The Australian one is rubbish. It's safe and well-maintained, if you plan your trip properly you'll be fine, thousands cross this every year. Take an appropriate 4wd, rest and change drivers, carry spare petrol and plenty of drinking water and motor parts, stop at the intermittent roadside cafes and motels, leave your itinerary with someone back home (and make regular contact) and have the appropriate mobile phone plan. There are also emergency services if needed - you just have to join a plan and be prepared to wait. How on earth this can be prepared to those crumbling single-lane roads on top of precarious mountains is beyond me, it's only dangerous if you're a fool. Hardly the same thing.

+Joshua Gamble The thing is, all these roads are inherently dangerous due to flooding, bandits, collapsing roads, narrow mountainous unprotected roads etc. It's the roads or environment that are dangerous. In case of the Australian one, it's the DRIVERS who are stupid and unprepared, it's not an issue to travel it if you do your homework, very well-made roads and there are roadside services who will travel. A deer or badger can kill you if they jump out in front of your car (mind you I do accept there ARE a lot of animals in the bush in Oz)......

Amazed to see Skipper's Canyon road in this. Remember my dad driving our family over it when I was about eight. I'm not easily scared but my memories of that drive are the worst. The only thing visible when looking out of the window is the drop to the bottom. I always wondered what would happen if someone was coming the other way. Thankfully there were a lot fewer cars back in the 1960's.
