Before my incident, I had studied police action shootings and had already kind of learned about the mental and physical reactions that cops typically experience in a shooting... and knowing beforehand what my body would experience DEFINITELY HELPED me mentally in my incident. It really helped because as I experienced those things, I knew that it was a natural reaction my body and mind was having to the incident. However, what REALLY surprised me was HOW LONG those physical and mental reactions lasted. For instance, I didn't expect for my heart rate and blood pressure to remain elevated for hours after the shooting was over with.

Not a shooting but real close. I remember everything as a series of rapid slides not as a video. just flashes of pictures. Weird! Glad you spoke of it being normal. Thank you.
@EthicalPreparedness5 ай бұрын
That's interesting that you remember more of 'rapid slides' and not video. I remember it like video, but only certain segments: his gun pointing at me, then the next thing I remember is watching the sights to my gun cycling, then opening my squad car's trunk to deploy my rifle, then us approaching the bad guy as he fell to the sidewalk, etc. All the stuff inbetween those incidents are just BLANK. I don't remember them at all.

Although I have not been involved in a self-defense shooting, I have been in two different situations where I thought I might have to defend myself with my pistol. I didn't have bad dreams, I wasn't hysterical, but I did avoid those two locations for at least a year.

You are the only one who has delved into this aspect of self- defense shooting. This video showed the human side of officers that most of us don’t think about. Good stuff! Thanks!

When I was in the police academy (over 20 years ago) we had a special classroom session where seasoned officers came in and spoke to us about their police action shootings. It was an eye opener, because it's a nightmare when you get involved in one. It's not a 'legal nightmare', but a physical and mental nightmare on the person. It's the best and also day of your life. It's the best day of your life, because you almost died, but survived. But then it's still the worst day of your life at the same time.

I almost texted you today just to check in to see how you are doing. But I was mowing my field and got busy. BTW: Those yarrow plants all ended up being White Yarrow. So, major good score! Plus: now I have plenty of that White Yarrow anti-bleeding natural medicine now. :)
@PraxisPrepper5 ай бұрын
@@EthicalPreparedness That's the up side of bad things happening, we get that chance to improve for next time. Yarrow water would have been good at the time for River's head. For myself, I was gravity dropping water to flush that cut. It worked okay, but when I got back, I procured a syringe for wound flushing and added it to my kit for next time. That's great about your yarrow. Nice plant. Have you tried yarrow teat yet? As I understand it, it's a bit medicinal, so you don't want to over-drink it, but (as these things go) it's IMO one of the better tasting teas from wild edibles.

It happens with other stressful, traumatic events as well. Early in my nursing career I had a medication error which caused the patient a lot of distress but thankfully no lasting harm. 30 years later I still relive the incident occasionally.

There can be drama like this that causes a person to have the same symptoms, such as emergencies that involve family or friends. All that was said here can effect you and maybe your a EMT or Firefighter and all Hell breaks loose. Your the 1st Responders that are in action like a Navy or Army Medics in combat.

I do not have the experience that you do but I would think that the "impending feeling of doom" is not always a prerequisite to a justified lethal force scenario and so using that as a "sign" may not be the best advice 100% of the time... although I defiantly get your point. This could especially be true if you are saving someone elses life. Everything else sounds spot on with what other training resources say. Great advice. Also as a ex-LEO, do you believe most detectives will be willing to give citizens the same leeway as LEOs usually get in regards to them letting you wait a few days to give an official statement... without detaining you the whole time at least?
@EthicalPreparedness5 ай бұрын
Reference to will a detective give the same leeway to a self-defender that they would give a cop: I really think that depends on the state that you live in, the circumstances of the self-defense shooting, and how big of a dirtbag that the dead bad guy. For example: In my conservative state, most cops are very pro 2nd Amendment, and they liked it when a bad guy was shot by a good guy in self-defense. However, I would not want to be a self-defender in someplace like New Jersey! Also: if a self-defense shooting happens in a regular public place and the dead bad guy was a real dirtbag: the cops would probably pat the self-defender on the back and say: "Good job. We've arrested that bad guy dozens of times, but the courts kept turning him back loose on the streets." However, if a self-defense shooting happens in a bar parking lot or there's alcohol involved.... and if the self-defender and the dead bad guy knew each other.... then there would probably be more scrutiny on the self-defender's actions. However, that's what I see in the conservative state that I live in. Somebody that lives in New York, or New Jersey, or California would probably have a different experience. :)

As a survivor of a home break in attempt when the door came off it's hinges I can attest to not remembering much as I physically held the door closed unarmed. But remember yelling that he better leave or else he's gonna die. The neighbor yelled that he called the cops and the dude left. We found a box cutter on the stairs a few minutes later before the cop's showed up. That should be an example of what not to do. You should be armed as you still hold the door closed! Self defense is a last resort, not the first option.

@@EthicalPreparedness that was my wakeup call to get armed and be ready. All these others said what they would have done in that situation however they have never once been in any real situation? I know that feeling. I used to hang off of skyscrapers to work on their signs and that time when you go over the wall and hang by the rope, your body says we are gonna die. Your hands don't want to let go of the rope so you can work. Survival instincts.

Totally agree on perception. When I was a Teenager in a safe and clean suburban neightborhood and I was collecting for my paper route. Went to a house collecting and rang the bell and this person answered the door and pulled a pew on me and I'll never forget the feeling or look of what was perceived as a bazooka!

Its good to hear this perspective, but I have been in a life or death situation or 2 before and I can say that in the moment fear does not exist, I cant describe it but everything becomes binary and I do mean everything, the difference between life and death is everything.

The police know all this, and still push you to answer complicated incriminating questions immediately after the incident.
@EthicalPreparedness5 ай бұрын
They even push other cops that have been involved in police action shootings to answer those complicated questions immediately after the incident. We're trained that when the investigator shows up to only say: "He did (insert violent act here), I defended myself. And I don't want to answer any more questions until I speak with my FOP attorney."

Remaining silent seems to be the best advice, although recently Mike Glover said that he followed that advice and in retaliation for that got put through an incarceration nightmare. I read in an old Book that someday the real “Justice Department” will come.
