Octopus is a tough one for me. I know they are very intelligent, but they are also among the most sustainable seafood options out there. They are short lived, so they don't accumulate a lot of heavy metals and they have gazillions of babies, making them resistant to fishing pressure. Plus, they are really delicious.

I used to work in Cuidad Juarez. We went to a seafood place for lunch. They had what they call black bass that they served deep fried. The cut the flesh into diamonds. It is the best fish I have ever had and I have eaten all fish most of my life.

My old boss had a family vacation to Maine. While at the seaport, he was looking for some lobster, but they were all small. Finally he asked a local about the lobster. He was told that they don't really eat lobster. All the decent size lobsters get sent to big cities like Boston and NYC. We are just outside NYC.

I live on a small island off the coast by Jacksonville, FL. The only fresh seafood is mayport shrimp; everything else is shipped in frozen. On an island. In the Atlantic.

Go to Rhode Island. They are not shy or stingy. While in Maine last year we went to a famous seaport eatery and the clam chowder tasted like navy bean soup with rubber balls.

Love whole grilled fish: but then I live about 6 miles from my country's main fishing port, and the fish restaurants know how to cook it. Local mussels here are pretty good too, but my favourites are just over the channel in northern, and western France. Small and sweet, and wonderful served a la creme. Have to disgree with your chef; Mediterranean mussels may be big and plump, but the risk of dodgy ones is much higher.

Years ago I used to listen to a radio show when I was trying to wake up in the morning. The program host was trying to eat healthier, less beef, etc, so was eating a lot of swordfish for whatever reasons. Then she got sick, and was eventually diagnosed with mercury poisoning. It took most of a year plus for her health to get back close to what is was before she started eating so much swordfish.

Parmesan cheese on Italian dishes, including pastas with fish is good. Mexican cuisine often blends cheese and fish. But their cheeses blend well with fish. French, English, Dutch, and German cheeses don't work with fish.

There are a lot of Chinese supermarkets in my area that sell live tilapia. They are in the most disgusting tanks you’ve ever seen, swimming in months of accumulated $#!^. You can smell the fish tanks as soon as you walk into the store. The Shanghai wet market is a more sanitary environment. I’ve been there too.

Not surprised. I agree on swordfish, shark, tuna…. Octopus (I love eating octopus but on no eat list). Tilapia, I’m on the fence. Fish in restaurants is over cooked. Bingo… Trust of a restaurant, the same as trust of you butcher.

Sounds like more chef snobbery than anything else. Any protein can have issues of freshness and the manner it was raised .At a resturant, I expect their chef/buyer to get the best, freshest possible seafood and prepare it properly in a clean kitchen. I personally hate oysters but thats a personal choice. Am I going to jet off to Belguim or Spain to eat a specific highly chef rated seafood - of course not. Do I order local, in season seafood cooked in a way that I find delicious? Every chance I get.

It seems there is a smug goal of excluding everyone who isn't rich from eating any seafood. Snobbery is snobbery whether or not you disguise it in environmental concerns or not.

@philoctetes_wordsworth I was talking about the content of the video. They sound like 19th-century physicians screaming about fried foods. There is always an embittered group of elite (at least in their own minds) bullies demanding total control of what people eat. Nine times out of ten, they are proved wrong. And almost universally, they are proved to be too extreme. Now fish, traditionally counted a healthy food, is forbidden because angry snobs say so. Some of the vedio makes sense, swordfish is high in mercury, but most of it is just snobs demanding obedience. Well, Mr. Philo Ctetes, you can grovel and debase yourself. I have better things to do.

Most are comments from rich elitists. Only eat Mussels if they're foreign? Too good for American? Yes, they can have a different taste, that doesn't make them "better". I've lived in almost ALL the east and west coastal states. So just because these people are rich, those in the center of the country aren't supposed to eat seafood because it's not "fresh". Heck 90% or more of the "fresh" fish that is sold was flash frozen at sea. From Alaska, Japan, and the north Atlantic.

I am in houston, texas, and therefore almost never eat seafood. I was a snowbird, in Haines, Alaska in 1999, and was incredibly spoiled for all manner of seafood. I do not trust the seafood that comes out of the Gulf of Mexico, and I find crawdads and catfish disgusting. I hate the food here. i miss San Diego more than I can say. California has its own cuisine. texas has a lot of fried, overcooked, yukky food.👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
