This is why I like having a truck camper instead. I'm not doing any hardcore overland expeditions, I just want to be able to get far enough away to escape drama and the people who generate it.

I agree! I have an overhead slide in utility shell built out of fiberglass. I just got out of trucking after 12 years and got my pickup up and running after sitting at the trucking yard for four and a half years. It's a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 Access cab with a 6-ft bed. I've been tempted by trailers but I honestly don't have a place to safely store one, nor do I want to go to the expense of buying one when my rig now is fully paid off. I'm trying to get this rig set up where I can live in it while I'm in the United States. I have a microwave and an ARB refrigerator behind the driver and passenger seats. I built a plywood deck at bed rail level which gives me a sizeable basement below the sleeping area. I have an attic above the truck cab where all my clothes and shoes are stored. I have a six gallon water jug and a 2000 watt generator in the basement. This arrangement frees up the sleeping area but does require a bit of a climb to get in. I have heavy duty bumpers with a winch. Because I'm in Texas and it's smoking hot, I'm trying to figure out air conditioning. So far it looks like I need to buy a portable unit and place it in the rear left corner of the sleeping area with the exhaust hose coming out of the port hole of the left barn door. A window unit would be too impractical for my setup. Here's a link from my old website of my build a few years ago. Back when we lived in a somewhat normal world.. www.angelfire.com/tx/nale/durashell.html

They are right this varies tremendously. I boondock. My rv furnace requires 110 or a generator so I have not used it in years. I spent the last three winters in my rv using a little buddy heater with a long hose to a 20 gallon propane tank and this works fine in my 17 footer.

For sure. That's excellent. Unfortunately a few people do not have that option either because they are too poor to afford any kind of motor vehicle much less a motor home, or they don't drive. These poor including myself are stuck where they are and are sitting ducks when things get so bad with inflation that they can no longer afford their one bedroom apartment. Not looking forward to that future at all.

If you have been a bachelor for any length of time, an RV isn't an big adjustment. I'm used to doing my laundry once a week at a laundry mat, and my 5th wheel is as nice as my condo was. ( I miss the fireplace and garage) and Im amazed at how quiet it is considering how close we are packed in. Covid-19 changed a few things, lots of kids with nothing to do (pool is closed) and the idea that I can be gone in a hours keeps me from feeling too stuck. My take is living in an RV is pretty much like living anywhere, apart from a few minor adjustments. None of them qualify as the 'dark side"

40 years ago when we had our first child and cloth diapers were the norm, we'd clean those dirty diapers by first putting them in a sealable 5 gallon bucket with bleach added to the water, then put it in the bed of the pickup while we drove. It worked really, really well!

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I kzbin.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

Like my Green Beret father who did Four tours in Vietnam once said, “If it’s got Teets, Tracks or Tires, pretty soon you’ll have problems with it.” I was in the Navy. Did two four year tours, all overseas. And when I came back, I wanted to see the country. So I became a truck driver. I once stopped at a truck stop in MS. It was called the 35/55 truck stop. Looked nice too! Stopped, took a shower, went to sleep, woke up at 6am to start my day. Went to put my shoes on and WOWSERS!! The bottom of my feet were on fire!!! I brought my foot up to look at the bottoms of my feet and there was (disgusting mental picture coming) blood and some sort of piss underneath the surface of the souls of both feet!! Like my skin was rotting off!! It was awful!! I got on my CB radio and called out for help. The radio lit up with all sorts of laughter and hollering. But through it all I heard one driver tell me to take it to Baskin Robins, which is channel 31. When we both got there he told me he saw something like that back in Vietnam. He called it Jungle Rot. He said the only thing that will kill it is to point the bottom of my feet at the sun and leave’em there. He said I’d get a bit of sunburn, but it’d save my feet. SAVE MY FEET?!! Ya, it’ll get so bad, infect the rest of your feet and eventually it’ll cause you to have you feet amputated. I asked him how I caught it. He said, “Did you take a shower at that place and not bleach the shower floor first?” Yep! That’s how I caught it! He left, I got on my phone and called my dummy (dispatcher for my driving company) and then just stuck my feet out of the driver’s window for about six or seven hours. I must have fallen asleep and it was about 5pm. I pulled in both feet and the skin was rock hard. The next day it was all peeling off and tender to the touch. I couldn’t drive for two more days. So a word to the wise: Do NOT take a shower at ANY place on the road without bleaching the shower “FIRST!!” To this day, I still have loss of feeling in both feet. **To the Vietnam Vet who saved my feet...Thank You sir.

Just stumbled across your channel today. Excellent video. Being handy with tools and able to fix minor issues while traveling is a huge plus. A lot of people go out and buy a new RV and expect it to be to problem free. WRONG. Stuff breaks, systems stop working, etc. You cannot rely on RV dealers to get you rig in for service when traveling... they always seem to be booked out for service weeks in advance. I totally agree on the "there's no such thing as a perfect RV". I Perfect example of this is the truck camper I own, which I've made a lot of videos about in my channel. It's not fun staying in it when the weather turns bad, because there's no place to comfortably sit for long periods of time.

It’s not simply a matter of people being bigoted. Most people living this nomadic life are very decent but it comes with some very unsavory types as well. Theft is or can be a big problem with transient living. Also, while the vast majority use proper sanitation, the occasional bonehead that poops on the ground (or worse, empties their holding tank illegally onto the ground) and leaves it uncovered makes for unseemly sights and smells. I did the “RV on the water” with a 37 foot sailboat for 2 years and sailed 2-3 days a week returning to an anchored spot in a protected bay. Out of 8 sailboats in that bay, mine was the only functioning sailboat-the rest of the sea nomads there never moved their boats which created an eyesore at times and lots of drugs and alcohol intoxicated live-aboards were noisy at all hours of the night, sometimes dumping their feces overboard brought marine patrol (cops) constantly harassing everyone because of the bad behaviors of a few. It was a wonderful time with beautiful sunsets and dolphins and the like, no worrying about insects or other critters, and very inexpensive to live. But the constant threat of bad weather, anchors coming unmoored at the most inopportune times, seagulls and pelicans and cormorants and herons emptying their bowels 30 feet above you as they perched on your mast, constant worry of thieves, keeping the bank of marine batteries charged, running generators to operate an AC unit necessitated the running of generators which were expensive to keep maintained in the salt air environment, and those frustrating navy showers became too much for me and I up and sold the boat 2 years ago. I could’ve endured all of that for much longer if not for the few vagrants that made us all look bad and brought unwanted attention and scornful looks from nearby land residents.

Regarding Quartzsite, I can only imagine... It doesn't surprise me in the least to hear you describe the cliques that form there. It's a small town that, for two months out of the year, is filled with 100k people converging upon the place. I've seen some TERRIBLE human behavior from people in Full Time RV groups on Facebook so it wouldn't surprise me in the least to hear that this gathering is chock full of d'bags and self-appointed primadonas as well. The more that technology and the internet move us forward, making it possible for people to connect with others online, the more and more desensitized many become to the feelings and needs of others. There are two KZbin channels that I use to be a subscriber of that I've since distanced myself from after seeing their truer natures expressed on video at Quartzsite. Safe travels you two... Good video.

If people are realistic , even with all the things you mentioned, it still seems like a great way to live! I remember when we lived in a 3 bedroom house in a beautiful neighborhood, still there was some shmuck in the neighborhood that was always calling the city for things like trash cans not quite in the right place or cars parked a day too long before being used etc , a lot of neighbors were really fed up with it and were looking for who it was. Also when I looked out my kitchen window, I could see the guy next door in his kitchen window. And as nice as he was. (Ane he was super nice!) I really wished I could see scenery instead and sunlight without seeing other people next door. There were other things also...And now that we have moved into an RV, I see beautiful green mountains and fields etc. I never want to go back. Simplifying our lives has really been a stress reliever! And helped with our bills. YaY!

Caught in a blizzard in Iowa. Pulled into a truck stop. The owner of the place was out in the weather, helping RVs and truckers to parking areas in safety. We stayed two nights until the road was cleared, for free. Back on the road, we counted over 200 truck wrecks and 500 auto wrecks when we departed. During a sudden wind storm in Virginia Beach, winds in excess of 90 mph, wrecked trucks, RVs and cars, throwing trees and other debris everywhere, as well as killing traffic control lights. we pulled off the highway and into a Walmart parking lot. The store GM was outside directing traffic into safe parking areas. He brought well over 200 high profile vehicles to safety. When you see the good, then the bad is not so bad after all.

Florida is full of state parks but you have to make reservations and that becomes a big pain . With some planning it's very doable but I'm from Tennessee . Tennessee doesn't make you reserve anything to go out and enjoy the lake or nature . Maybe in the state parks but I prefer actual nature to camp in . Also full-time in a skoolie with a dog is a hassle in itself . Great video 👍👏

Love this! Great Vlog! My first time viewing you guys, but really like the candid and reality based approach! Have been sailing and camping for most of my adult life, and can testify that, in both pursuits, the difference between an adventure and an ordeal is ATTITUDE! I often wondered about that. We would lake about every weekend in the summer down at the Arkansas Mountains in Oklahoma.. We had tents and picnic table awning, cooked on a camping stove went fishing tanned up and til I went back to school. Well on occasion a huge RV pulled in late ran that genirator sound, I couldn't wait to hear the crickets and bullfrogs again (my sleeping music )..So now I have a new perspective on those loud RV 's.. For whatever reason they were banned from the original reservation.. They didn't always come around but the lake authority always let them in. Thanks for a new look.

Wow, this is fantastic info!! Thanks very much, it’s always so helpful to hear from folks who have gone before you. Did you by any chance buy your vehicle in Europe or the UK? We’ve got all of our European friends checking on rules for buying vehicles in Germany and Austria as we are looking at vehicles there, also looking at some in the Netherlands and the UK and we have questions about logistics. There are just so many more choices in terms of EV’s in Europe and for more reasonable prices than the $400k rigs available in the states, so we prefer to buy over there, but know that will come with challenges.

I hitchhiked round Europe in the 70s and then owned campervans for nearly 30 years. The main difference now is that some towns don't welcome you as there are so many on the road now, on the other hand there are more places run by local authorities that are very cheap for a spot and basic facilities. There is a book of those but I forget its name. I only ever stayed in relatives driveways when in UK but I think it's much more expensive here than most of Europe.

Nice blog. I have used an ultrasonic pest repeller for 13 years now, and have never had any rodents in my homes, and now my home on wheels. Have also never owned a washer and dryer my whole adult life, so laundromats are a regular part of my life and no big deal to me. It is amusing to read the numerous negative comments here against RV life. Everyone is, of course, entitled to their own opinion. But for us full time RVers, it seems just as equally nutty to spend a significant portion of your money and life slaving away, working to pay off a mortgage on a house, that after your mortgage is paid off, will be at least 30 years old, likely in a location you chose mainly because it was in close proximity to your job, and in the end of it all when you are gone or no longer able to live at home, it will be a house that your kids and/or family likely will not want to keep, sell your things at an estate sale, and flip the house. Pfft... not for me. I love my home on wheels. If I don't like my neighborhood, I can pick up my house and move it. Whole setup cost me under $70K and will be paid off in less than 10 years. Just my opinion. Happy trails, all.

When mouse-proofing we always mixed steel wool especially the ones for stove cleaning with our insulation gap-filler (Great-stuff at Lowes, etc.) You might not be able to find very point of entrance. We were shocked about big mice were able to sneak through what we thought were pin-hole sized gaps. So you might still get a few surprise guests. We placed the extra large mouse sticky pads near warm areas (like water heater or furnace, etc.) We would mix D-con pellets with little natural peanut butter on the middle of the large sticky pad. Your 'sniffer' will tell you if there is one taking a "4ever nap" on the pad.

I don’t own an RV & don’t plan to buy one but I’m always trying to learn about travel life. And I learned some stuff here. My plan is tent camping 🏕 with a 4RUNNER. I have no interest in going to those commercial campgrounds. I’m trying to get away from people with my crabby Springer Spaniel. I’m a veteran bicycle camper & I’m used to the difficulties with laundry 🧺 & showering. 🚿 You couldn’t have said it any better-it’s not a perfect world 🌎. And if a thing can go wrong it will. If you can minimize catastrophes you’re doing really well. Don’t worry about what people say about you. Who cares? ‘All things are impermanent. Strive on with awareness.’ The Buddha 🕉☯️

Thanks. Glad you learned a few things. We had a crabby Springer as well, we loved him with all our hearts and knew his triggers, but in hindsight I feel like we lost 10 years of our life catering to his Springer rage. We love dogs and it’s really hard to say this. On our last trip to Baja we adopted a puppy and she is amazing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIqUm4V8nbepbKs

There are people that just are not meant to live the RV life, its the best life if you know how to do it, most people that jump into this are not mentally ready and still dependent on society's comforts, if you like living in a house or apartment or town home with your king bed and 50 inch TV just forget a nomadic life its not about fitting everything you have in your suburbia home into a rolling home you wont be happy, its about true minimalism and living for the road and next place to experience, its about camp fires and sitting outside your rig listening to the wild life and fishing and dipping into a mountain stream in the morning and being away from society not just joining society with another 1000 RV's.

I agree with the Quartzsite comment. I had a bad experience there. You might add number 11 reality as when you grab a site in an empty park and the very next rig that comes in has to camp next to you. I had that happen more than once.

What a great, honest and amusing clip. There are great, reasonably priced acreages for sale where building requirements are reasonable and the county is happy that you pay your taxes. Get one of those instead of burning a bunch of fuel every few days. Build yourself a little shop too, that way you can tinker for the rest of your life.
