Iron Man and smoke on the water were the first 2 songs I learned. The person who taught me back in high school had an ability that I have seen only a few times since. He could hear a song and then play it back note for note. But he could care less about his talent. Hated when we would be at a party and someone would want to see him do it. I on the other hand had to practice practice practice to get something new learned. I was so jealous of his ability and questioned why God would give this talent to someone who didn't appreciate it like I would've. But in time I became a better player. I still couldn't do his parlor trick but I began to write my own and he was merely a monkey copying what he heard.

@@jakubwroblewski2712 you can play that opening riff in regular tuning. Also All Along The Watchtower is a pretty beginner friendly song if you just play the rhythm chords. I spent 25 years+ doing that, other than a few simple songs I could play all the way through that didn't have much lead/solos. I had fun, but didn't really progress and never felt good about my playing. About 5 years ago I decided I was going to learn a full song and focused on Welcome to the Jungle - amazed myself. Once I'd done that I taught myself lots of solos like Smoke on the Water, Stairway to heaven, a load of ACDC, Beatles, pretty much all the classics. I feel like I wasted 25 years - I've improved more in the past 5 years than in all the rest of my guitar playing time. Riffs are great to learn when you're starting out, but to really progress you need to learn full songs.
