The Munificent class seems like the perfect ship to use instead of the Imperial class star destroyer. It's big enough and packs enough firepower like a ship of the line but is small and fast enough to be cost effective to be used in large numbers against enemies.

I kinda paper sketch designed a 700 m multi role Jack of all trades perfect cruiser as a mainline ship for my fictional largest Imperial Remnant belonging to Thrawn faction , based on a Arquitens with an extra wedge added , has weapons from all the famous small ships of the Empire below Star destroyers and has a Carrier focus too .... now that I see it , it's very very similar to the Munificient in a Thrawn imperial way

​@@toby1061 It's actually ironic for Count Dooku... had he just turned on Darth Sidious from the outset, at Geonosis it could have ended quite differently for him. The Republic would have lost that first battle had Dooku not sabotaged the Separatists' efforts, and forced an unnecessary retreat rather than 'sending all available troops in to battle'. From there the CIS could started work on the Death Star, and sent their fleets to capture Kamino, bombard shipyards, and blockade Coruscant at a point the Republic has no navy to speak of. With warships at their doors, the Senate almost certainly would have pushed for peace. The Jedi could not have justified a war against a foe that is demanding a peace settlement. And Darth Sidious would have been left in an interesting position... possibly with no alternative but to come after Dooku and try and reclaim the CIS. Cos Dooku should have known Sidious would betray him eventually. He was too old to be his apprentice long term. If he'd been less naïve, he could have had everything, trained his own dark side apprentices, perhaps established his own new Sith Order.

So glad this was made! I always thought that these ships were an underappreciated aspect of the Confederacy's arsenal, overshadowed by super-weapons like the Malevolence, super tank, and the original Death Star. These ships were always shown holding their own against larger "proper" ships of the line like Venators and their firepower really stood out to me since they're officially classed as frigates. One thing I really wish we could see is various members of the Imperial Remnants using these to shore up their fleets. Sure every Imperial Moff and warlord wants a Super Star Destroyer, but what good is it if you can't find the massive amount of crew and resources to maintain and operate it, or if you can't even communicate with your forces spread out across sectors. Having a handful of Munificents would allow you to maintain secure communications, transport vital resources securely, invest less manpower in a single vessel, and overall be more tactically flexible in engagements.

I always thought it was terrible based on how it was portrayed in the Clone Wars TV show; a frigate with low structural integrity that was always the first point of failure in a separatist battle group. But after playing Empire at War, I realized that it was an extremely well armed ship for its size and cost, and could be highly effective in mass numbers, with a concentrated stream of turbo laser fire which could take out even the heaviest capital ships with ease. This combination of low cost and impressive firepower more than make up for its poor defense.

From what I’ve read, the munificent class star frigates had a single heavy turbo turbo laser battery in a coaxial mount of the front of the ship as well as two heavy ion cannons. Most of its 46 Light Turbo Lasers were mounted on the underside of the frigate, 26 mounted in coaxial battery’s and 20 in singular battery’s.

The Munificent calls itself a frigate, but in function it's actually deployed as a Multi-role medium to heavy cruiser in fleet formations, making up the backbone of the Confederacy's navy. A flexible workhorse that could move material, personnel, and project power patrolling space. Exactly how the Banking Clan designed and used it for since they didn't need any battleships or any similarly larger dedicated combat craft before the clone wars.

If they ever adapt the original Thrawn Trilogy, in part or full, they should make the Katana Fleet 200 Munificent class star frigates. It just makes sense. The fleet was designed to be the CIS Sunday punch, jumped into hyper to deal a crushing blow to the Republic, and got the shutdown order mid transit dropping them out of hyper in deep space. They are the perfect class for old but still powerful vessels that could beef up Thrawn's navy.

Besides the Recusant the Munificent was my favorite ship of this era. I think you understate just how much of a crew advantage the CIS navy had over the Republic. Not only did this ship only require 200 crew, all but a HANDFUL would actually be living creatures with the rest being cheap and expendable droids that were EASILY replaced. On top of this many of the ships didn't even have living crew but those General droids. Despite the classification though (which we are told in the lore that it was a LIE to get around regulations and laws) this was NOT actually a frigate but would have actually be classified as a cruiser or heavy cruiser.

@@commanderknight9314 There is merit to both positions. Alot of the IJN naval ships, particularly carriers, were at the front of technological design in many ways at the start of WW 2 in 1939. However, alot of their designs, particularly battleships, were based on British designs that in some cases were still using WW 1 ideas, such as the emphasis on battlecruiser characteristics that could not stand up to battleships, I.e. the IJN Kirishima.

Keith Marshall The advantage of Vulture droids are fully their automation. Smallest starfighters possible, capable of the most extreme maneuvers possible. This is what makes them so deadly in combat. An arc is good and all but needs coordination, and the pilots are still human. The Vulture is not the pilot of the fighter, he IS the fighter, which also makes him deadlier. Even so they probably became outdated after the clone wars due to fighters reaching it’s quality

A Munificent had more guns then a Venator, but had less fighters then one. The CIS navy mass produced it's ships. A munificent had deadly heavy turbolasers at the front of the ship, which could really damage a ship. If the Venator were to send it's fighters at the Munificent, the Munificent had about 38 point defense guns, 12 flak guns, and 40 fighters to deal with them, along with Dwarf Spider Droids they could possibly use as extra guns, but this still wouldn't be enough for like, 192 V-Wings. My point is, a Venator is a capital ship, but still doesn't have a lot of weapons (8 heavy turbolaser turrets and 2 medium turbolaser turrets). The Munificent is not a full on capital ship, but has the weapons to seem like one. The Venator was a carrier, like a Lucrehulk, which is why it was a capital ship. The Munificent has lot's of weapons, but not many fighters.

I think they did a video one time about a lucrehulk carrier being used in a failed attack on the first death star, but from what I can recall for everything I've seen or read is that most of the droid ships were scrapped or put in junkyard, while some were secured by rebels or pirates, with a few ending up with the Rebel Alliance. The Empire was rather aggressive about hunting down any large groups of droid ships or units reactivated though. Hope it helps.

It's really surprising that a _800 metre long Frigate_ is more powerful and completely outclasses a _200 metre long Frigate._ It's almost like they are two totally different ship classes that for some stupid reason have been given the same designation. Munificent originally was merchant escort ship with firepower comparable to standard Frigate. During the war they were reequipped becoming basically proper cruisers, tough in my opinion they still were vastly underpowered comparing to similar proper warship like Victory Star Destroyer. Thrawn was an expert at blockades and counter assaults whereas grievous (Correct me if I am wrong) Was more of a frontal assault expert. Both of these guys in the same Faction would be terrifying.

Comparing the Munificent to other frigates makes it clear the "Star Frigate" is no more a frigate than the "Star Destroyer" is a destroyer. Much larger and doesn't play the role of a frigate, rather that of a battleship or other ship of the line. Still, a good design. Personally prefer the Venator but this is probably my second favourite clone wars era ship. Also, this is the second time I tried to post this comment. KZbin ate the first.

probably because in order to keep it fair they had to inflate the cost, the munificent actually costs 1/5 of the cost of a venator, meaning that actually allowing you to build it at the real cost would break the game

I think original variant was basically lightly armed merchant escort. But after war started they were reequipped in way heavier weapons. So yes, functionally they were cruisers.

A lot of times they just call it whatever they think sounds cool without giving much thought to the actual role the vehicle plays. The EU, both Legends and I think Disney canon brought in the Anaxis war college to try to standardize the actual classification, but that's only based on length which is a slightly less stupid way to categorize ship, but still stupid and lazy overall. But ya, in the roles it's used it's probably a cruiser, or an oversized destroyer given that it seems to often be used to screen the heavier ships when they're available.

So, basically, it's a ship of the line run by droids. (During the Napoleonic era, battleships were effectively just retrofited merchant vessels. You see, to withstand the harsh storms common in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, merchants kept or reinforcing their vessels with more and thicker oaken planks and beams. By the Time people started using Cannon's on ship's , the vessels were so sturdy all you really had to do was cut out some holes to point the guns out of, and you've got a fully functional warship)

Its called a frigate but how can the munificent be in the same category as a ship that is almost 4 times smaller than it? If it is a frigate then I feel like the ships it was compared with are more like screening, picket or scouting ships. Though its much newer, something in a similar size to compare with would have been a victory which i would also class as a frigate.

The skeletal structure was horrendous. It came at the cost of armour. I know they could easily field hundreds of these things and the droids were the main crew. But these things got torn apart by light turbolaser fire. And their shields cost a lot of power to use consistently. These were annihilated by basically anything else.
