Facing the reality of a federal prison sentence can be an overwhelming experience. I intimately understand the uncertainty and anxiety that come with this phase of life, as I once stood where you are now.
Despite the challenges, preparation is crucial to ensure a smoother transition and a stronger return to society.
The following strategies are not merely tips; they are tried-and-tested methods that our team, including Michael Santos and me, have personally implemented and documented.
1. Document Your Journey and Release Plan:
Start a journal detailing your plans for your time in prison and your aspirations for after your release. Clearly outline the programs you wish to take, the books you want to read, and your career plans post-release.
Share this with key figures such as your judge, probation officer, family, and potential business partners.
2. Establish a Primary Point of Contact:
Choose someone reliable to manage your affairs outside, including your visitation list and financial matters. Ensure this person is committed and organized to avoid miscommunications and additional stress.
3. Understand the Financial Implications:
Be informed about how fines, restitution, or forfeiture can affect your financial status in prison. Surrender with minimal funds to avoid substantial deductions for restitution from your account.
4. Craft a Deliberate Reading List:
Select books that contribute to your personal growth and align with your future goals. Be intentional in your reading, taking notes, and documenting insights that will improve your life after federal prison.
5. Prepare to Oversee Your Business from Federal Prison:
Familiarize yourself with Bureau of Prisons policies to understand how to legally manage your business while incarcerated. The more transparent you are the more successful you will be.
6. Prepare Personal Belongings:
Bring only essentials and understand the rules about personal items in prison. If you require medications, ensure they are documented in your probation report.
7. Address Medical Preparations:
Consult with your doctor to ensure all your medications are documented and in order. Engage in healthier lifestyle choices now to ease the transition into prison life.
8. Develop a Personal Communication Plan:
Decide on a realistic and manageable communication schedule with your family and network. Avoid making promises that are unsustainable to keep morale high and relationships strong.
9. Develop a Quadrant Guide for Decision Making:
Before surrendering, determine how you will spend your time in federal prison.Use a quadrant system to assess high risk/reward and low risk/reward activities that align with your goals.
10. Start an Exercise and Health Plan:
Begin a physical activity regimen now that you can realistically maintain while incarcerated. Focus on low-risk exercises to avoid injury.
