Being a highly sensitive person (HSP) adds a layer of difficulty to anything and everything, including dating. It’s tricky enough to navigate an overstimulating world, but adding another person to the mix? If this feels overwhelming, you’re not alone! It’s complicated, but it can certainly be done--and when it is, it can feel oh-so-rewarding. Hopefully, some of these ideas resonate with you and inspire your next conversation.

Agreed. I'm trying to stop expressing how I feel to my grandma, because I noticed that pretty much every time I do, her default response is "get over it". And now I find myself saying the same thing whenever I read a comment or article where someone is expressing *their* feelings, and I don't like that about myself. 😟

Yes; I feel that starting a new relationship where someone chooses to help me with my trauma & makes me feel worth it will take a great deal of getting used to. There will likely be much crying involved, but as long as I communicate that it's bc they're being kinder or sweeter than I've ever received, I doubt they'll take it (super) weirdly. After all, the reaction is to genuine care & engagement, I'd hope the same would be maintained.

Yeah. One time I was feeling a lot of anxiety due to a social setting, and my gf stopped what she was doing and comforted me until I was ready. She even helped me into the conversation and setting and told me she was proud of me. I only said about 4 words and a chukle. That made me cry, and she asked why. It only made me cry more. As HSP myself, I strongly suggest every highly sensitive person to talk with therapist. HSP in our world is a true struggle, sensory overload and most important - people overload, and by that I mean, seeing how cruel world is, how crazy patterns people are living with, how most people are selfish, egocentric, arogant and there is plague of narcissists, no matter how well you are educated, it is impossible to maintain good psychic health in such world.

When I told my therapists that I have always been extremely sensitive and feel like I may be an HSP, they never engaged on that topic. Because of my depression, I believe that they discarded this possibility (as in: "it's just caused by the depression"), instead of considering it as a co-factor for the development of my depression. These videos make me feel a little more seen. EDIT: Just to make it clear: my therapists so far have otherwise been amazing and helped me a lot. It's just that when it comes to HSP, they seemingly try to avoid the topic somehow - at least that's how it felt to me!

An emoji can really help or hurt - like if someone's trying to keep a surprise, at least it's not contextless. And if we trust someone, we anticipate a 🤭 or 😏 or 😝 or 😜 or 🙈 or *any happy-looking emoji* likely isn't a bad thing. So it's worth mentioning to ppl - if it's a nice surprise, use a nice emoji; if you've got bad news, perhaps steer clear of phrasing that may trigger *catastrophic thinking*. It's stressful. 😅

@@JustNicole6400 You're not alone. I know I suffer from anxiety issues and I suspect I'm a HSP as well, and more times than not the HSP aspects drive my anxiety, which my suspected HSP traits will turn into hyper-vigilance which just spells for disaster. Every small signal is interpreted as devastating and removing myself makes me paranoid that they're judging me for needing a break. For anyone worrying, I've found very effective ways of coping with it and doing what most HSPs probably have a hard time with; I'm not afraid to anger someone if it's called for. But that's very specific for the environment and circumstances I find myself in.

Being an HSP and a heterosexual guy is quite difficult. The vulnerability of being sensitive can be alluringly feminine, but I feel like it just makes me weak. Also I can't face dating anymore, so the loneliness is pretty extreme. (Sorry for bad English and a long comment) Being a HSP I am convinced that I’m “wrong, dramatic, broken, insane, and too sensitive” by my partner. I was told that’s it’s really hard to be in a relationships with a person like me, but I don’t know how to became and act “normal”. It makes me feel like I didn’t deserve to be loved. In my country it’s really hard to get a professional therapist help, because apparently “Depression and other mental health issues are not real here” But for everyone who feels the same as I do, I’m gonna be this one person who is going to tell you that you are not broken or too sensitive or too much. You are you, and your feelings are valid.

Remember, always make your partner feel comfortable and happy, however, never forget about your own happiness. If being with an HSP is too much for you, there is nothing wrong with it either, and don't let people tell you that you are being "a jerk", "immature" or "a bad person" for not being able to carry all the compromises an HSP, or any kind of person demands. Both of you must feel comfortable and happy with each other, being both able to provide what the other needs to feel loved and appreciated.

Lately, this channel has been giving me the videos I need in the moment. Whether to give me something to laugh or think about, or to bring clarity when I need it. Today, it's sort of helping me learn more about myself. Well, that and the person I like might be an HSP too, so doesn't hurt to watch things like this myself 😅

this whole video made me feel so happy cause i felt appreciated and even realized theres probably a few things here i should mention to my gf im super sensitive to criticism and sometimes if i start to get upset over a thing i can't really control she'll mention how much my breakdowns upset her rather than comfort me it's usually "i hate when you do this" or some sort of scolding about how i should act. i know she's trying to help but she always goes about it the wrong way, and sometimes i cant stop feeling as if im a burden to her. earlier when she did this though she realized it hurt me and she comforted me, and she helped me remember how important i am to her and everyone else. im so glad i have her.. even if she's all the way across the country from me i'll never give up on loving her.. sorry to whatever poor souls read my rambling nonsense, its 5 am and my brain still wont shut up, also typing on a keyboard gets really fun after the first minute or so

"I want to talk to you" has always set my anxiety soaring because it was always the prelude of a confrontation. 1 person, after I asked what it was about, even had the audacity to say, "I don't want to talk about it right now," which (needless to say) only further aggravated my uneasy feeling. If I had to do that all over again, I would have walked out her door! I put up with an abusive so-called friendship far longer than I should have, and it didn't end until I had moved away and wouldn't cater to her gossip over the phone. When I couldn't be at her beck and call anymore, she was finished with me, and it was just as well. I have friends where I live now, who treat me so much better!

Hey! HSP here.. I have a little story or maybe two. So before we were able to just get lunch during school, we'd have to wait at the lunch table until everyone was quiet enough. Now I already hate cafeterias... but what would make it even worse is when the principle would go on the stage and would be yelling to get us to be quiet.... BUT WITH A FREEKING MIC. So this already loud lady, is screaming into a mic and since kids are idiots they're still talking so she keeps going and I'm over here dying. But that's just one. So the other one was when me and my mother were playing a scary game and she would always be screaming. Since she's right next to me I literally had to get earplugs and headphones because she is a very loud person. Anyway try not to hide anything from us, we'll notice.

But over time people starting to say stuff like “stop babying her.” Which apparently is the opposite of what you’re supposed to do. It's such a relief to know that I'm not alone! I'm too nervous to even try courtship, I'm a nervous wreck in the first place so bringing somebody else into the mix is quite an adjustment. I totally relate to your advice on phrased like "too sensitive"; when somebody delivers such an assessment of something about yourself that you can't help, it hurts. I'm not doing it on purpose. I don't enjoy feeling my breath constricted with sudden changes/adjustments, I don't enjoy feeling overstimulated by news and media. I don't enjoy second-guessing myself and wondering what I did wrong even when I didn't do anything wrong. I don't enjoy apologizing for myself. It's exhausting!

So this comment is about to be a long one. I'm HSP, and I'm currently in a poly relationship where both my partners are pretty good about how they talk and interact with me. I have had the realization because of them and being in a healthy environment that my last major relationship was pretty bad. And watching this just confirmed alot. This has given me a little bit more comfort in my action of cutting this person out as a friend. At least for now, because i know how unhealthy it is for me to be with someone who, let alone can't communicate or deal with his own emotions and thoughts, but mine. I'm alot, but that doesn't mean I'm not worth the effort. I do hope and send him love and light when I think of him because when you love someone, you want what's best for them and yourself. Even if that means leaving.

A few years ago... I was dating (nothing especially serious... but fun) an HSP... She SOOOoooo wanted to learn to ride motorcycles, but she was kinda terrified... SO I talked to buddies and dug out an old Rebel 250... and started just doubles with her. She was brave, and at first there were a few tears, but she never wanted to stop... Chili dogs at the fair... Hitting the flea market just to get out of the house... dinners and movies, to ride a few more miles together... AND then I got us enrolled in MSF together (when I managed to trade into a rebuildable Rebel 250... just a second bike. We still weren't too serious... BUT I can't help taking a willing and WANTING rider under my wing... whether or not it's a girl or interested in me... We passed, though I PURPOSEFULLY took the shabbier of the Rebel's... and scored a few points lower than she did on the course... It was okay. My ego could handle it, so long as I passed... THEN I had the paperwork in order... I was going to make a relatively GRAND gesture... AND I presented her with a set of keys (to the tank, helmet lock, and ignition)... I'd scraped together and saved and polished coin until I could get one of the bikes completely returned to factory "Cherry" condition, between the two... The other was (sort of) whatever was left over plus what it took to get "road-worthy" again... I spent TWO WEEKS learning and practicing how to ride that motorcycle from the passenger (rear/pillion) seat. I didn't want her to be in any danger or to overstress her... I just wanted the skills to be able to save us both "just in case"... SO I could give her all the control she could handle and all the safety I could possibly manage. I'd rather be hated alive than loved and dead... that's all... The look in her eyes was priceless when she answered the door, and there was a bright red ribbon, neatly tied into a bow on the keyring I tossed her, and I said, "Get your gear." "Where are we going?" She wanted to know as she caught the keys. "Where do YOU want to go?" I responded. "You're the one in charge. It's YOUR bike." I smiled. "Let's go to Charlie's for a dog!" She squealed, tears practically flooding into her eyes. "Let me get my gear." You know... It was midnight BEFORE we got anywhere near Charlie's for a dog... BUT that was possibly the BEST chili dog ever served on the back of a 250 Honda Rebel... OH you can surprise an HSP... It takes a LOT of very VERY careful planning, and you are VERY well advised to plan and surprise her (him?) on things that are completely harmless and totally "up his/her alley"... Do it right, or don't bother trying to do the son of a bitch at all... Maybe that's the secret about HSP's...Jokes and mischief should be very VERY small... Read or pay attention VERY VERY VERY well, and then deliver what's for the BEST. ;o)
