I usually highly prefer JRPG's. However, I liked The Bard's Tale when it originally came out so I thought I would pick this up. It was only $9.99 in the bargain bin. I absolutely loved it. The dialogue was great. Often the fourth wall would be torn down completely. At times the bard would argue with the narrator. So the mechanics were pretty bad, but the concept and story more than made up for it in my opinion.

In the early 2000's there was almost no gay characters that were not stereotyped or over the top. I'm glad to see you enjoyed shadow-hearts 2. It's nice to hear another video gamer be able to relate to the struggle that was (and to some degree still is) the representation of homosexuality.

Both Baten Kaitos games are so good. Yes there are flaws with the battle system and the especially the voice acting from the first one. But the battle system is fun once you get used to it and learn how to make straights. Also, the plot twists are some of the best in video gaming IMO.

Soul Nomad and the World Eater out crazies Disgaea at times. Not to mention Gig is a sight to behold. Lisa the Painful is....well Lisa the Painful. Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, just from the story to the game mechanics. The Atelier Iris Trilogy and Mana Khemia Duology for their unorthodox ideas. MS Saga: A New Dawn because GUNDAMS! I remember having trouble with both secret bosses -- Phantom locked off the Clock Tower area of Neverland (you could not simply travel there directly) and whatever-name that desert boss was made it difficult to access the Cave of Wonders (though you COULD just travel there directly). As for Phantom, it takes a real leap of intuition to identify that the clock in the background ISN'T just part of the background and that it will also react to your spells (i.e. Stop).

Man, i was never good at strategy or tactical rpgs and mainly only went with turn based. Even to this day though, Disgaea is still one of my favorite game franchises from the moment i played it. Mainly due to its throw mechanic to get units where you want them, rather then slowly walk them there. It also made me realize how much i liked to grind out teams until they were strong enough to one shot anything in the game or find broken character/gear/spell combos to do it for me. Sounds weird since this basically means im not playing the game for its difficulty, but hey, this is how i like my games :V

I mean it doesn’t really matter but there isn’t any required bosses in Kingdom Hearts 1 that have a time limit, there is an optional superbosses who does which you can counter with the stop spell (which is quite obscure) but like I said, it’s not mandatory to finish the game.

I love Disgaea and the Shadow Hearts series so much, you don't even know. There's just so much insanity with Disgaea and it's great. I actually still play Disgaea 1 nowadays because I'm trying to get a 100% collection. It's dumb, but I like it. Plus, those huge numbers are really nice to look at. As for Shadow Hearts, Covenant has a really special place in my heart. I loved the first one, but then I played 2 and it was so much better! The humor is great and I really like the battle system.

100% item collection? Yikes. How doth your quest go?
@ThomazSDA
@ThomazSDA 2 жыл бұрын
@@CompassIIDX It's going pretty well actually. I only need FOUR more items. Sadly, these are all in the Use category and therefore much harder to find because you can only find them in the Bonus Gauge. For example, I still need a Legendary ABC Gum, which is rank 1. I managed to get a regular one and collected all the residents by resetting until one appears on the first floor, subduing it and Gency'ing out. I've found that if you want something from the rank item you're in, your best bet is the first 5 floors, after that, the rank goes up too much. In just half an hour of trying, I managed to find like four regular ABC Gums. I'll get it at some point... It's too bad I can't use a Legendary Use item one rank lower than what I need (a Chocolat for example) and then steal it from an Item God. Well, I've never tried, but that would just be weird. Anyway, the comment got a lot longer than I expected haha.

@@ThomazSDA Hey, good luck. I love collection lists in games and the one in the Disgaea 1 ports is particularly well done (although after the original PS2 version, I only played the PSP port, and that was many years ago). I almost never put in the effort of 100%'ing these lists, but I enjoy the possibility that I COULD, and perusing them, watching ???s fill in, and the percentage counter steadily increase is so satisfying. Disgaea's seemed like it would take FOREVER to complete, and must be pretty fun to be closing in. 4 more items, you can do it!

One of the weirdest rpgs I ever played was soul nomad, for the ps2. It was developed by the same people who did disgaea, so the gameplay and art are similar but...you should just play it. It has a weird system where you create parties and place them in mini fields, and those fields give your parties different formations and abilities. There's an evil campaign, your max level is 9999, the units you get in the game don't follow a traditional class system, and that's just scratching the surface. If you can play it, look it up. It's just so bizarre. But it's pretty good. Also, on a less bizarre note, but still unorthodox, summon night for the gameboy advance. The combat system is so gorgeous, the fact that you can puck your character's gender AND IT ACTUALLY MATTERS, as different characters will react the differently to you if you're a boy or a girl, the characters are so endearing, the story is so powerful, it was the first game I ever played with a lesbian pairing, the crafting system, while very simple, really adds to the game, there's a pretty sizeable post game...it's one of my favorites, to this day. Another very weird and very good game, tho not from the same time period, was the world ends with you, for the ds. The game's art, style and music are amazing, the modern setting escapes from the classic fantasy settings of most rpgs, the combat system is CRAZY, with one of the bedt uses of the ds double screen and touchscreen I ever seen in a game, and there's a post game with an entire different story and gameplay, where the characters play alternative roles, as if it's a whole different game.

Colosseum: Road to Freedom, because you put in Gladius - a ps2 gladiator game that many who have played it say to be the best gladiator simulator. Admittedly, its more of an action title, but the RPG mechanics weigh in on how good your gladiator is, depending on your build. The variety in weapons and armor, some of which are enhanced with stat boosts for you (blue), and that as well as boosting the weapon's stats (gold); a game that doesn't hold your hand after being taught the basics; combat that, how I felt, makes you feel like a gladiator as you got better as you are actually judged in game on your performance; the detail of you breaking or cutting off limbs; five different endings. Ughh! Its so - hidden gem? This game feels like it was thrown off the table at first glance. While other games that were released at the time that were praised feel varingly aged and outdated now because of trends and tropes, mechanics and design - this game feels more modern. I wouldn't be surprised that if this game was released today it would be more acclaimed. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the game journos would call it the 'Gladiator Dark Souls' if it did because there is a sort of learning curve to the combat, depending on how fast you learn. Why am I sounding upset-ish? Because X-Play reviewed it, (anyone remember that show?) you can find it on KZbin and once you've played and learned how to play, its - ugh! Its was given a two out of five. Another game in the series was made for the PSP called Gladiator Begins, a more faster pace game because they had to cut details and mechanics that were present in Colosseum as well as making the arena area smaller. Two games that I would recommend for anyone looking for Gladiator games. A third game was released called Clan of Champions... No one talks about it (to my knowledge)... for a good reason.

Kingdom Hearts was definitely a strange concept. Somehow they pulled it off and it really has cut itself into the great JRPG territory, though I'm not the biggest fan of the series. Disgaea has really gotten a sturdy following over time. The art style of the characters and the tactical nature makes these games fun, even if the games can beat your ass with grinding. Even moreso Fire Emblem has gotten very big and its tactical too, and what I'm getting at is that I didn't figure tactical JRPGs would become big deals. I always felt this kind of game would always be hidden gem territory no matter what and many titles now that play like this are well loved. Baton Kaitos for me is a must play and I never have. This game and Origins just seem like incredible titles and they are heavily on my radar.

I played a lot of these games. Although, not one of them did I finish. While Kingdom Hearts is well loved, I found the game not very playable, same deal with Riviera, Baten Kaitos, and Disgaea (though, IMO, this one was the best of the bunch, but creepy kids as a cast doesn't stay interesting for very long). Baten Kaitos had horrific voice acting, and I don't know if it was my copy of the game, but the voice acting sounded like it was spoken into a can over in the next room. Riviera, I can't even recall what made me stop that one, but I think I got stuck on a part, or the amount of grindy gameplay was simply too daunting, that's usually what makes me stop playing RPGs, I remember wanting to like it because it was partially based on my country.

Who needs micro machines when you have Choro Q! LOL I even have the N64 sequel import along with the PS2 caRPG one, think I even burned a Saturn import of yet another iteration. Seems to have a lot of releases over years. I have Rivera on PSP, and didn\t like as much as I thought. I like Sting, ever since Evolution 1 and 2 on Dreamcast- but a lot of their games tend to drag you down once you start- gotta agree with your love or hate of their releases.

WatchAllDavidsVideosChallenge I'll really have to check out Shadow Hearts 2. Out of the numerous games I've played I know that there's little to write home about gay representation. Perhaps Dragon Quest will step up next to have more than just Sylvando. They and other RPGs also still lack in racial diversity as well overall but we are moving into a time where the developers themselves are as diverse as ever and changes will continue.

Man you're so right about Joachim. He's the comic relief character, but the joke isn't that he's gay. The joke is that he's an oddball; he's a wrestler, superhero, vampire, sometimes invisible, uses absurdly large objects he finds on the ground as weapons, and constantly gets put in his place by Ana. And he happens to be canonically gay. And none of the party members are homophobic. Some of the stereotypes involving the Man Festival and the dressmaker / store clerk didn't age super well, but to this day Shadow Hearts 2 is the most progressive JRPG i've ever played in regards to LGBT inclusion, and this was over 15 years ago.

Shadow Hearts 2 was ultra gay and I was obsessed. It has a staggering amount of polish when you compare it to the original as well - yet the combat in both games is fantastic.

At the time it came out, most serious rpg gamers would not play it because they thought it would be too easy and childish. It took several months for people to actually pick it up and start playing. It did become very popular, but it was not at first.
