How burglars can break into your home in just 10 seconds. A quick and easy home security tip to stop a home burglary and boost your home security.
The best way to stop this is to shorten the cord, not remove it, so that the release can still be pulled to release the door, but the cord is too short to pull through the door as demonstrated. if you do this, you want to remove any handle on the end of the cord that could be hooked and pulled as well. Alternatively, put a little hook screw on the end of a wooden dowel so that can be used to easily release the door if needed.

Another way to do this, without sacrificing the length of the rope, for cheap, is to get a small piece of PVC tubing. You can get it custom cut by the foot at Lowe's (maybe Home Depot, I forgot). Cost maybe a dollar or so. Something thick and rigid enough not to pull through the garage door. Then you untie the release cord, slip the tube around it, re-tie it, now it won't be pulled out.

Very interesting problem to solve. Hadn't considered that. That cord, though, is necessary as an emergency exit (e.g. fire). If their is a power blackout and there was a fire and this was the only way out, someone would be stuck if you removed the cord. I saw some suggestions in the comments about either putting a rigid conduit (e.g. PVC) around the cord or a rigid rod (e.g. coat hanger metal) to replace the cord. Problem solved.

Thanks for the information. I tried this on my garage doors and what I found was the emergency release on ALL of my garage doors of which I have 4 of two different manufacturers require that you pull the release cord AWAY from the garage door -- not TOWARD the garage door or down like you are showing. Additionally, if my neighbors saw a suspicious dude outside any of my garage doors poking wires into odd cracks, they would call the police and the suspicious dude would get a free ride downtown in a nice air conditioned patrol car !

I've installed a few garage door openers. A lot of those ropes come originally with a plastic handle that would be hard to fetch through the gap like you did. Lots of people remove them because it hits the roof of their vehicle. Btw the rope is intentionally made that long so it can be reached if you are standing next to a vehicle parked in the garage.
@LocksmithRecommended
@LocksmithRecommended 3 жыл бұрын
The plastic handle only makes it easier to fish out the rope. The handle acts like a stop so it's easier to grab the rope. The rope doesn't pull all the way through (due to the handle) but it pulls through enough to open. We recommend to our customers to either 1) get a dowel and put a hook screw in the end or 2) cut the rope just short enough that it won't be long enough to go through the gap in the garage.

Wild situations can arise w/garage door opener units that require urgent need to release that latch. So if u do remove rope: put 1 sturdy bare carabineer/spring clip thru the rope hole-leave it (or a round keychain metal clip. Next, attach the removed rope to a carabineer securely w/knot so u can quickly clip it to ur overhead carabineer on the unit pull arm. Add a rubber ball at the pull end to add to ease for most ppl to grip, pull & disengage door. Garage doors have shut onto cars when they back out/in- causing opener to seize. In home fires- if power goes out, hard to see, garage may A) be only way out or B) shutting garage door quickly will slow fire spread/access to oxygen, giving you more time for rescue to all, etc. Keeping the rope-pull-clip always in 1 spot hung on the wall at ur daily entry will add security should a freak accident u can't see coming, hit😮

Hypothetical suggestion (for a double-wide door opener) - what if you swapped the rope (that is likely tied thru an eyelet on the bracket) out for a dowel/rod that hangs instead (or fashioned it so that the bulk of what is hanging down is just dowel)? That way thieves would not be able to maneuver it with a hanger, and the emergency release is still accessible in case of an emergency?

Anything that prevents it from being pulled through. I'm tall so I just cut my cord short enough to not be pulled through and I can still easily reach it. Some of our customers prefer a wooden dowel with a hook as the end set aside. Your way would work too if the car doesn't hit it. 👍

CHECK YOUR RELEASE ARM TO SEE IF IT IS AS EASY TO PULL DOWN WITH A HANGER AS MINE. I first heard about this issue around 6 months ago and remember thinking incredulously "I'm over 60 and I'm just hearing about this ridiculously easy way to foil my locks?" But then do I actually go do it? No. Not even after I posted it on Nextdoor a month later and not even after my wife reminded several times (ADD/AGE sucks). So I see this video and I think to myself "Idiot!" and I immediately go untie the ropes While untying the second rope, I "barely" leaned my hand against the release arm the rope is attached to and voila, unlatched. I'm like "What the..." So then I had to thread a wire through the holes in both the release arm and the trolley together. Btw, I first heard about this 6 months ago from my friend. His alarm system kept indicating an issue with the garage, but he couldn't figure out what. After a couple days, he finally went out and opened and closed the garage door again and then examined the doors to see if they were an issue. And then he saw it. From the front, it was a barely noticeable bow in the top of the center garage door panel that you would not normally see. But when he looked up while examining the door, there was a 1" gap in the center and bow was obvious. Apparently they were frustrated trying to get the rope that was not there. Thankfully, someone shared this with him before he hit 60. His $20k UTV is still safe and snug. Now he also has security cameras to go with his new $30k UTV. PS: If you are going to get security cameras, get (AND USE) 4k. Anything less is near worthless in identifying people and even cars sometimes depending on distance. At night, anything less IS worthless.

They do that in San Francisco all the time. I am fortunate to live in a cul de sac at the top of the hill. All the neighbors know each other and we can see cars coming up the hill. Only one road in and out so if we know a house is being robbed we can block the only exit with a car. Every home owner here has a gun or two and we all have each others numbers. Most of us work from home as well and have dogs. I zip tied the cord to the release and you have to either pull very hard to snap it or cut it off to open the door. I also have an electronic bolt on the garage door and alarm sensors on the door. We have cameras all along the outer perimeter along with motion lights. The dogs will bark if anybody approaches then Smith and Wesson come out to play!

Or they just walk over to one of the two windows and break the glass. Worst thing was the old lock that people had on the side frame of the door that used a key rather than remote keypad to open the door. They were held in with 2 1/2 inch nails. Pry them out and use a nail to short out the 2 wires. When on vacation, assuming you have access to the garage through the house, always pull the garage door opener power plug. No amount of fighting will let a thief get in. Just something to think about. If you leave the car in the driveway unlocked with either a remote or programmed buttons to open your garage, the thief has access to your garage while you are sleeping and can work on the house to garage entryway using your own tools. All things to consider..

Cut the rope short enough so it cannot reach that crack and if there is a knob on the end of it, remove it so it can't be grabbed by a hook. That should still leave you enough rope so it can easily be reached while standing in the garage.

As someone who runs his own garage door installation company and has been in the business for over 15 years PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE! The release handle is very important for emergencies. Most people also park their car inside the garage so without it you’d have to climb on your car to disengage the opener?? What if it’s an emergency? Most of these ropes have a handle on the end of it which does allow a would-be thief to get a hook onto it easier but also prevents it from being pulled through a small hole on a door. And as someone who is in the industry, we have clients who for one reason or another get locked out of their garage door and we have to fish the release handle and I assure you it is not nearly as easy as he makes it out to be to get the handle with enough leverage to disengage it. It oftentimes takes 10-15 minutes at the very least during which someone out to notice someone trying to break in or at the very least make the would-be thief second guess this option. There are plenty of easier ways to break into a house than this. Please do not cut your manual emergency release cords.

Bad advice, if you have an emergency and opener is not working for any reason, someone could die. Such as in fire or needing to get to doctor. Best thing to do is get a new LiftMaster with an accessory lock that bolts onto track and comes unlocked automatically when opener is activated, or it can also be manually unlocked.

If you read the comments below, you'll see that we recommend leaving it on but cutting it short enough not to be able to pull out through the garage door. Or installing a hook in the middle of a dowel that you can reach up and pull it down. This allows for easy disengagement in both cases.

Other videos show them hooking onto the latch itself, not the rope. The key to securing that latch is to use 1 or 2 zip ties (depending on their thickness). Afterwards you can still use the latch by giving the rope a sharp tug to break the zip ties from the inside. My rope is too short to pull through to the outside and it has a T handle as well.

Possibly, but those handles can also make it worse. When a handle is there, they don't need to pull the cable through the gap. They just need to slide the hander down to the handle and give a tug.

Hello from the Loma Linda neighborhood near 28th St & Thomas... Great video, evoking a "Who knew?" in my experience with these things. I'll keep that in mind if I ever get an opener like that. But WTH do you do in an emergency for which that rope is specifically purposed, as dumb as it is, is removed?? I can't fathom why you let that slide. How about replacing it with a light weight chain with links too big to drag through that gap? If needed, a knee-high sock or other kind of sleeve to prevent damaging the vehicle. Cheers.

Great point! Just cut the cord so that it is short enough so it's can't be fished through but you can still pull it. Mine is about 12 inches long. Another solution, get a small wooden dowel and screw a hook into the end. If you need to release, just grab it with the hook at the end of the dowel. Thanks for your feedback.

I cut the rope just now and removed the plastic handle that would be easy to hook by a hanger... Then I shortened the rope and tied a new knot.

I don't see the connection. Having a impenetrable front door lock doesn't stop this break-in technique. But in total agreement that better locks could and should be used on entry doors.

I have to disagree with the wisdom of this. A family member had an old water heater ignite and back draft, he was not able to get out of the overhead door and died. There are other ways to keep people from pulling the cord out , like a large toggle handle of water ski tow.

most have a handle on the rope that will not come through the door . this guy took the handle that looks the same as a lawn mower pull start cord off before he did this. but if you inly take the cord off it will not stop a theft from getting in the same way. if you look there is a place where the cord hoes in all you would have to do is use the clothes hanger and feel till you hooked the place where the cord goes hive it a jerk and your in . this video does nothing but shows people who didn't already knw it how to easily get in the your garage. but since most lock the inside door to their home they still have to break your door to get in the house . nest thing to do is buy a cheap security camera system off ebay for a little over 100 bucks that sends a alert to your cell phone that is motion activated. once you get the alert you can view the inside of your home and all cameras on your pgobe and call the cops or if your close by your home drive back and shoot the mfer before he gets out of your home like we here in the south do .

If u say cut Make emergency release her a bath no you do not want to do that because that is there in case of an emergency like the garage door guy hit by some thing or the power is out or something bad and you need that emergency release if you want to prevent the coat hanger you want to buy a product called garage door shield or put some thing on the garage door closes it latches on the top panel so you can’t stick something between the panel and the frame never zip tie the emergency release rope and never cut off the emergency release

Just cut the cord short enough so that it won't reach the garage door when the garage door is closed. Or put a hook in the end of a wooden dowel so if you need the release, you can just use the hook to pull it down.

You are teaching people to disable a safety device. It is not there to let you manually open the door, but to release a door that may be pinning a person or pet when closing. There are safer methods to combat this attack that leave the cord intact. Yes, there are photo eyes and pressure sensors in the door to reverse when contacting an object, but all it takes is for that pressure sensor to be set incorrectly. (Check your owners manual, if it doesnt refer you to a door tech, it will have calibration instructions, or at the very least, a method to test such as with a 2x4.)

@@LocksmithRecommended put a hook shape in that coat hanger and skip the cord and go for the latch. Also, does the red handle on your pull cord rest at 6 feet from the floor when the door is closed? If not, you're setting yourself up for trouble. Give people a legit way to block this attack while not suggesting they disable a safety device. (There are "shield" type devices you can buy, but just look at one and build it yourself out of materials you have at home.) § 1211.9 Additional entrapment protection requirements. (a) A means to manually detach the door operator from the door shall be supplied. The gripping surface (handle) shall be colored red and shall be easily distinguishable from the rest of the operator. It shall be capable of being adjusted to a height of 6 feet (1.8 m) above the garage floor when the operator is installed according to the instructions specified in § 1211.16(a)(2). The means shall be constructed so that a hand firmly gripping it and applying a maximum of 50 pounds (223 N) of force shall detach the operator with the door obstructed in the down position.

If it can get hooked, it can pop open. I'd recommend cutting it short enough so it doesn't reach the garage door. That will leave it long enough so it can easily be pulled open. If there is a plastic pull piece on the bottom of the cord, remove it. That can be hooked as well.
