Colussus The Forbin Project All time best, where evil wins. The movie acutally caused trouble for the studio. They had government officialss say, "No. Do not make movies like that anymore." @schoolfreak324 жыл бұрын
The Terminator franchise was always going to end with Judgement Day because of the time loop firmly established by the first movie: the fates of John Connor and Skynet are conjoined because one is incapable of coming into existence without the other. Without the Terminator, Kyle Reese never becomes John Connor's biological father; without John Connor, the Terminator's remains are never reverse-engineered by Cyberdyne into Skynet. An example of this stable time-loop is that (according to the iMDb page) Skynet only knew three things about John Connor's mother: her name (hence the other two women named "Sarah Connor" in the phone book who were killed), her hometown (the LA White Pages), and the two surgical pins in her legs (in the novelisation), prompting the Terminator to cut open the women's legs for a positive ID. Skynet didn't know the origins of the injury requiring the pins: Sarah Connor broke her leg during the final fight in the Cyberdyne factory, caused by the Terminator sent to kill her.

I assume that Revenge of the Sith doesn't make the list because it's not one of the top ten movies where evil wins? I think Infinity War doesn't make it because it's not really a Sci-Fi movie? I guess you could say that, since Brightburn focuses on the alien on Earth aspect of the story instead of the superhero vs super villain, that it could sneak into the sci-fi list.

I've read the book, which was divided into three parts: the first part ends when Alex is arrested, the second where his brainwashing is accidentally undone by his attempted suicide, and the third part where Alex basically grows out his sociopathic phase. In the edition I read, Burgess himself wonders if the third part is really necessary, so "evil wins" is a more-or-less canonical ending. As far as his surname "DeLarge", I think it is inspired by Alex's own narcissism comparing himself to Alexander the Great, and the movie needed an official family name since the book -- written entirely from Alex's POV -- didn't have one.

Not necessarily, since writers creating villains tend to have fun because the work's protagonist is by mandate always going to "win" in the end, resulting in said villains becoming three-dimensional characters while said heros are only two-dimensional (and the designated "love interest" only one-dimensional). Also, the "why" of someone going out of their way to do the wrong thing is interesting because the "why" of doing the right thing is kind of "Duh!".

Brazil is my second favorite movie and I have studied it for years. But the argument I have had with people over that time is that Sam actually did win. Yes, the government has killed his girlfriend and blown his mind, but his imagination saves him and gives him the illusion that he is living happily ever after with his dream girl. Sam’s friend/torturer Jack and Mr. Helpmann realize at the end that Sam has gotten away from them and retreated into his own mind where they cannot reach. His fate may be spending the rest of his days in asylum, or-more likely-simply getting a bullet to the back of the head for their troubles. But for the time being, Sam Lowery is in paradise and no one can take that away.
