The sand line, while horrible, makes total sense when you think about this.. Anakin was a 19 year old kid who had never been around a girl he had strong feelings for, never had the chance to flirt. The woman made his heart skip beats, he rambled as many of us did at that age while talking to a girl we were head over heels about. At that point, he wasn't a jedi, he was an awkward teenager.

Padme herself, being the elected queen of Naboo and an extremely young Senator in the galactic Senate was also very sequestered away from the public and probably also had very little experience with romance. (Canonically Padme had two other potential suitors Palo Jemabie and Rush Clovis).
@godofthecripples1237
@godofthecripples1237 Жыл бұрын
I wish that were the case, had the writing leaned into that it would have made sense. But the style of romance depicted was heavily and inspired by old black-and-white sappy soaps. That was an era that had a lot of influence over Star Wars, especially Opera. Hell, look at the titles of the movies. Phantom Menace? That screams Opera. So the writing was very much intentional and meant to be taken seriously.

Honorable mention, I have the high ground. Obi-Wan is playing to Anakins ego by referencing superior position, which Obi-Wan himself overcame famously against Darth Maul. Obi-Wan knows that Anakin has to prove he's better than him and will try his own move against him. And so he's ready for it.
@joermnyc

Yes, and in the Kenobi final fight, Vader doesn’t say it, but after using the force to knock the ground out from under Obi-Wan, and then bury him under stones, he’s striding away like, “I finally have the high ground.”

Obi-Wan is referring to his fight with Darth Maul who had the high ground then - but he wasn't expecting Obi-Wan to force-leap over him. In this case -he's expecting it and warning Anakin not to try the move that he had already used on Maul.

It is always funny to me that people can't accept that Anakin is literally just a socially inept teenager in Episode 2, he has every reason to be cringe anyone else in his situation, with his upbringing, at his age, would be just as cringe if not worse. What I believe Padmé saw in him wasn't what he was saying, it was what he meant by it, what he was trying to verbalize but failing to do so eloquently or subtly, she was able to understand that he didn't grow up like her and that she shouldn't expect him to be as well spoken as her. She knew that he loved her more than anything and everything after Episode 2 proves that to be true.
@wbfaulk

It's always funny to me that people can't accept that George Lucas is literally just incompetent at writing dialogue. Padme doesn't react in any way like it's as awkward as it is. It could even be played as if she found the awkwardness charming. She just reacts to it as if it's a normal thing he might say. Anakin's subtext for that line is obvious and it's genuinely surprising to me that anyone might not realize that he's speaking about his childhood. I'm certain that Padme understood that context. Anyway, there are certainly various ways to rationalize the awfulness of that line, but the most plausible explanation is just that it's the peak example of Lucas's consistently dreadful dialogue.

I really don't like the "mocking Tarkin" explanation. I much prefer my head-canon, which is that with Tarkin she is speaking High Galactic, the language of the aristocracy and Senate (which is also why Padme has a weird pseudo-British accent when addressing the Senate in TPM). Most of the time Leia is speaking Basic, which is the American-accented one.

I think the "nobody is every really gone" line is more about Anakin. Luke knew Anakin was not dead, and that everyone should have a chance at redemption, and he was giving that to his father...so for that same kid (Luke) to think about killing his nephew, was sacrilege to the fans. I think that line was (albeit late) a recognition of that, or an apology of sorts. Same with the whole "A Jedi's weapon deserves more respect.." or whatever it was. Just a director trying to get the fan's favor back. Or not, I don't know, I wasn't in the writer's room.

Unless I'm misremembering things, in Clone Wars, it's shown that the first time Obi-Wan and Grievous encounter each other, Grievous begins the confrontation by saying "Hello there". When he confronts Grievous at his hideout, he's there with the express intention of killing Grievous in order to end the war. And so, he opens their final confrontation by mirroring their first one.

10) Yes, idk how people miss this 9) The Bloodline book's explanation is good but you can still infer this from the film itself 8) Yes and also, notice how limbs are cut off after someone is arrogant. Anakin loses his arm for arrogantly assuming he could beat Dooku or Luke arrogantly believing he could take on Vader, etc. 7) Yes 6) The cave scene is also mirrored in AOTC when Anakin finds his mother in the Tusken camp and ends up slaughtering the Tuskens. 5) Cool detail 4) Padme's death represents the end of freedom and innocence, she was one of the last politicians who truly cared for her people. The death of innocence bit is seen when we see Jar Jar mourn for her, that Gungan represented childish innocence and now he's completely distraught at the site of his friend's corpse. 3) It fits so well because of the way Lucas was trying to write ANH. Originally the ordinary person stepping into a greater world was gonna be a female character but Lucas changed his mind and turned this woman into the princess character that would become Leia, he then made Luke and toyed around with Luke possibly having a brother imprisoned on the Death Star but scrapped that idea, all this made Luke and Leia essentially siblings from the start despite Lucas not thinking of them as such until ROTJ. 2) Yes, people need to know that lines don't exist in isolation, they need context from other lines in order to make sense. 1) Yes but he's also saying that there's still a chance to bring Ben Solo back
@RichO1701e

@@RichO1701e How is it wooden lmao. Padme tells Anakin about her life experiences and ends up talking about the sand on the beach. Anakin wants to keep the conversation going and tells Padme that he doesn't like sand. Anakin doesn't flirt with her until he says "here everything's soft and smooth". Touching her arm while he says this is him telling her she's pretty. The sand line is both about the differences between Anakin and Padme's upbringings and also a set-up to a flirty line. Stop worshiping RLM and think for yourself.

Took idk how many years but im 28 now so whenever AOTC came out till now I felt Id never find someone who understood the line as more than just him complaining. Kinda a way u can tell dumb/fake Star Wars fans vs. real ones i suppose.

Some people (FANS) have waaaaaayyyyyyy too damned much time on their hands. What ever happened to simply enjoying a movie, show or book without nit-picking or pointing out plot holes. Here's an idea.....get a life and move on out yo mommy and daddy's basement.

This star wars stuff has become a bit ridiculous. It's as if Tolkien would write further books simply to justify all the errors he made in the original Lord of the Rings books... I feel we are far from the original star wars... and this will continue. In one word : bullshit

wrt to Leia's accent, it's very much more likely to be a result of changing filming choices. I would say Leia very likely was going to have a british accent and it somehow didn't work, so they had to change it. However, given the budget way the film was made, they couldn't reshoot earlier scenes. Star Wars fans have a tendency to bend over backwards inventing explanations for inconsistencies with the films. It's one reason some find hardcore star wars fans insufferable.

If anyone sees this video, pause it at 7:47 and you'll see the power cord running from Alec Guinness' right sleeve to the bottom of the lightsaber hilt because I'm thinking that there could be a little power pack in the robes that he's wearing.

No.2 - we understood the context of Anakin's history with sand vs Padme's. We got it. It's still SHITE, wooden dialogue written by GL. It's still awful.

I realize it's become the trend to defend Hayden Christiansen as much as possible but part of the reason that whole "sand" line is so historically cringeworthy is his delivery.

I feel he catches a LOT of crap for his dialogue delivery throughout both of the movies but I think most people criticizing it fail to consider is that he most likely was trying to mimic James Earl Jones' cadence as Vader.

@@ghiggs8389 While ultimately poorly executed, if that was the case it would actually make for an interesting approach to the role.

Please stop referring to the Disney trilogy, 95% of SW fans do not care about them and don't consider the canon.

When you buy LucasFilm, you can decide what's canon. In reality, the vast majority of Star Wars fans don't care because they aren't sniveling manbabies. Which is quite funny, considering the target demo for Star Wars is 8-12 year olds.

How gatekeepery of you. 95% of the fanbase aren't self entitled toxic fanbabies , more like maybe 5% of you are Fandumb Menace sheep that can't stop crying about the content LUCASFILM are making under Disney. You don't decide canon you clown
