Doesn't save the environment. But is that not the purpose? It's also very slow and the 4 clyinder engine will not keep up with a 20 hour drive. But hey! It's a hybrid why use gas? Because no maybe there's no where to fucking charge it when you're going on a road trip. The battery that 'Saves the environment' only pollutes it even more with toxic fumes and chemicals. Go spend your 20,000+ pounds into a beamer you're better off there.

+SilverFalcon 213 You don't need to charge the Prius. It charges with the regenerative brakes and it can use the engine as a generator. So yes, it will survive 20 hours of driving. Also, the battery is 95% recyclable and the factory that makes the battery packs are extremely environmentally friendly. Yes, battery packs use resources to make but hey, everything does.

I've had my 2nd Gen Prius for 4 years and saved at least £4,500 in fuel bills in the U.K. in that period of time - yes, fuel is very expensive in England, so I've been laughing all the way to the bank. This is my daily commuter too, so it's been worth owning one of these. Add low operating costs and the vehicle being so heavily over engineered that nothing goes wrong, and it makes way more sense than a BMW which would cost a bomb and a half in maintenance bills, fuel bills, eye gouging insurance premiums.......the old Prius II series is a gem. I'm sticking with it, thank you!

I've always wondered why every car guy ever feels like it's their obligation to hate the Prius. Why? Sure, it's not "manly" in the slightest and hippies drive them, but the technology used in them and their battery arrays is cutting edge and IMO pretty damn interesting.

+WinXPwhiz The fact is that to make a Prius is much more ecologically deteriorating than to make a Golf (for instance) for about the same fuel economy and running costs, the Prius is also more subjective to failure due to it being more complicated and fixing it will be miles more damaging to your wallet. Its as stupid looking as a missan micra and it also attracts the same kind of stupid, ignorant/oblivious (of their surroundings and traffic) and self centered people on the roads usually found in Micra's, Honda Jazz, BMW and Merc. also once the batteries will not be usable any more they will be put in land fill where they will simply pollute the earth where as the normal car can simply be broken down and recycled.

thats not exactly true in 7-8 years time u will need to swap out all the batterys in it which will basically be at least 4-5k which is abit of a waste, but thats only a best case scenario u might get ones that fail in a 2 years or less which means throwing a heap of money at the thing, better off buying a golf or something jdm

That's just not true. You don't have to swap batteries unless there's something seriously wrong with it. Protip: There pretty much never is. These cars have been run as taxis for ages, and though the battery capacity deteriorates over time, you're looking at maybe 20-40% decrease in battery capacity on the hardest worn Priuses, and the car still works great and still gets brilliant mpg with a worn battery. Just slightly worse in low speed cities and queue driving. There really is no reason to change out the battery unless you're unlucky. Oh and if something is WRONG with the hybrid portion of the car (not just wear), like the batteries, Toyota does give you a 10 year warranty on it. I wouldn't worry.

Yi Wei Cui Actually a more impressive car would be the BMW F30 328i. It puts out 240hp and 255lb-ft of torque for a 2.0 4-cylinder. It does have twin-scroll turbos but it doesn't have electric motors helping it out.

Sharky Golf 1.6 TDI cost about 18,800 pounds and rubbish low power toy-ota with motor from blender and half a ton of batteries about 22,000 pounds. So the difference is noticeable. In Poland difference in price between those two cars is even bigger (more than 5,300 pounds).

Well maybe... But you can buy golf 1.6 tdi for 21,500 euros and you can't buy prius for less than 26,800 eur. And you need to know that not everybody needs all that extra gadgets that are standard in prius. I didn’t know that cars in Germany are so expensive. Next time you will be buying new car come to Poland. It's not far away and you could save some serious buck (nearly 4k euros on basic golf). Its funny that car made in Germany, shipped to Poland, and massively taxed here is still cheaper than in his country of origin.

Generally, the resale value of the Golf will still be there by the end of the day, too. While the styling is completely subjective, 50mpg (80 on their economic Polo, generally unseen in the States) is hard to argue with on the Golf. If you have nowhere to commute (to work and back, of course), and are just picking up groceries in the thing once, maybe twice a week, and not using any gasoline in the Prius whatsoever - then yes, it's extremely cost effective. If you use the road liberally, however, I'd contest that the value of the Prius starts to diminish fairly quickly. If you're a lead foot, an aggressive driver, or an uninformed teenager, both of these cars suffer in more ways than just MPG, but I'd imagine the Prius fares worse in that situation too. All in all, though, it's not about what you drive, it's how you drive it. Keep your foot welded to the floor, and nothing produces impressive numbers.

Anyone who is a true petrolhead respects the veyron for the engineering that went into it, 250mph+ in a car that is built like a rolls royce... come on you cant dislike that, its not a race car its a luxury car and luxury cars aren't supposed to look like jet fighters like Lamborghini or to look like a race car such as most Ferraris envisage they are supposed to be subtle and elegant and that is what the veyron is, its relaxing rather than punching you in the face.

CouchPotato252 Not true, after working for Toyota for a number of years i have seen roughly 3 batteries replaced. + they aren't that expensive, about £800, wing mirrors can cost that much nowadays. As for breaking, they don't go wrong, taxi's rack up hundreds of thousands of miles without changing the usual wear and tear parts like break pads + discs. Just because it's not a car you would personally drive doesn't make it a bad car.

Get a quote to replace the battery (the one that starts the engine) and get back to me. Check the weight, that's gonna make tires and other drive line components wear out faster. The list goes on...

Ok bro, you don't know me. I don't trade in. It's a horrid waste of money, and I don't buy anything with less than 100k miles, making 200k miles a mere mile marker. Needless to say, I've seen vehicles break 350k without any major maintenance. May I please see sources for these 200,000 mile Prii that have only needed brake pad replacement? Plus, brake replacements aren't that big of a deal. If I cared, I could put an engine brake on any of my cars and make the brakes last 200k. I bring up the battery, the one that starts the engine not the one that runs the electric motor, because I have a friend who payed $1200 for a replacement. It's just like the battery in a normal vehicle, only it costs 15x more than a normal vehicle, and wears out just as fast as a normal battery, especially in a cold climate, such as Wisconsin. Figures like that really make the estimated $750 in fuel savings per year seem pretty lame.

+RashMan0 What a load of baloney! The "boot up" battery on a Prius usually lasts between 5 to 8 years. I replaced mine for under $200 about 3 years ago. It doesn't really start the engine. It's the size of a motorcycle battery. It supplies power to boot up the electronic systems of the Prius....which in turn powers up the HV battery which then starts the ICE. Fun fact, you'll NEVER hear a starter motor on a Prius. The engine just rolls into life, as the same motor that supplies electric traction spools the engine up! It's such a large motor it spools up the engine with minimal rotations......and none of that chugging starter motor noise! Oh my! You learnt something new about the road going enigma that is the Prius today, didn't you? Fascinating, huh?!! No other vehicle starts quite the same way. One more fun fact? Okay! The Prius can take off from a standing start, faster than most other vehicles BEFORE the engine (ICE) kicks in, because of instant torque from the electric motors. Whoosh! It's off, leaving everything else standing! Great fun, when I do this every commute. See?! You learnt another amazing thing about the so called "slow" Prius!! 😃

I love the Prius. It was a game-changer. Honda and others dabbled in the puddles, but Toyota took the plunge. They took loads of disparate technologies from the past and combined them in a car that 'most people want'. Future classic if ever there was one. However, probably a little obsolete in 2020.

2021 now, having seen the 2018 model this one looks even better...I consider myself a petrolhead and i honestly have always liked the prius. sure it might be slow (enough for 99% of the time let's be honest) boring to drive and noisy, but it's cheap to run, it ages well, it's spacious, it's pretty damn reliable and being a hybrid you can get one today second hand, and be driving a "modern" car not worrying about regulations, besides like any other toyota they seem to be holding value pretty well. not many cars can say that, and many stars have one. it's a very good résumé when you think about it

The prius accelerates to 100 km/h in 10 seconds which is perfectly normal and defenitely not slow. The prius electric motor has massive amounts of torque from 0 revs, the start so 0 to 50 km/h is instant. The prius can drive 170 kmh gps top with a fuel usage of 8.5 l/100 km, while most regular cars already use that amount of fuel while driving 130 km/h. Anyone who is a geek for autotechnology should love the hybrid concept. The cvt gearbox always uses the maximum power of the engine which is in this case 5000 rpm. Installing a classic gearbox would make it slower. Don't want a screaming engine? Then don't floor it. Regular fuel engines are boring, electric is the way to go.

As a city car yeah they are fairly economical. But top gear did a test of one vs a bmw m5 and the m5 was more economical because the Prius is dreadful at highway speeds. If you want to save the planet change your driving style. Plus the carbon footprint to make those things probably make it as bad as any 4x4, if not worse.

Never had a Prius, I really just don't like the sluggishness nor the look.... at all. That being said.... I've owned 2 Camry Hybrids however, the current being the 2015 Se and I like it a lot. It looks nice, has a lot more power than the Prius, and all you see that's different than a normal Camry on the outside is the "Hybrid" emblem. Dick measuring competition, GO!: I couldn't give a fuck less about eco-friendliness or machismo-loss. I'm a Marine infantry Combat Vet who got out in 2006 and then worked as a civilian security contractor overseas from then until 2014. I swear, eat a shit load of red-meat, drink heavily, hate Liberals (actually most Republicans nowadays too) and have enough guns to outfit my own personal platoon if I wanted to. Aside from guns, engineering technology intrigues me and the cost isn't that much different while maintaining style. You all ever see one of the Tesla Cars up close? That shit's pretty neat. Does it work for everyone? No, but it's still intriguing from an engineering standpoint. So with that said, ultimately, people seem to hate the Prius just because of it's look and performance, not the technology if you take the time to understand it. Furthermore, a car isn't going to take shit away from anyone. If you disagree, then go back to staring in the mirror and telling yourself you spend 4 hours a day lifting weights because you're "An Alpha, bro!" (that shaves his legs) and not some douche desperately trying to cover up a self-esteem issue if that makes you happy. Sure it might/might not get you laid, but it won't cover up your insecurities, just like driving something not everyone likes won't give any new ones to you unless you conform to the BS. Vanity, pure and simple, and that's fine just don't bullshit anyone about it blaming something actually useful like the technology under the hood. Sorry but IMO, the Prius is one of the ugliest cars ever made, especially the newest ones. The whole shape of the car looks terrible and then those dinky little wheels it sits on (which I might add also have a terrible design to them) complete the package. Then there's the whole thing that the Prius is so good for the environment which of course has been proven false. The Prius causes just as much if not more pollution than most regular cars. Seriously if you want to prevent pollution, then walk or ride a bicycle or at the very least, get a completely electric car. All around just a pretty crappy car and I wouldn't have one even if it was given to me for free.

love my Prius. 131.000 driven no issues at all. i bought it when it had around 112.000 km on it (not miles). the only time it needed sudden maintenace was for lightbulbs (toyota car service gives em free at any moment and location). and my accu needed a burst because i kept a light on in the car. the guy from maintenace told me: np i wont tell my boss, its service. love toyota!

Lastly, battery death is not common. Just for perspective, we remember how much hatred and anger there was over iPod batteries not working? That was $400 device and there was tons of hate from loyal apple fans who shunned apple for poor batteries. Compare that to the Prius. Few owners (the ones who actually can be trusted in this discussion about battery reliability) actually complain about battery quality or life despite the product in question being over 50 times more valuable. The fact that few Prius owners complain about them shows that it is likely blown out of proportion. Also, it stands to be stated that the taxi industry adopts them and the last thing they want is an unreliable car. For a car as ubiquitous in the carriage industry, it must be at least reliable.
