Francois Steyns long range kicking performance in the 2009 Tri Nations test match in Hamilton was the greatest I have ever seen from a goal kicker. 3 penalty goals from inside the Boks own half in NZ is something foreign world cup winning goal kicking heros like Jonny Wilkinson & Matt Burke could not achieve against the All Blacks in their own backyard

The 2008 highlights here had me stressed again just like I was in 2008. The one consistent thing that I noticed and is still happening today , and was also mentioned by Hugh Bladen in this game , is that every time New Zealand gets within kicking range, the ref will manufacture a penalty. Drives me nuts. 90 % of games lost against the All Blacks are due to penalty conversions.
@grantdewar87122 жыл бұрын
As well as the penalties they give away like clockwork in their 22 to prevent tries. That high shot to Habana case in point. Should have been yellow minimum - then to see Matfield get one for a far less severe tackle in non-try scoring position was a joke.

Cool video! I hadn't seen the legendary Gerrie Brand in the flesh and had heard and read so much about his exploits. Only wished they had filmed his drop kick vs Eng. I have seen Louis Babrow and Danie Craven in a doco on the '37 tour (One and only SA team!). It was good to see Billy Wallace helping with the AB backs, he is a legend for us a generation earlier with the '05 AB Originals British Tour. Shame there isn't any coverage of Bennie Osler and Mark Nicholls in the AB's '28 tour. Mark's exploits were already legendary with the 'Invincibles' of '25 and his match up with Osler is well documented. Also a shame that the great George Nepia couldn't tour in '28, as he would have wowed the crowds on the dry track. If you have any old pre WWII game footage, it would be appreciated. Keep posting these videos! Long may the AB/Bok rivalry continue!
@RealRugby5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback mate! You know your rugby well. For this vid, I focused purely on games won in Nez Zealand, that's why 1928 doesn't feature. My dad told me about Mark Nichols and how good he was. It was ofcourse a travesty that Nepia couldn't tour SA, he was a brilliant player
@waltonsadlier4455 жыл бұрын
All good!! We really only had footage from the NZ perspective and looking at some of the SA collections people are posting it gives us a great view of the old tours to SA. We wouldn't have seen much of the SA Grand Slam tours either and I don't suppose the Brit press would of shown much with them losing all the time. Funny reading how boring and 10 man rugby the Brit press portrayed these teams! You don't tour winning 30+ games and all tests without being a great side!! If it was one of their teams they would be praised big time - and they focus on the 1 or 2 games the tourists lose.
@RealRugby5 жыл бұрын
@@waltonsadlier445 Look at the successful Springbok sides. They were sides that could score tries and had great attacking ability. The notion that the Boks were only ever a 10 man type team is BS...
@waltonsadlier4455 жыл бұрын
Yes I totally agree. You have to be an all round team to be successful. Of the 3 successful touring and series winning teams to NZ, I would rate the '37 team as the best (The '71 Lions 2nd & '86 Wallabies 3rd). They built up the team winning confidence as they went along and had match winners in key positions. '71 Lions very similar and amazing players who went on to feature in '74. The AB's in '71 weren't overawed by them; they were outsmarted by them (Especially Edwards/John combination and the resurgent Welsh backline revival confidence). However the '37 side dominated by the 3rd test and no team would have beaten them. I remember Brabrow in the doco saying that they knew how to beat them and his brace showed the complete confidence they had. Boy Louw and a rampant pack; Craven and his tactical play: and Brand with everything he did. Stuff of legend!! I'll try and find the doco vid, interviews from these men makes a huge difference.

Not so much New Zealand, but Springboks always seem to play against the ref when they're from New Zealand and Aus. A lot of harsh calls come our way. Look at this weekends last minute try to win the game: The ref and TMO looked as if they were trying their best to find a mistake in Jantjies' try when it was clear from the first look that it was fine. Theres no such thing as a 50 50 call when a Kiwi or Ozzie ref is in charge of a Springbok game. At least not in most cases.

If you look at the last 4 matches the referee definitely helped the kiwis getting to the score and I don't care what who says. So many high tackles against the Springboks and it just gets brushed aside with a penalty. If I look at the 50/50 calls the referee definitely knew who he was going to be biased to. So if nz is happy to score points like that then so be it. We Springboks play aggressive rugby and if the rest of the world can't handle it then that's your problem.

At 14:15 Josh Kronfeld should have left Henry Honibal for his No.8 and other forwards and stopped Pieter Rousouw. Instead he tried to get Honibal, who was clearly the distributor and therefore not a major threat while Rousouw chiming in from the short side and Joost Van Der Westhuizen (God bless his soul) angling across posed more of a threat. Credit to Kronfeld though he quickly shifted focus once he realised the primary target was Pieter but could only manage an ineffective lunge on the lanky winger in Rousouw. Andrew Mehrtens wasn't much of a defender so I Kronfeld had his work cut out for himself. That Srpringbok move was copied by a few NZ schools later that year. Inspiring stuff.

This is a terrible vid!!. It should be called 10 knives to the Heart. Yours faithfully, Joe kiwi.

Some of the better knives at least. They are green. Love your lot. Says a lot about yourselves that we can count victories on 10 fingers in NZ.

Under the amateur code the boks were always ahead of the ABs.....the quota ststem destroyed the bok superiorty. ....an d Alistaire coetzee lived up to his pathetic reputation

Don't delude yourself,SA didn't allow coloured players back in the day because of apartheid so they never faced NZs top team so because of that SAs wins in SA will always be tarnished so no the reality is that SA didn't really dominate.
@JacobEdminstin Жыл бұрын
The last one doesn't count because one of the boks were offside
@TheCosmerenaut110 ай бұрын
Oh noooo! Can’t believe one of them were offside what a complete tragedy that definitely hasn’t happened hundreds of games before and that New Zealand have won with! Let us have the win mate
