Despite it's small size for a power program Martin Stadium at Wazzu has a great atmosphere. They do sell it out, and the "building" past the endzone isn't just a random building... It's the football operations building. That whole end of the stadium is now where they have new locker rooms, a state-of-the-art strength & conditioning complex, offices, recruiting room, tunnels to the field, and a new seating section plus there's a parking garage underneath. And the practice fields are on the other side of it, you can look out into the stadium or the practice fields from the building and it does a good job of closing that end of the stadium. There's always a wall of students and a great crowd at Martin that makes a lot of noise! And it's got a good newer press box/club seating area and nice video boards. It's a great place to watch a game, just waiting for alcohol sales inside still... WSU also just broke ground on a new indoor practice facility.

First, Go Knights, second, I disagree. I grew up going to Jordan-Hare(Auburn) on Saturdays. A UCF fan can not even comprehend the feeling of 80k+ making it deafening. Go to the Swamp coming up this year(I hope it's at capacity. I've been where it was quieter than UCF). Those stadiums win games that they should have no business winning. Don't get me wrong, an empty large stadium is definitely depressing and hurts more than helps. I think UCF could handle 50k if the expansion was for ticket holders. We're not there yet to support a huge stadium like I want.

There are very good reasons for the small capacity of Martin Stadium. It is a 6 hour drive from Seattle which includes crossing a mountain range, a semi-desert and hundreds of miles of two lane highway. This goes a long way in explaining their high TV viewership numbers. The stadium is similar to Nippert in being surrounded by the campus. The football operations building behind the west endzone is a one of a kind building that is a huge recruiting tool.

Stadiums at Colleges in PRO TOWNS don't need to be so big. Like you mention sometimes the opponent SUCKS and you cannot sell out a larger Stadium. But IN A PRO TOWN when you have a MARQUEE GAME you can MOVE THE GAME to the PRO STADIUM. I know Cincinnati has Hosted games where the Bengals play. They did it against Oklahoma and Louisville. Georgia Tech just played Louisville at the Falcons Stadium for a Home Conference Game. When a HUGE Program like that is coming to town with SEVERAL FANS who TRAVEL you do that sort of thing to MAKE THE MONEY and you don;t LOSE MONEY when you play in your TINY Stadiums. Boston College, Houston, and TCU could always play a Home Game where the Patriots, Texans or Cowboys play IF they KNEW they had an upcoming game that was going to draw a HUGE CROWD. Vanderbilt could move a game to where the Titans play and there is a HUGE Stadium in Orlando that Hosts Early Season Games and Bowls that UCF could surely use for a HUGE GAME during the season. If I was running 1 of those programs I wouldn't build a Bigger Stadium or Expand Seating very much (some maybe). I would focus on AMENITIES and making my smaller stadium REALLY COOL and a great experience for my SMALL FANBASE. I would be more about AESTHETiCS and BEAUTY and being LOUD with a SMALL FANBASE. And I would maintain a great relationship with the NFL Team/Stadium in town and try to schedule 1 or 2 games a year that would be worth renting their Stadium for. Like a WEEK 1 game every year against a Power House team from another Conference that has a ton of fans that Travel. Then a Thursday or Friday Night Game against my Biggest Rival IN CONFERENCE.sometime during Week 5, 6 or 7. Or maybe it would just be a BIG GAME for the Conference game. Then I would still have the SMALL STADIUM for the FCS Team we are going to play and the Group of 5 team we are going to play. You play the Worst team in your Conference there and the team whose Fans Travel the Least. You still have a great SMALL STADIUM for all of those types of games. But you also get the BIG STADIUM for the Marquee Games.
@jamesmahan9787 Жыл бұрын
No, just no. If you have a big game, that's what the sellouts are for at the small stadium, have an environment that would help your team and force the other team into uncomfortable situations. I'd much rather have big games played at nippert than at paul brown/paycor.
@MercerKnowsBall Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmahan9787 You cannot GET the Big Games in the SMALL STADIUM against the BIG SCHOOLS unless you can get into their Conference. When was the last time Cincinnati played Oklahoma BEFORE they got into the Big 12? Where was that game played? Not Nippert.

BC "looks tiny" because unlike most CFB stadiums, there's no open end zone and there's upper decks on all four sides, so there's no real walls of seats that make the stadium look huge. The great thing about Alumni is that the seats are right on top of the field. The sidelines are the absolute NCAA bare minimum and when a big crowd is on hand, it can be a tough place to play.
@Dld198510 ай бұрын
Houston built the stadium with expansion in mind. Now that they are in the Power five and will be playing other schools in Texas the crowds will grow due to teams like Baylor , Texas Tech , Oklahoma State and TCU will travel to games in Houston. The stadium was built so it can easily expand to 60,000. I look to see it expand now that crowds will pick up.

Ironic, you say he hasn't done any research, while your entire statement is completely inaccurate. There is no big plan to have Reser above 55,000, the stadium is considered done and there are no more renovations planned. If you think I'm wrong, you are free to e-mail the school's athletic department as I have to get an answer. The source that is cited on Wikipedia is from 2005, nearly 20 years old, and is 100% outdated and wrong. It has been years since Reser had a game sell above 40k tickets. The largest crowd that Jonathan Smith has seen at home was 39,776 against Oregon in 2018. The 55k plans, which were entirely tentative and not set in stone, were scrapped and the stadium was downsized accordingly. While I disagree with this guy's take about it "being obvious why they were left behind", and his mispronouncing of Reser as "Riser" stadium is extremely cringe, he otherwise wasn't wrong about what he said about capacity and renovations.

Some many things wrong I don't know where to begin. it's R-ee-ser, not Riser. WSU's Martin Stadium is way better than you give it credit. The size is appropriate for a city with a population of 30k and 75 miles from Spokane and 300 miles form Seattle. The most remote Power5 stadium in the country. Cincinnati's stadium is constrained by the campus. Give Houston credit for building a stadium and not relying on an NFL stadium.

Houston put most of their money in their Indoor Practice Facility, their IPF is gorgeous. I don't know why you say things like "there's nothing to it" about stadiums. Ex: Duke, Wallace Wade has a lot more chairbacks than many other stadiums, and the blue seats look really good. The brick work on the club & suite side looks really cool. I have been there in person and have done videos on these stadiums. Oregon State's stadium is pronounced "REE-ser" stadium, not Ri-ser. Washington State has a Football Operations building in the one end zone, the idea is you can look into the stadium from the coaches' offices, and look at the practice fields on the other side of the football ops building. Please stop saying 'there's nothing to it" about stadiums. The club and suite side of Wake Forest's stadium looks great IN PERSON. The problem Wake Forest has if they wanted to expand on the other side, there's all of these tennis facilities that are on that side. They would have to move the Tennis facilities in order to expand the football stadium.

Also funny to think about it when the University of Alberta Golden Bears here in Edmonton play at Foote Field which sits a measly 3,500 and I highly doubt (been decades since I actually went to a game) it's ever even close to full. Hockey is definitely more popular than football here but even the UofA hockey rink Clare Drake only sits 3,000 and attendance is usually around 2,000 (I go pretty frequently) ... college sports just isn't the same here in Canada and it's a shame, one day I want to go a college football game in the states with a bumping 110,000 fans, I bet it's a hell of a time
