I still can't get over you not knowing House of the Rising Sun, it's a classic! great song and chord sequence, fairly simple too. I see most people play Smoke on the Water wrong because of the key , or they use a pick ( Ritchie mostly uses two finger to pinch the two strings for the riff or pick and finger to pinch them ) he also frequently moves it around on the neck. The hard part is actually getting the rhythm right in the verse, it's mainly just Gm but then has that F on the 3rd beat of the last bar of each line for just one beat.

I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn" I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way. The shape of a power chord is natural. The fingers want to go there. And, maintaining the distance between fingers when the fingers naturally sit in that position is easy as well. I was learning all kind of punk songs days after I learned what a power chord was. So, for that reason I kinda disagree.
@marmota76153 жыл бұрын
I agree, I am a huge fan of complex chords, like the ones used in Bossa Nova (the brazilian equivalent to Jazz). But human hands seem like they were made to do power chords
@KinnySonata3 жыл бұрын
I do agree with that to some degree, but that can also be because you both seem to have the natural talent to do so. For a lot of people who aren't that gifted, they may find power chords hard to do themselves. So I, myself, wouldn't say they are hard or easy, just that some people pick it up naturally and some don't. I picked up power chords fast myself, but I didn't find it too easy to begin with.

For some weird ass reason I actually cannot play power chords cleanly, for some reason I do not understand (and even though im a punk, punk rock fan), I have an easier time playing Bossa Nova chords than power chords. So the irony of the “Smoke On The Water” thing, is that for being the “most played beginner riff” or whatever, in reality, no one knows how to play it. Even when they do manage to play it in the right key, it’s still wrong most of the time. Everyone plays 0-3-5 on the D and G strings simultaneously, and so on, but the real way that Blackmore played it was 5 and 5 on A and D, then 3 and 5 across D and G. Basically everyone plays the whole riff on D and G strings, and then they go “this is how its really played”. Wrong. Everything is played on D and G strings, except the G chord, which is played on 5th fret A and D strings. Theres no open strings being used in the whole riff.
@RushfanUK3 жыл бұрын
The reason Ritchie played it that way is because he plucks the strings on the opening rather than using a plectrum, he has said most people get this bit wrong.

Funny that house of the rising sun is one of the first that I learned but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. I think it sorta depends on the individual learning what songs are easier, kind of depending what chords they can pick up easier.. I started playing before the internet so I learned whatever stuff I could find in guitar magazines and the few people I could learn from. Some were oldies. I think heart of gold by Neil Young was a decent one for me. I felt like I could play something...lol.. Hendrix was my main influence really so I tried to play some of his stuff.. Actually always did pretty good at picking up Hendrix for some reason.. maybe because I wanted it so bad...lol . Another obsessed by the Man... But I mainly learned anything I could from anyone to advanced back then.. I remember getting guitar magazines and the cd that came with it. Mostly licks.. you might learn a song or two if you were lucky but a lot of licks and parts of songs.. and some months weren't as great as others for selection but usually always something to learn. It was what we had and books and cd's or videos . I really don't remember seeing many videos.. You could find books with cd's at music stores.. I feel like I could get much better much quicker these days with available resources. The internet and all.. But you need someone to help you get started at least. Maybe a few people have done it without help but it would be much easier to get going.. Then jamming with people! Even if it's bad at first, it's gonna get your timing more in the pocket.. Sorry for the ramble, just my experience.. As a self taught player mostly...

According to Ritchie Blackmore himself Smoke on the Water was actually played by finger picking the d and g strings on open 3 and 5. No pick was used. Fun fact.

@@DeadShred9 I just think he meant it as surprising because of Tyler’s knowledge of music and guitars and that was a pretty popular song so it was odd for him to not know it.

Right? I thought this is the most popular song in the world history... Especially the guitar pattern

5:19 likely they mean muting the low E and possibly A string with your thumb. I know I do that a lot with power chords

When the Animals covered the song, "House of the Rising Sun" had already been covered by Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Roy Acuff and, just a couple of years earlier, by Nina Simone and Bob Dylan. But for some reason, most think the Animals wrote the song.

The Animals version is thendefi itive version. A lot of songs are like that. For example, I Will Always Love You is associated with Whitney Houston ut was a Dolly Parton song. Personally, I like Dolly's version better.

@@theragingplatypus4743 Crazy is a Willie Nelson song, I like Patsy's. Love Hurts isn't even originally Roy Orbison, but I like Nazareth's. Back in the day, doing covers was a thing.

@@talastra It goes through cycles, we just happen to be in another "covers" cycle. KZbin made it easy.

Good Riddance was actually the first song I learned when I decided to pick up the guitar. Perhaps I chose a bad first song to learn, but I picked it up fairly quickly and I'd say it fits on the list. Taught me 5 of the basic chord shapes and got me familiar with how to pick accurately.
