They even point out in this WhatCulture video how the lack of music makes it even more brutal. It kind of reminds me of the rape scene in Deliverance. The scariest part about that scene is that it's not even the focal part of the scene. It's happening in the background over a guy's shoulder.

For me, the hardest of these was when her head hit a tree in Hereditary. The lead up panic of the severe allergic reaction, the event, the numbness and shock from Alex Wolff and the scene the next morning waiting for Toni Collette's response, and then that wail. The horror of something that cannot be undone, and of guilt and grief. Most of us are not going to be caught up in demon-cults. But the shock as a point-of-no-return we didn't see coming passes by us? Crushing guilt over something we think we could have stopped or avoided? A tearing grief over an unexpected loss? All too believable, and almost unbearable to watch.

@@luciaelizabeth9233 You're right. But generally people who make horror movies are funny people. Well, most of them. Even with commercial stuff like the Halloween franchise or Friday the 13th, even zombie movies, there's so much tension, trying to be serious and threatening and evil, that you have to be funny when the camera is off, just so you can release that tension. Even more so with low-budget movies. Especially with handmade special effects. Or hilarious stuff like the "centipede". How can they kneel down in line without laughing? Of course, there's films (like "A Serbian Film", not "Servian"), where at the end of shooting the actors need a longer break or even some psychological help. I've heard that had happened to people who where involved in some of the Lars von Trier movies. As a film enthusiast you have always the chance to say "it's only a movie". Or like me, I know what I don't want to see, so I don't even start watching. I try to get some information beforehand and if there's torture or rape involved, then I don't watch it. Q: "What other horror movie moments made you wince and turn away from the film?" A: Almost everything from Terrifier. From the gut wrenching and sheer mean spirited nastiness of the film, to the utterly horrific and outright perverse delight the killer takes in it... this movie was, without a doubt, the movie that had me and my best friend (both long time horror fans) saying by the end: "ok, that was too much." It's vicious, nasty, horrid, and I'm actually surprised none of it made your list here. Possibly the most harrowing thing I've ever seen was the rape scene in Irreversible. It was an unsparing depiction of the horror of sexual violence. The camera stayed on a single shot for the duration so there were no edits to distract from the act or remind you "it was just a film".

@@heathermillsphantomlimb9314 it's definitely not one for you then. The scene itself is absolutely central to the plot and not played for titillation. Unlike a lot of films it doesn't use this as a basis for a "revenge and redemption" narrative. A young woman is brutally assaulted and that sparks a spiral of further violence that solves nothing. It's actually a more intelligent film than you expect because it ends up being a brutal exploration of male violence and completely undermines the whole "rape revenge" cinema trope. But yeah, all that aside, watching it once was enough for me and I honestly don't think I could sit through that scene again.
@heathermillsphantomlimb93142 жыл бұрын
@@davidgomersall7185 at least it had a point, even if the point was horrific. The last r*pe scene that made me want to physically attack someone was the scene in The Girl Next Door where that little piece of shit kid is doing the victim, almost lazily because she’s starved and dehydrated, and doesn’t have the energy to fight it. I understood why it was in there, because people need to know what horrors the girl the movie was based on really went through, but like that movie was for you, once was enough. People are just animals sometimes.
@davidgomersall71852 жыл бұрын
@@heathermillsphantomlimb9314 I think my problem is that a lot of the films use violent sexual assault as a motivation for the character or people adjacent to them to become avenging heroes and provide an excuse for them indulging in what is usually pretty horrendous behaviour themselves. Kind of like the "girlfriend in the fridge" trope from the world of comic books (have a quick Google search for the term if you've not heard it before). Irreversible doesn't do that, there's nothing heroic about the vengeance that is meted out, the act that set it in motion is depicted as cold and brutal. The narrative of the film unfolds backwards so we see how her boyfriend shared some responsibility for her being alone and vulnerable, before that how they had started the day as normal (which is actually how the film ends). Whether it's a good film is up for debate but it certainly asks some uncomfortable questions and is definitely not in the category of extreme /exploitation cinema.

That scene is absolutely horrific and definitely belongs on the list, but the context of the film itself almost makes it,,, worse? There’s been a few violent moments but the film tends to cut away from massively gore-y moments(e.g. “amputation” scene) making this sudden excess of gore jarring, particularly considering a lot of the film is just the characters walking (its engaging, I swear).

Oh! I would also like to add, in Terrifier there is a similar scene. The fact that Toni Collete didn't get any award nominations for Hereditary is a testament to the horror genre being chronically overlooked by the powers that be. That scene and when she sees her husband die are so fucking on point

_Kill List_ and the hammer sequence made me physically recoil from the screen. Not only for the sheer brutality of it, but the affirmation that the character is capable of it.

For me, it was the bit in the Witch when the witch stole the baby and...used it. My son was like a week old at the time so it really freaked me out. Still gives me chills to think about itm

There's a German movie from 2009 I just saw called Melancholie der Engel that makes these films look like rom coms. If you thought A Serbian Film was great, but a little too cheerful, look that one up.

For me, the horror movie that has a scene that I refuse to watch, to this day, is the bottle scene in "Pan's Labyrinth" ("El laberinto del fauno"). I didn't watch it the first time I saw the movie and I still haven't seen it. Just hearing the repetitive sounds of a full glass bottle hitting a man's nose into his brain by the villain was bad enough, I do not want to see that.

I love the saw movies, and we were very pleasantly surprised the new saw movie didn’t suck. Saw 8 wasn’t very good, so we didn’t have high hopes for the new movie. But it was actually pretty great and I need to complete my collection by adding it.

Personally I consider Saw 3D worse then 8. What could’ve been an epic finale focused on characters we’ve been following for several movies was just a huge disappointment. Saw 8 is meh but 3D is a huge letdown.

Honestly Human Centipede 2 you got to hand it to main guy who plays the villian. I mean WOW its mind blowing. Martyrs i can never get out of my head. It just Forever Disturbs me. I just don't think you can top the Original Saw franchise movies. Worst EVER scene of body splitting I seen personally is in Terrifier. I just can't explain how explicit it was to see. WOW. Plus actor in Human Centipede 2 seriously should get an Award. This guys acting honestly Blew My Mind. That film was sheer craziness. I can never forget it

One scene that I think is worse than the majority of this list is the dismemberment scene in Green Inferno.. where a guys eyes and tongue are cut out and then all his limbs severed, finishing with his head all 100% on screen full gore, while he screams... dear God those screams.. I'm not much of a "look away" person when it comes to gory stuff and that one got me good. I had to take a beat to psych myself up before watching it again. There also could have been multiple candidates from the 2013 Evil Dead remake on here as well. That movie is relentless. I really think the director was just trying to see how much on screen gore he could squeeze into one movie, and they leave like... nothing to the imagination. The effects were on point. The house that jack built, however, was severely overhyped and other than the one scene mentioned and like... one other involving a duck, the whole thing was pretty boring, with dreadful pacing, and left me feeling like I had just wasted 2 hours of my life. Like.. cool, thanks for explaining grapes and other nonsense to me for 30 minutes I guess? What a pretentious pile of shit.

It's getting more difficult to watch these films and these scenes of mental and physical anguish. These directors and producers continue to push the envelope to the limits of what one's mind can handle visually and audibly.

7:08= I have never seen this movie. I have, however, seen the shining. And this face, right here, gives me SO MANY Jack Nicholson vibes as he deteriorates in his madness in the shining. I have to wonder if this actor used Jack as an inspiration during this seen. It's so uncanny, and it's a similar face someone might make after one too many, or the face someone makes after realizing that perhaps three weed brownies was a bit too much. I think I will go see this movie now.

When it comes to horror movies, I love the scenes that are filled with extreme gore, brutality, killing and extreme harm even the ones that are not meant for my age.

Excess Flesh. The entire film is an endurance test - a horrific reflection of self-harm, eating disorders, and impossible social demands that can literally drive you crazy. Although there are some suitably gory moments, the truly revolting moments involve realizing just how repugnant eating food can be.

I’m kinda surprised to not see anything from Martyrs on here. Headless would be another great film with some likely disturbing moments. Of course there are films like Blood Shock that definitely deserve a spot on a list such as this. Then we can get to the more hardcore films like the August Underground films, Traces of Death, The Most Disturbed Human Being On Planet Earth and of course the Vomit Gore trilogy 😈😉
