#1 reason not to play Rust: Rampant cheating. It is a huge and massive problem. Many of the "guess they are good" players are using good old skill.exe.

At 52, I suck at PVP but that hasn't stopped me from sinking over 900 hours in the game, so far. The in-game weather system is absolutely ace and it even includes seasons. The sound design is also very good and everything has its own recognisable sound. You can hear by the sound of their steps what kind of shoes people are wearing. And when there are thunderstorms, it can get really loud with loads of bone-chilling booms. It's a tough game, perhaps, but as you said, it is very rewarding if you're willing to put in the hours. 10/10 can recommend!

how does it compare to the "sons of the forest" and "grounded" game on Steam/PC? i haven't played either but I'm carefully looking for an open world survival craft to play with my son. We have really enjoyed Valheim and Ark in this genre so far. Thanks

With your son?! Oh no! Don't do it. This is primarily PvP game, while the games you listed are primarily Coop experiences.

You could even play Rust with your son as a coop experience, as long as you find a decent (not too heavily modded) PvE only (!) server. Otherwise Rust is too brutal and toxic xD According to the games you already played, maybe check out Raft, Smallands, Grounded, Enshrouded, Icarus or even Palworld, they might suit you two!
