Thank you very much about your 'warning' about the dangers of tourniquets!! It is a warning that not many people give, especially on You Tube. Most people, including some trained in basic first aid don't know how dangerous they can be if not applied properly! As a retired Paramedic-Firefighter with over 25yrs of field experience, I have, on more than 1 occasion, seen tourniquets applied wrong or used when they weren't needed and the results were not pretty. Personally, I think tourniquets should not be in commercially bought first aid kits or used by anybody who hasn't been properly & extensively trained to apply one. I understand fully the concept of "sometimes ya got to do what ya got to do", but this is a first aid device that can easily, and will cause more injury if used incorrectly. Direct pressure, elevation, and pressure point manipulation will on 99% of injuries stop or slow bleeding enough to get the patient to an emergency facility. Thank you again for giving that warning.

If you have never been trained in battlefield TQ application, many stateside firefighters AND Drs have no idea of how to correctly use a TQ. There have been NUMEROUS studies showing the use of TQs on soldiers who were not able to be evac'D for upwards of 18-22 hours WITH a tq on and had no loss of limb! Additionally your comment of not selling TQs in first aid kits amounts to the thinking from years back that an AED should not be available to the public. The fact you WERE a firefighter for 25 years speaks volumes to me about not having current and up to date info on new and current applications. As far as the "instructor " goes, he needs to make sure he is disseminating current AND accurate information.

@@billschaubel5927 I'm not saying that tourniquets don't work. I am saying that in the hands of someone who is not properly trained to use one makes it dangerous. Like I said, I have seen near catastrophic results of people using them incorrectly. Quick FYI... my Paramedic license and instructor certs are current (I still run with an ALS level volunteer Ambulance svc). I am just one of those who advocates training and maintaining skills.

Well I didn't know how to make cordage but now I learned how to make it from plastic bags which I a great thing since sadly those things are every where on the ground even in trees

tourniquets are actually a last resort procedure to be used only if loss of life will likely occur without one. You should always try a double compression bandage first. try a compression bandage and give this a chance to allow the blood to clot. If it doesnt work then apply a second compression bandage directly over the first. Only after they both fail should you consider a tourniquet, and when doing so, it should be placed as close to the wound as possible on the heart side of the wound.

If I get injured during a hurricane I will need my daughter to know these skills to save my life. If you learn bow drill early the other ways are easier because all fire require the same basics. Matches and lighters are hard in the wind.

It's a bit harsh but watching most inexperienced people start a fire is quite funny. They tend to build an unstable pyramid thing, try to light the fire from the bottom and if they get it going it's usually out in 5 minutes. Far better off laying your big logs at the bottom across 2 sticks so they are off the floor and making a foot square with medium sized sticks. Then put some kindling in the middle and starting your fire. Put new material in to get it established and lay medium sized sticks across the top as it burns. After about 30-60 minutes your big logs will be burning well.

I live in Maryland, do you know how many chemicals are in the bay waters and rivers. Every golf course or home owner the treats their lawn leaks chemical in to the water. Boiling will kill most of the live things in the water, but it needs to be filtered. Give use a video on how to make a filter for water.

If the use of what was a traditionaly gender neutral word that has only been recently co-opted into a point of offense by those with a chip on their shoulder is your lifes biggest problem, then you have no problems at all. As you are unaware of etymotology the word man for the celtic people was a gender neutral term used to refer to the species as a whole. The term woman was used only to make a distinction when talking about children. Thus making a fuss over the general use of the term man, you are actually trying to push for the opposite of what you think you are trying to push for all for the sake of trying to look moral and play for status to a faceless mass that does not care. A translation of 'woman' by the way is 'of man'. I suggest you should learn about words first before throwing ignorant accusations around.

Algorithm I guess. Most people are traditional when they think survival, they think male protector etc even though it's applicable to both now. The fact that so many women (I'd gander 20-35% of the viewership of this video) are looking this stuff up shows that it's not just a guy thing. Lots of girls are looking into outdoors/prepper skills because they like the hobby, or are unsatisfied with the world as it is right now.

Would like to know when you're going to put out a video about the ten survival skills every woman should know. I backpack and camp solo, as do other women I know -- might come in handy, who knows. Already know how to build a debris hut, make an insulated wrap-around sleeping mat from reeds, burn out a bowl, make rudimentary arrows & bows, do a bow drill fire, ID some edible & medicinal plants... not to mention escape & evasion techniques if needed... and other misc. stuff. So... ten survival skills every woman should know? Over the years, I've met a ton of women who are into "survival" skills who would probably like to know, also.
