Your story about dropping the rope with stressful people reminded me of a similar time in my life that reshaped how I saw my friends and where I put in my time and effort. While I was going through IVF I experienced a side effect to a medication that made me extremely sick for weeks and could have become lethal. In that time I didn’t have the energy to reach out to people and for the entire time I was sick, only two friends checked in to see how I was doing. My so-called best friend didn’t even text me. No way she could have disappeared for weeks without me worrying and checking in. It hurt SO MUCH, but I’ve reinvested my time and energy into the friends who were there for me and making new friends, and I’m so much happier now.

When you were talking about not wasting energy on certain relationships even if they’re family, I totally wanted to high-five you! It doesn’t mean there's anything wrong with you, or even with them - it’s just that somehow together you don’t work. Many years ago, before ‘toxic relationships’ really became a thing talked about, my brother and I went separate ways. I got SOOO much flack from certain family members, including our mom! (and still do). But it was one of the best decisions EVER, right up there with my marriage, kids, career, and house :) And I'm sure for it has been great for him and his family as well. Does it mean I wish him anything bad? Certainly not! But do I HAVE to have a relationship with him, when it only caused both of us pain? Nope :) It’s part of MY number one rule: Live my life in a way that works for ME, even if it looks totally weird to someone else. That other person doesn’t have the same strengths and weaknesses I do, and they don’t have to live with me everyday, but I do, so why not give myself a break? 😁

Haha, great rules Cass!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts - your ADHD experience has helped us so much to realize we are not crazy, just need to work within our limitations! 💕 For what it's worth, I do take issue with the "smarter not harder" mentality, which is so popular these days. I love how your key point was: "if you get the SAME results" - not similar or marginal results. Living a life of shortcuts can actually exacerbate our anxiety and ADHD because the quicker we get things done, the more we feel compelled to do. So many young people today have strong feelings about issues, but they don't know WHY and they don't take the time to get the information they need to make a sound decision. They take the first thing they hear as truth and don't have the ability to think it through logically. Teaching our kids to do short cuts in Math is great in theory, but scientific research has shown that doing long math actually teaches your brain to slow down, focus and understand WHY it works - thereby understanding math better, not just the functions. Teaching short math should only be done AFTER teaching long math. It's all about creating proper neuropathways. Pen & pencil and actually writing out lists, papers, etc does the same thing. Don't get me wrong, sometimes shortcuts are absolutely necessary but it should not be our daily life. BTW, I'm using voice text as I speak this so I can ride the treadmill. LOL 😂 A good way to get more things done, for sure, but I realize; I AM sacrificing my brain health and my anxiety to do so. One of my ADHD rules is: "More often than not, take the long way home." Do the job well and make sure it's done right because going back to fix something ultimately wastes time. If you have ADHD, did you make it to the end of this post? 😂😂😂

Love your rules! I have started some rules for myself, just to remind myself of how I deserve to be treated. Here's a couple: I am not disposable. Love does not come with conditions. You have value because you are YOU. No one else has to recognize that for it to be true. So glad you mentioned Mel Robbins. She is amazing and inspires me so much! And check it out...She is interviewing ME on her podcast today! (10/6)

OK Cass, where do we send the check? These words of wisdom are incrediblely helpful. I've spent time with therapists who taught me the same things. I've been pondering doing that exercise with not reaching out to people and see who reaches out to me. I have a good idea what's going to happen. And it will be disappointing and will make me sad for sometime. Hope I'm wrong. Will be happier in the long run.

It all boils down to mindset! Love to listen to Mel's podcast while decluttering and cleaning- or doing "nothing". Remember - there is success enough for evryone, so instead of competing eachother, let's lift eachother instead ❤️

I’ll see your minivan and raise you an ‘80s model station wagon like my Grandma had. It was a tank, it was a truck, it was a like riding in a boat, (if you were older it was a party wagon). It fit you, your spouse, your kids, their friends, the picnic supplies… AND you could reach the top to strap things down even if you were short, AND they had some of that sweet, sweet faux woodgrain panel inside. And sometimes outside. Nothing but winning.

You are ABSOLUTELY right about minivans. The sliding doors, the extra seating, plenty of cargo space, the ease of creating more space with the stow and go seats. You can’t beat it. I’m 5’3” and I like that a minivan allows me to sit high - sedans are too low that I have to drop down into the seat. SUVs are too high. I have to hoist my 59-year old self into place or require a step stool to get in! And now that grandchildren are completing our family, it’s back to the reliable minivan. No other option serves a person better

I've heard so many times about surrounding myself with the right people, but kind of didn't have hope because I lacked the actual people in my life. Thanks for the pointer about virtual options - I follow Mel Robbins, I'll start watching more. It's time to shop for a new (used) car, and you've convinced me to look at minivans too, not just SUVs.

Yes, the virtual thing helps a lot! I’ve never had a lot of friends, especially since I moved to a much bigger city 9 years ago (after spending most of my life in the previous one where I had built everything around). With you-tubers and a couple of virtual support groups, I don’t feel as lonely as I used to :)

Personally I like Cass channel most out of all organizing youtubers that I've ever seen. I guess I see myself most in her videos, and I love her enthoustic ways. It's motiving, inspiring, helpful, and original. And just a good fit, often I'm like: hey I'm like that too, or I have that situation too.

I LOVE my minivan! I have a painting business and it fits everything I need: ladders, paint trays, drop cloths, etc. We use it like a truck and stow the seats so we can haul things to the dump and move furniture. My minivan is old and rusty and just keeps on going. When I was a Cub Scout leader, we took the boys on a field trip. As they got in my van, one of them commented, "Wow, this van is really old." My reply was, "Yeah, if it was new, I wouldn't be letting Cub Scouts in it." Boom!

Thanks for explaining the difference between Minivans and SUV's. I have been wanting a minivan, without the having to climb up high into the front seat. But be able to take my 58" piano case to play it away from home. The seats going flat is exactly what I need.

I love this video and can relate to this so so much! After some traumatic life events I’ve allowed my adhd to take over and I’ve found excuses to put off doing anything and everything. I have ocd & adhd which I used to my advantage to always keep a spotless organized home and I was so proud of it. Now I’ve added lupus, RA, and an epidural lipoma (benign spinal tumor that at the moment is stable. If it grows and presses on the spine it will need removing but there’s a chance it might not need removing. It’s a wait and see kinda thing but for right now sounds worse than it is.) So when the extreme fatigue & joint pain came then came an affair, lost my MIL I adored, and lost my grandma all back to back. Oh & we had to have our English bulldog put down due to cancer. And that’s just the big stuff. So the rug was jerked out from under me and all that I had based my life around, my husband & our little family, was no longer a constant. I just stopped doing anything. Then my youngest daughter after a year and a half of homeschooling due to bullying decided she missed being around other kids and went back to public school. I loved our time together and learning with her. So I was very lost. I felt everyone had a purpose but me. I finally decided that if God allows me to wake up each morning I still have a purpose. I may not know what it is but I have one. So I’ll get up and try to do what I can and if an opportunity knocks I’ll listen. If nothing else, this is a biggie, I have a much closer relationship with God. I truly believe I’d replaced my relationship with Him with my marriage. It says he is a jealous God. And if what happened hadn’t happened I probably wouldn’t have gone to Him the way I did. We are working on our marriage and family so all is not lost. But I also have always been a procrastinator and I learned at age 27 that I have adhd. I’ve always wondered if I’d had meds in college if I would have finished my bachelors degree because as soon as it got really hard I’d quit. I did that many many times. I did finish my junior year with a 3.833gpa. But I had one teacher & student that for whatever reason decided they didn’t like me. I had to take 2 classes under that teacher and I just couldn’t handle it. But now that I’m disabled I did get to become a stay at home mom which is all I ever wanted anyway. It’s just my youngest 2 are now 14 and I don’t know what I’ll do next. I’m sure something will come to me. I have bought a few online classes I haven’t done yet that I need to do. And I’ve bought 2 cricut machines to hopefully learn a hobby that I can make some spending money doing. Now I’ve just got to get this darn house I’ve neglected in shape and trust me it’s almost a hoarders mess! We have a tiny home that has way too many people and their stuff. I’m almost ready to burn it all to the ground and start over. 😂 But once it’s clean then I get to decorate and design my craft space which has me excited. So I’m using that to motivate me to clean. And I bought a tineco floor one S5 pro2. I’m so excited about it because mopping was hurting me too much to do and I can handle this. Our entire home is tile. And we are redoing the entire house one room at a time plus painting. It’s been 12 years since it’s be redone and everything is old, outdated, and nicked up. I want it redone. I just don’t want to do it but I’ll have to. Can you tell I have adhd. 😂 Sorry I didn’t mean to give you my life story or go all over the world and back. 🤦♀️🤷♀️

Oh I so agree with you about a minivan. I am 57 years old and I drove a minivan for over 30 years. In 2018, I bought the minivan of my dreams. The color I wanted inside and out and all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately it ended up being a lemon…big time. My husband kept nagging me to get rid of it, so I finally did this past January and bought an SUV and I have missed it EVERY SINGLE DAY! I could just stick my foot under the side doors as well as the back door and they would open automatically. I absolutely loved it and miss it so much. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Keep your van!!

I love the minivan! I’m retired, so I ended up in this fancy little SUV (because it’s cool). Let’s bring back the minivan!!!! I love your videos. They are helping me on my journey to a more organized, productive life. Keep up the good work. I love your 10 rules as well as your minivan "movement"! I too own an older minivan and I am no longer cool...But I love my minivan. It does everything I need and is easy to get in and out of. It is the BEST for travel on long trips, you can carry so much stuff, and everyone rides in comfort. Who would not want a minivan???

Back when I was a kid, I used to be so jealous of the kids who’s mom’s had mini-vans. Maybe I was just weird, but I always thought they were super cool and always looked forward to riding in my friends van’s. Mind you, this was the 90’s when mini-vans were mostly square and had no automatic opening doors and oftentimes had wood paneled sides. My parents only had cars (and one time an 80’s station wagon with reverse seats in the back- can those be brought back too??😂)...smooshing 3 kids in the backside was rough. I drive an SUV with a toddler now, but maybe I could personally rock a mini-van someday 😂

Wow, I resonated with everything you said in this video. I also have social anxiety and automatically say no to social events because I just know I’m going to say or do something stupid and then ruminate about it for days afterwards. Like you said, that has made my life safe, but very small and friend-less. You really seem like someone I wouldn’t be too freaked out to hang out with. Thank you for these rules, I’m going to try to implement them in my own life, and see what happens.

Hi Cass, I'm in a process of changing myself. I didn't know the meaning of ADHD, but after seeing your video on ADHD, I realised that I have most of them. And the hacks what you provided was amazing. I see hundreds of organising videos. But none changed me, some say that they were messy blah blah... but after seeing your video it just clicked, it was so geniune, it just motivates me to change myself because I see myself in you. Your videos does not give me a guilty feeling that I'm unable to do things. On the contrary, it just tells me that it's Ok take it easy if I can why can't you.... Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️... It's hard but I will do it...

Such good rules Cass. I struggle with comparing myself to other KZbinrs and I have to continually remind myself that I also have a full time job and can't do everything that they do. I LOVED my minivans, or "Mommy Mobile." I packed all kinds of "just in case" things in there. Had to get rid of mine, because my oldest got too tall for it. His legs didn't fit between the seats, and he was miserable for the last 2 years, before he started driving. Taking the mini-van to a drive-in was awesome too... Pile everything in, get there, put all the seats down, laid out blankets, we were set until time to go home. Mini-Vans for the win!!!!

LOL on minivans! Today’s minivans are absolutely versatile and way more gadgety than when I had one. My mom had one at 74 because she loved the versatility and packing room for travel. They aren’t anything I need or want these days - our kids are grown and the 3rd seat is usually folded down in our MDX, and I can park this easier than my minivan or the XL SUV I used to drive (post minivan).

I love you Cas! I learn from you, and you always seem to confirm how I think and how I feel. Your videos are always a pick-me-up in my day, and I always watch to the end! I am with you 100% on minivans. When the first minivans came out, I knew that they had been designed 100% for me. A couple of weeks ago, a friend backed into the front driver's side fender of our 22-year old minivan. It already had a dent in that fender because we had hit a large living room chair that was left in the middle of a dark road out in the country. But now we are getting it fixed. The headliner is falling down all over- the WalMart grocery guy now recognizes me by the condition of the headliner in my van. So, we are working on getting that fixed too. We prefer to keep our minivan going because it is practical and reliable transportation. My husband maintains it, so I don't worry about driving it anywhere. I have never understood the idea of an SUV as a status symbol. So count me in- minivan owners unite! The people who think minivans are not cool are the ones who are missing out!

Love your ten rules! I work as a beauty consultant and my company’s motto is God First, Family Second, Career Third. I was a teacher when I started this, and schools did not believe they came third! But since I started implementing this slogan, my life has greatly improved! Another motto I got from a fellow consultant is “If it doesn’t bring joy or doesn’t make me money, then I’m not doing it!” That, too, had helped me make a lot of decisions. I am now retired from teaching (6 years!) and another teacher reached out needing judges for an academic fair. I said yes! That will bring me joy!
