@@chrisredfield6274 Not really, I think it would be fine, I mean, setting up a system where the important or more desirable armors are in a universal size, while the most common might not fit your character, after all, you're more likely to want to sell them. About the "avoiding the main quest" issue, I like how Dragon's Dogma approaches it. The antagonist (obviously, a Dragon) do not attack you or the world (kinda), he just sits on a mountain and awaits for you, saying that "the choice (to challenge him) falls not to me (him) or to the whims of fate... it is yours alone" Well, no hurries then.

13:16 To Fallout's credit, they HAVE an explanation why everything still works centuries After The Bombs Fell. The pre-Bombs-Fell world of Fallout never developed the transistor, but they fully embraced nuclear power, to the point where there are no wall outlets; everything that uses power has its own miniaturized nuclear power plant. Buildings have larger reactors to power all the building lights, and they can have their cores pulled to run Powered Armor, the single most energy-intensive device in the world, since it drains a core in minutes, when a BUILDING would have lasted centuries on that same core.

Invisible Barriers is a big one. The notion that your character can be stopped by an invisible wall, or an obstacle that wouldn't stop a toddler (like say, a 5cm tall barrier). From an immersion point of view, I prefer it when they make at least a token effort with the way they constrain your ability to explore. Like natural barriers (such as cliffs), or magical/technological wards. Something more substantial than "You can't go this way", or "Your knees aren't working properly around here for some reason".

In any case I found a suitable nook, then taped my controller joystick in the forwards position which made my character run endlessly against the wall. I went and had lunch and by then time I returned the Athletisism skill had increased many times and I’d gained several levels. Similarly as a mage I’d level Alteration magic by casting a weak unlock spell against a gate locked with a higher skill level lock. I’d just read a book whilst pressing the cast button with one finger. I think I did it with mysticism too, I only by casting a weak detect life spell endlessly.

On the subject of shops always being open every day, I do agree that it's odd, if not outright bizarre, that so many games where characters are supposed to feel "real" with schedules and such never take breaks, time off, etc. Yeah, it'd be inconvenient to have to haul your goods elsewhere because a shopkeeper needed to take a day to recuperate or focus on themselves, but it'd be an opportunity for each shop to have multiple shopkeepers that cycle day by day, and then have some quests or parts of quests depend on meeting a certain shopkeeper or having enough of a reputation/relationship with a shopkeeper to get a new angle to use in a quest. Like, imagine in a Fallout game you had a quest, and you could talk to a shopkeeper who takes over the shop 3 days a week while the "main" shopkeeper is off after their 4 days of the week, and you can talk to them and get a bit of information or buy a unique item that gives you a new method of resolving a particular quest peacefully, or avoiding negative consequences if you decide to resolve the quest with violence?

Problem with that is if these systems are big and complicated they are hard to control and it might all end up just feeling random to the player because it's impossible to keep track of everything. Like it could work but RPGS would have to slow down and probably narrow their scope. Like what good is it to know who works at the bar in Megaton on Wednesday when you're just fast traveling around a giant world and probably don't even know what day it is? (or even spend enough time in Megaton to notice these systems at play) Only really works if you give clear feedback to the player and the player knows how to interact with these systems (outside of trial and error)

The old MMO City of Heroes was updated early on so that mobs would run away from any player that was more than a 4 or 5 levels higher than them. Most missions were indoor instanced missions and their location could be anywhere, including low level zones. Higher level players got tired of getting attacked by mobs, outside the mission doors, that couldn't even scratch them and the devs listened and changed their behavior.

Skyrim (and other TES games) is one of the worst when it comes to mechanics like theese. Not only are guards all psychic - as in "ah, you got two rusty nails in your inventory." (looks at them) "This one is legit, but the other one you stole you scum!" - but shop keepers are too. Every time you steal from one of them and not get caught, there's a chance that they magicaly discern - probably by reading in tea leafes - that it was you and send some thugs to "teach you a lesson". The thugs are apparently psychic too, come to think of it... Walk out of a town you've never been before and have just enterd for the first time in your life half an hour ago, three big muscled, small brained gentlemen are waiting for you as if you being there in this moment was in any way predictable...

@@Bird_Dog00 well, magical tracking is actually a thing in skyrim, so it does somewhat make sense... they do with magic what we are heading towards with technology in being able to track pretty much everyone at any time (in the real world it'd be by tracking their phone) if you get a quest, you usually have a pointer that shows you exactly where the target is... and also there is the spell "clairvoyance" if you for some reason want to actually cast a spell that does exactly what you can already do anyway? how they tell if something is stolen or not, i'm not sure, but maybe it is like the tags put on clothes irl, they remove a magical tag when you pay for the item?
@Bird_Dog00
@Bird_Dog00 2 жыл бұрын
@@briwanderz hmm... The magic tracking thing doesn't ring true to me. When you are for example looking for a bandit leader, the waypoint marker usually leads you to a cave near where the bandits were seen operating. So, I'd put that down to educated guess and not magic. The marker on the leader is nothing more than a game mechanic for the player's convenience. Remember the quest with the redguards looking for a noble woman with a scar on her cheek? If they had access to a magic tracking system, they wouldn't have been asking around all of Skyrim and harrassing any readguard woman they came accross.

I like Stalker's version of 'leveling up', because it is entirely linked to the weapons and clothes that you find progressing throughout the game. You don't get any points to spend, your character is static in that sense. You just find better gear as you move further in the game. This eliminates the grinding and tedium of leveling up, as getting better gear is equivalent of progressing to later levels. And even then the guns you get don't deal that much more damage, sometimes just a larger magazine, higher precision or faster reload will be a massive advantage.

Obviously you dont go broken leg on one night and full recovery the next day, but it is very noticeable for wounds like small scratches or cuts. Basically, when you get them, they might stay open the whole day you're awake, but when you sleep on it, it suddenly closes up and recovers.

I’ve always thought it would be cool if there was a game that was designed with multiple missions presented at once, but the player can only choose one mission and the others would go away. And then based on that decision, the next set of quests would be different based on which quest you chose. You could have a really diverse set of quests and story direction and it would also create a huge sense of replayablility to go back and pick different quests to progress differently. I’m sure there are games out there that already do this, but still wish more games would adopt this idea and not just use it as a marketing tactic....looking at you Cyberpunk 2077 👀

Although that idea sounds very appealing, it's incredibly difficult to create such a game. The game might end up buggy as fck, for example the Fallout 4 quest where you may betray the institute and start a "war" between them and your minutemen it can happen that you can't continue the main story at all, I had to reload a save I did 7 hours before to undo the bug after I realised it was a bug. Also if the game doesn't end up popular enough then the resources would go to waste and it'd be a mayor loss for the company. Btw if you like consequences after your decision you could try the Dragon Age games.

@@infinityscorner8473 It actually shouldn't be that hard to do. You start with your world populated without quests, then when someone starts one, the appropriate locations are then populated for the player to explore. When you finish, then the next set of quests become available. The issue with games like Fallout 4 is that you can be running multiple quest lines at the same time, which may not play nice with each other under certain circumstances. In this case you can only follow one main quest line per "chapter" and it's outcome determines the available choices for the next one, where you only get to chose one.

That's because all Potions are classified as Restoration effects, and they forgot to restrict potions from gear that boosts Restoration school effects. It's entirely an exploit, not an intended mechanic.

Hey falcon great video also Merry Christmas!. To answer that last question about if sleeping can heal you, that is a legit thing but it works differently then in video games for obvious reasons. For starters, while your awake as well as moving, talking, basically doing anything that requires energy from your body to do your body cannot heal nearly as fast as while your sleeping as there is next to no energy being allocated towards physical recovery. But when you do go to sleep a good 70-80% of the energy you would normally use while awake gets fully focused towards healing because your body isn't wasting energy it needs in order to heal injuries. But at the same time this largely depends on a few factors such as Matabolism and how healthy you are in general. I know alot of this does sound like bullshit but when you actually look at the facts about the human body then you will see what I meant by all the previously mentioned bits of information. Also mind any grammar mistakes I did as it is very late and I haven't been able to sleep yet lol so some of my words may be a little jumbled.

#1 for me, especially given technology capabilities today, numbers based damage and vitality. That stuff should be material, physics, biology based. Like a wolf damaging a guy in chainmail and lightning missing a character dressed the same? Same with FPS games. GTFOH.

Don't even get my started on how weapons and armor just Don't Work Like That ™ Or how combat happens in turns where characters act one at a time and nobody reacts But know what really grinds my gears? Missions failing because the main character got knocked out or something but the whole rest of the team is fine and could even treat the MC

On the topic of NPC shops, Rune Factory 4 has this cool system where the shops hours are different based on if its a week day or weekend, and when their shops open, sometimes the NPC is upwards of an hour or so late to showing up. One of the NPCs even has an honor system, where random days he won't show up at his store at all, but leaves a bowl on the countertop for money. Interacting with it shows a sign that says "Take what you need, I respect the honor system." and brings up the normal shop interface. It's really cool. That guy could be going on vacation and still be making money.

I would love it if getting better at shit worked the way in real life as it did in a level up system. I'd be that one anime about the girl who spent 300 years killing slimes until she maxed out her level. I'd be more than happy to grind out something easy and repetitive to get better at absolutely everything. That would be way better and cheaper than college...or even school in general. Just buy lab rats by the dozen and step on them and next thing you know, you're a doctor. "Yeah i just put all my points into intelligence and medicine"

@@hugofontes5708 I do like me some chaos. Still, i think if we actually did get all the knowledge and skills we'd need from leveling up, everything would actually work perfectly. Kind of like downloading information directly into our brains. A personal sci-fi favorite.

I'm surprised how many of these aren't issues in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Yes, the game has its own quirks, but it manages most of these issues incredibly well and in an immersive way. Something I found out recently, after hundreds of hours spent in the game, is that shopkeepers sell the goods you sell them, thus making a profit. So the next time you visit an armorsmith after selling all the stuff you looted off bandits or cumans, they'll have more money than previously. There's a reason it's my favorite RPG thus far!

Fun fact: sleeping actually speeds up your healing process, whenever you sick or injured, did yall notice that when you sick you tend to sleep most of the day? Is because your body is recovering, but still is not as fast and absurd as video games makes it out to be😂 but makes sense

It would be so easy to fix the leveling up thing: Decide on START of a level which thing you want to train/concentrate on, but it is not immediatly given to you, Instead until you get to the next level (sort of your next life part) you increase that one or two stat and get graduatly better at that one or two things until you reach the next level, where you pick what you train on next. That way it would completely make sense and still absolutely be fun.
