in easy reach. It's a nice, unique looking little crossover for the price.

Hello AMD. I'm from Greece and i really appreciate the time you spend to create these videos to show and explain us so many things with the simplicity you do in order we understand in a better way our cars. So,i own a 2020 CHR 1.8 Hybrid. The engine is the 2ZR-FXE.The manual of the car recommends to use oil 0W-16 and if you use 0W-20 you should use 0W-16 again at the next oil change. However, due to our climate in my country especially in summer, many dealerships use 5W30 and they insist that this is the recommended oil because of our hot weather. As you obviously know everybody has it's opinion but i would like your opinion. Will the 5W-30 harm the engine in the long term?Should we always use 0W-16?Should we use 0W-16 in winter and 5W-30 in summer?Should we follow exactly what the manual says? What would you suggest?Thank you for your time and keep on with the good job you're doing..

When I went to get a new car (really a used car, I never buy new) I was looking either between a 2018 Toyota CH-R or a 2017 Toyota Corolla SE. the dealers here in Ohio were charging a ton of money for the CHR. I could get the Corolla for 5k cheaper and it still had adaptive cruise, lane departure and all the driver goodies I wanted. The back seat in my Corolla is HUGH compared to the CHR. I've had my 2019 CHR Limited for 9 months and I love my CHR. I only wish mine had Android Auto, Toyota only had Android Auto in the 20 & 21 models.

We have had one for 4 years, brilliant. Some oddities though: No grab handles or coat hooks in the back. No ignition/key light so in the dark you buggerise around to fit the key. The door and centre console arm rests are quite hard, so when on a long drive they become pain points. The glovebox button requires deep thought to operate.

I’ve owned a number of vehicles. We have received more compliments on the CHR (iceberg green) than anything in the past. Look around. Dull grey and boring white clones everywhere you look. Unique and different. We like our CHR.

"Funky, cute, different", AMD, you have a saying for every situation. I rented one in England so the first time I drove one also had right-had steering. Thankfully I had an automatic so I didn't have to shift with my left hand while negotiating driving on the wrong side of the road.

I have a 2018 XLE Premium and don't understand the negative reviews.... My primary complaint is the poor side rear visability. The acceleration is adequate for my needs and the ride is very smooth. I don't need AWD...so, no complaints there. Trunk could be a little larger. I absolutely love the sound system......my music sounds good. Anyway...my 2 cents. Definitely not a car for everyone, but the negativity is not necessary....

I don't think it's a bad car. In general Toyota doesn't make bad cars... the only thing is that Toyota made that car in mind the European market which is quite different from the American market. didn't have idea they were sold outside of EU and Japan.

My son currently has a Hyunday Veloster and he he tells me his next vehicle will be a CHR. You are correct AMD, they will appeal well to the younger crowd. Glad to hear they are great cars overall!

This is so funny. I also currently have a veloster and this is also my next car!!! I think I love it because it reminds me of the veloster but Little bigger!

From the UK : I have the 2 litre hybrid Orange edition, after 20 yrs of being a Landcruiser owner, it was the styling that brought it to my attention; one problem is that the 12 volt battery is low Amp and can easy run down if car not driven regularly, other than that love it. One strange thing is that the button for the heated seats is on the dash yet button for the heated steering wheel is out of site low down on the other side of the steering wheel, although there is space for the button next to the heated seat button, it’s as if it’s an afterthought.
