I think a lot of people starting off in photography think the camera body will be the main thing they need to invest in. I say invest in good lenses first. Then worry about investing in a more expensive body when you are more experienced. Start off small, learn and improve. Then like you said, upgrade when you need to be challenged. Love all your videos!

I started out learning photography using a Samsung Galaxy S2. It's great to start out learning the basics like lighting and composition. Once you get a digital or film camera, your main goal is to learn the equipment you prefer. Once you know your camera inside and out and having learned the basics of lighting and composition, all thats really left to do is tweek what you know to be the best you can be, and like she mentioned in the video, take photos of what your interested in. If you aren't interested in what you are photographing, they aren't going to be as good as they could be.

I recently stumbled upon your videos and its so inspiring seeing someone from my own home state (and almost city too!) doing so well with photography but in a less intimidating way. I am finding myself in a funk and reverting skill wise because I get so depressed and embarrassed looking at other peoples' photos. Lately, if Im feeling especially down Ill watch of few of your videos and they remind to take a step back and not get so in my head. You're so down to earth, refreshing and talented! I started photography when I was 12 or 13, im 20 now and I feel like I plateaued and Im watching everyone around me get better and better and Im stuck.. Learning that you STARTED around my age reminds me that its not too late to grow and learn I just need to put on blinders and focus on my own place in my journey. OvertheBrook Photography was a corny name I threw together when I was young and needed something to call the silly photos i took of my frfiends. Its now the name of a business that I havent been feeeling extremely proud and am working hard to get on track. So i guess this is a long drawn on thank you letter for putting your story on YT and sharing tips and details on your own successes and struggles. Youre an inspiration!

I used a point and click years ago then got a Canon Powershot SD50 for the past 3ish years, and FINALLY got my first DSLR in the form of the Canon Rebel T6i. I'm finally learning about the ins and outs of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. I'm 35 and am wondering if I'm too old to just be learning about these technicalities. I'd really love to do this more because I've always had a thing for photography.

@luckyowl107 жыл бұрын
Nice tutorial of becoming a photographer, Jessica! One little tip to add, to the people which have no idea what they want to shoot it's best to buy a entry-level(maximum 500$, as a careless beginner it's better to have something less heartstoping to break) interchangeable lens camera(body), to speak more English, that's a DSLR(Canon, Nikon) or an mirrorless(Sony) + kit lens(many times these lenses are included with entry level cameras, if not, kit lens are something like 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 or 24-55mm f3.5-5.6, they don't cost much), kit lens are best for beginners because are cheap enough to challenge you to think how to do better photos, good enough to get better photos than with a phone and versatile enough for almost any situation. You should stick some good months with this beginner lens and once you master it so well that you start getting great photos and feel constrained you can get more expensive and good lenses for the type of photos you like doing. I'm searching for a video where you don't complain of how much light it's outside of say something about babies and taking care of things. :)

u don't necessarily need a full frame camera to be consider a professional though right? The Angry Photographer says: "A professional photographer is a master of composition and light manipulation, it is no more complex than this." like in his own words.. i'm just curious
@spoton32788 жыл бұрын
That guy is a douche. If you're a pro, you ideally want a full frame but you don't need one to start.
@TheRealPatCazer8 жыл бұрын
+SpotOn so basically full Frame is a preference, but it's given the label of professionalism when you can achieve the same with crop??
@spoton32788 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Cazer it depends on what you need. If you're shooting sports or wild life, a crop sensor camera will probably be better because of their higher frames per second speeds. Portraits will benefit from full from for a more shallow depth of field. Also, full frame sensors typically do much better in low light situations.
@TheRealPatCazer8 жыл бұрын
+SpotOn but then Pentax k-70 is crop and had 104k? Or 204k in lowlight I think you can do the same with crop I mean obviously full frame has a better pixel sensor area but wouldn't u just have to stand farther for portraits? My friend shot a with a canon t2i and his portraits look professional
@spoton32788 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Cazer I'm guessing your friend would have been shooting with high quality lenses. The lens is more important than the body. You can do great things with a cheap crop body like the rebel series and decent lenses.

I currently have the canon 6D and I LOVE IT. I started off with the canon T2i with a canon 50 mm 1.8. Upgraded to a canon 50mm 1.4. I find lately I still love my f1.4 but I started wanting the sigma 24mm or 24-35. Come to find out I'm GLAD I haven't purchased this lens because it's an 85mm I'm in serious need for for my style. Advice for people, this girl knows what she's talking about!!!!! RESEARCH! Make sure you know want you need. I've got about 7 weeks of saving for the lens so it gives me time to really make a decision. In the meantime I'll be taking my time to perfect my shots with my 50mm 1.4 and editing. Always time to improve!!! Great video!

I agree about everything except two things: 1. Lightroom is not a beginner version of photoshop, it´s just for different purposes. I think most professional photographers actually prefer lightroom when it comes to grading/developing raw-files, while photoshop is used if you´re doing more advanced stuff to the picture like manipulating or removing/adding something for example. 2. You don´t really need a photography book to become a professional, you can learn everything on the internet, which is much cheaper. Save the money for the book and put it into equipment instead (y) Other than that, many good tips here!

I would recommend something like Apple Photos for beginning editing. One can get lost in Lightroom. I know I did at first, and there is still a ton of stuff in Lightoom to learn. Photoshop, on the otherhand was a precursor to Lightroom where one can do literally anything with not just photos but images, whereas Lightroom was specifically designed for photography. Great tips otherwise, and I love your works. I'm the type that prefers natural light photography as well. So your vids are am extreme help to even an intermediate such as myself. 😀 Keep em coming.

When people don't know what body or lens they need, it's fair to say they are NOT ready to be a professional photographer. Gear is largely secondary. A photographer who has reached the level to do paid work would know what gear they need. I'm also surprised you say 50 or 35mm for portraits.... I guess you shoot a lot of full length portraits?
@KralyZC8 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Everyone needs to start off somewhere. Maybe you're just shooting around on your iPhone, have a good eye and have encountered a passion for photography. You can get stuck and overwhelmed on taking that next step. So yeah, you are going to find yourself wondering what camera and equipment to get. Doesn't mean you're going to start charging right away, but there needs to be a starting point and these questions are very valid.
@petermoeller59018 жыл бұрын
KralyZC You are free to disagree. Maybe I should say that my comment is in regards of the title of the video: "10 steps to becoming a PROFESSIONAL photographer". This title actually is misguiding. The advice in this video is aimed at new beginners, people who just start out - who are obviously not ready to shoot professionally.

I've been doing photography for a year now. This video was really well done and helped me out a lot. I've had my T3i for 2 years now and still have some things to learn. I'm hoping to upgrade soon. I really agree with you on taking things slow and learning new techniques before jumping to new and expensive gear. Once again, great job on this. I love your photography :)

Why start with LR and switch to PS? Makes no sense to me, because LR is THE Program for editing Photos.
@Ureyeuh8 жыл бұрын
Most photographers use both to deliver the best possible photos. Plus, Adobe gives you a great price for both now through CC if I'm not mistaken.
@Fabitalism8 жыл бұрын
Uriah Graves That's another topic. And your argument that you get both for a good price makes no sence in this discussion. She said LR is for "beginner" that's why she switched to PS - makes absolutely no Sense to me. These are different world and and they are made for different tasks.
@Ureyeuh8 жыл бұрын
Fabitalism I'm not arguing? I'm just commenting explaining that people typically pay for both because both are used for photo editing. LR is used for light and color, and PS is typically used for manipulation (teethwhitening, sharpening, masking for certain things, etc.) So people typically use both. If someone switches, it's probably because anything you can do in LR you can do in PS.
@Fabitalism8 жыл бұрын
Uriah Graves well, i'm an owner of the CC and i have also LR and PS. I'm just curious that she said LR is for beginners. Two different worlds for different people. They work simultaneously.

specific lenses have their uses, its as simple as, what are you going to focus on most when i comes to photography, lets say you want to take a picture with little to no illumination, then the best would be prime lens, as it has a fixed focus, the pictures will come out a lot more natural and capture some of the best night portraits.

@YourMajesty1437 жыл бұрын
sophia taffera No she doesn't. Jennifer has a NY accent, while she has more of a Midwest accent (Michigan or Chicago). She's more nasally & stretches her A and E vowels, whereas New Yorkers elongate their A and O vowels.

I have a canon 2000d which is great. The lens makes a major difference. I have a 18-55 and 55-250 which are great. I agree with taking pictures outside, it will teach you how to work your cameras settings.

I have a question; when you photograph models etc, does the models paid you to take pictures of them or do you sell the pictures or etc?

Very useful information. There is so much I’d like to learn to do. I have a Godox 860 flash that’s is gathering dust. I will continue to hold off and work on shooting in natural light with the Z6. I will remember to pace my efforts…of course at 60 life starts to demand I pace things whether I want to or not. :-).

It actually all depends on what you want, telephoto generally isn't great for closer portraits as it affects the shape of the face (makes squarer due to distortion) and gives an unrealistic look to people, BUT if used in certain circumstances, it looks great because it compresses the background and if shooting with a shallow depth of field the background gets very blurry and soft looking, which is perfect in circumstances where you don't have an attractive backdrop or scenery behind the subject. It's all a matter of knowing what the effects of each lens does, relative to the distance to the subject (all lenses distort depending on your distance from subject) and understanding how ISO, shutter and f/stops work and the aesthetic they give.

The great thing about canon is if you can learn a 750D or Rebel, if you upgrade to a 6 d, you know the features already. Menu systems are virtually identical! The difference between pro grade and enthusiasts is usually just the sensor. If I was buying canon gear today, I'd buy a used canon 5d mk 2 and some good lenses. You'll get amazing results and spent less than a brand new rebel!

I want to do landscape photography but also taking pictures of people do you have a specific camera that will be good for both ?
@zeynab69456 жыл бұрын
Paulina Medina I have the exact same question 😭
@in2food6 жыл бұрын
No, you don’t need a specific camera. Get the best Nikon, Canon or Sony you can afford. Then, get a wide angle lens for landscapes, a 35mm for families and an 85mm for individuals.

Also this video is more relative to basic gears and stuff, I'd say if you're wanting to become a professional photographer you're a little bit more well versed in the gear information. Honestly the best thing for getting a job as a photographer was actually refining my skills outside of photography (once I had the photography down pat). I started shooting video with my 5D Mark II, which allowed me to learn how to edit video and record audio. I also practiced A LOT with editing and compositing, which is integral as being a photographer. My work began with just assisting people, I first thought I could get work as a freelancer if I worked hard enough - but that wasn't the case when the industry is over saturated with freelancers working for free. So I assisted other photographers endlessly. And because I had skills in other areas, people hired me as it was cheaper than hiring two or three separate people (video/editor/photographer). I then worked in a job casually as a photo editor and occasional wedding assistant for about two years while I studied, working almost strictly in portraiture and fashion. Then I landed a job full time in an advertising firm for large scale campaigns (one of the biggest agencies in the country) as their full time in house photographer, working in areas almost entirely outside of portraiture. So I didn't even work in this field previously, but without question the only reason I got the job was because I could edit extensively, and could show I was flexible with my shooting style and was confident in being capable of undertaking any task. I was partly lucky, but definitely the key to this industry is the more you know outside of photography itself, the more people will want to hire you. Show that you are flexible, that even if you're confident with what you can do, you are always seeking to learn more, so you can adjust to whoever's hiring you's requirements.

Hey! You can find great architecture in Marshall, MI. It's in the top 10 historical towns of the state. I used to live there and I loved just walking around to look at all the different houses. Gothic revival, colonial, Honolulu, hell even the town's fountain is a recreation of aphrodite's fountain. It's all over the place, but it makes for perfect reenactment theme pics lol

The architecture in Michigan really is quite boring and the snow can be troublesome but snow is super pretty and it can act as your flash, it’s very reflective.
