Colussus The Forbin Project All time best, where evil wins. The movie acutally caused trouble for the studio. They had government officialss say, "No. Do not make movies like that anymore." Also, all your movies were subtle wins for the bad guy. Colussose was a masive kick in the nuts, that sent the audience's family jewels into orbit. It's a great movie for younger adults, because it the first movie were they get their little bubble burst.

@@Kikilang60 What I mean is, in reality computers do what they are programmed to do and have absolutely no clue whether what they do is good or bad (or evil). The good or evil comes from the programmer. I like the way Asimov puts it in his novels in that 'computers' (or robots) cause problems because we humans don't know what we want. Hence evil comes from ignorance.

The Terminator franchise was always going to end with Judgement Day because of the time loop firmly established by the first movie: the fates of John Connor and Skynet are conjoined because one is incapable of coming into existence without the other. Without the Terminator, Kyle Reese never becomes John Connor's biological father; without John Connor, the Terminator's remains are never reverse-engineered by Cyberdyne into Skynet. An example of this stable time-loop is that (according to the iMDb page) Skynet only knew three things about John Connor's mother: her name (hence the other two women named "Sarah Connor" in the phone book who were killed), her hometown (the LA White Pages), and the two surgical pins in her legs (in the novelisation), prompting the Terminator to cut open the women's legs for a positive ID. Skynet didn't know the origins of the injury requiring the pins: Sarah Connor broke her leg during the final fight in the Cyberdyne factory, caused by the Terminator sent to kill her.

I assume that Revenge of the Sith doesn't make the list because it's not one of the top ten movies where evil wins? I think Infinity War doesn't make it because it's not really a Sci-Fi movie? You could say that all superhero movies are sci-fi but it's really a fantasy. Of course that means that Brightburn the list? I guess you could say that, since Brightburn focuses on the alien on Earth aspect of the story instead of the superhero vs super villain, that it could sneak into the sci-fi list.

"In the book" Alex's last name isnt DeLarge. In addition, Kubrick based the book on the American release of a Clockwork Orange, which omitted the last chapter in which we see little Alex's redemption. That's why the movie ends the way it does.

I've read the book, which was divided into three parts: the first part ends when Alex is arrested, the second where his brainwashing is accidentally undone by his attempted suicide, and the third part where Alex basically grows out his sociopathic phase. In the edition I read, Burgess himself wonders if the third part is really necessary, so "evil wins" is a more-or-less canonical ending. As far as his surname "DeLarge", I think it is inspired by Alex's own narcissism comparing himself to Alexander the Great, and the movie needed an official family name since the book -- written entirely from Alex's POV -- didn't have one.

Not necessarily, since writers creating villains tend to have fun because the work's protagonist is by mandate always going to "win" in the end, resulting in said villains becoming three-dimensional characters while said heros are only two-dimensional (and the designated "love interest" only one-dimensional). Also, the "why" of someone going out of their way to do the wrong thing is interesting because the "why" of doing the right thing is kind of "Duh!".

Brazil is my second favorite movie and I have studied it for years. But the argument I have had with people over that time is that Sam actually did win. Yes, the government has killed his girlfriend and blown his mind, but his imagination saves him and gives him the illusion that he is living happily ever after with his dream girl. Sam’s friend/torturer Jack and Mr. Helpmann realize at the end that Sam has gotten away from them and retreated into his own mind where they cannot reach. His fate may be spending the rest of his days in asylum, or-more likely-simply getting a bullet to the back of the head for their troubles. But for the time being, Sam Lowery is in paradise and no one can take that away.

@@animetributes6996 not really, the Daughter remains trapped in the bunker working under the "programming" that Mother has instilled in her. The scene where Mother kills the Woman clearly implies that her "purpose" was to help keep the Daughter controlled. The song Baby Mine should be another indicator, it appears at the beginning and end of the film.

The movie Clockwork Orange is based upon the American version of the book which is the first printing of the book. Because the author was desperate for the book to be printed he agreed for the last chapter to be deleted. Without the last chapter, evil wins in the book. In later versions of the book printed in other countries, this last chapter is added in which has the good guy ending where the main character learns the error of his ways and helps society move forward.

In the 1980s sitcom Alf, the US government is shown multiple times looking for the alien that is hiding in the area, they mention the different ways in which they will torture him. In the show's last episode they manage to capture him.

A few these movies are definitely in this category and arguably are not as big or genre-specific, but the bad guys win.... - Fallen (1998, Denzel Washington, no sci-fi) - Upgrade (2018, Logan Marshall-Green) - I Am Mother (2019, Rose Byrne/ Hillary Swank) - Mother (2017, Jennifer Lawrence - no sci-fi) - Alien - Covenant (2017, Michael Fassbender) - Alien - Prometheus (2012, Michael Fassbender) - What Happened to Monday? (2017, Noomi Repace)

The more often I see 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I wonder if it would be a good thing for the aliens to take over. People are calmer, there is no more aggression which means the end of senseless conflicts, violence and wars.

Evilspeak (1981). Clint Howard plays a nerd in a military school that get bullied on a constant basis so through through the power of black magic and an Apple ][ he gets up to all sorts of diabolical fun.

A couple of more horror type ones for you. Splice - Adrian Brody doing bad Genetics..... very bad Genetics. Unsettling stuff. In the Mouth of Madness - Sam Neil, John Carpenter, cosmic horror in the Lovecraftian sense. Has a final scene that will stay with you

I didn't get the same feeling from the ending of the invasion of the body snatcher. My thoughts on it are that he sees her coming up and about to blow her cover and instead of risking his life he instead pretends to be a body snatcher by outing her. This also left the thought - how many humans are out there doing the same?
