Emmy winning screenwriter Phoebe Waller Bridge gives advice for writers in the interview about her screenwriting process and lessons from the screenplay on her tv series Fleabag, Killing Eve and Crashing. Waller-Bridge co-wrote the screenplay for No Time to Die (2021), the 25th James Bond film. She appeared on Graham Norton and Saturday Night Live - SNL with Donald Glover. She also won a Bafta and two Golden Globes.
0:00 - Intro
1:10 - Tip 01 - Disarm the audience with comedy and laughing; then punch them in the gut with drama.
1:52 - Tip 02 - Constantly challenge yourself to make your script UNPREDICTABLE and to SURPRISE the audience in a truthful way.
3:30 - Tip 03 - Material first, jokes first, character first. Structure always second. Put all your material on the wall and then structure the story from it.
5:58 - Tip 04 - RELATE DEEPLY to your characters and draw from your PERSONAL experience.
8:07 - Tip 05 - Write COMPLEX characters with MULTIPLE LAYERS that the actors will be eager to play.
10:14 - Tip 06 - If you have a character that is careless and unlikable on the outside - show their pain underneath and build in them a lot of HUMANITY to make them likeable.
11:58 - Tip 07 - Write RELATABLE characters with whom everybody can identify with.
12:47 - Tip 08 - If you’re an actor/actress write as if you're NOT AFRAID and write TRUTHFULLY like writing your DIARY. That way you’ll learn so much about the character.
14:13 - Tip 09 - If you wrote a tv pilot, try to attract quality production crew who will shoot it for cheap because they like your writing. After a well shot pilot, it’s much easier to get funding for the whole series.
15:36 - Tip 10 - Comedy and drama are intrinsically linked. The trick is to find the right balance between the two.
17:05 - Outro

as a screenwriter, it's nice to hear different screenwriters' approaches to writing. no two writers write the same - equals diversity and imagination

There is an old saying, "When you're a Scriptwriter, or a Filmmaker... etc. "You want to put your Shoe (stories feelings) so far into the audience chest, that they take your shoe with them when they leave the movie theater."

@@moviedetective303 honestly I couldn't have agreed more, just finished the third season of killing Eve, I can vouch at any given point of how drastically the quality in writing reduces In the season 2 if we go on comparing it with the 1st one and season 3 is absolutely intolerable. The story, the structure, the astounding slow pace of the plot makes it absolutely necessary for the audience to get heavily distracted from it.
