I had heard that the Bowie/Jagger video was the result of a tech failure. If I recall, it was for a charity event, and they were supposed to have had some set-up where it would show both of them singing together, but they'd be doing it from two different countries. When they tried to test it, there was massive lag that made the videos not sync up at all, so one of them had to fly to where the other one was, and they filmed the video with no prior planning, no rehearsal, no plan on what they wanted to do with it. If this story is accurate, it explains a lot about the state of the video. I still find it a "so bad it's good" sort of thing, though.

It was indeed for Live Aid, the famous 80’s charity concert/live television event consisting of 2 simultaneous live concerts held in Wembly Stadium in London and JFK stadium in Philadelphia I remember seeing this video premier during the live broadcast of the event and they mentioned at the time how the whole video had been filmed in just a couple of hours in a rush to get it ready for the broadcast. The fact that everyone, including The host, now seems to be completely ignorant of this context Kinda saddens me, as it’s the only thing that justifies this relic’s existence at all.

The thing I noticed the first time I saw it and which has always stuck with me is that Mick takes the foreground of every shot they are in simultaneously. Every. Single. Shot. By the end of the video I now knew, with no prior info at the age of 11, that Mick Jagger was a massive, massive ego case who really had trouble sharing. The intervening years haven't provided much in the way of rebuttal.

Fun fact: That "Rock Me Tonite" video actually KILLED Billy Squier's career. See, a lot of his appeal was being a ladykiller. In fairness to this particular video, it was made - like the song itself - in a huge rush for the Live Aid Concert in 1985. That's why it was shot on the cheap. But yes : noble intentions aside ... it sucks.

I read recently a book about the beginnings of MTV called "I Want My MTV" and you're right about the massive amounts of cocaine use in those days. There was a great story about the fact that early on they had no money to pay the crew, so they'd pay them in coke and hide it in the craft service budget. Also, the funniest stories involved not just the usual suspects drug use, but the soft rockers. Steve Porcaro of Toto hates all their videos because they were coked out of their heads when they did them. And their was a story about the manager of Mr. Mister (!) intercepting a Fed Ex package loaded with coke that was meant for the band. A great read, they also talked about the success of The Real World and later Jersey Shore affectively ended them playing music at all. A fun, terrific read.

The video for Bowie and Jagger's Dancing in the Street was shot in one night at the last minute so that it could premier during the Live Aid concert. The original plan was for them to perform a song together with one in London and the other in Philadelphia and the two of them linked by satellite. However, the delay this would case meant that one would have to lip sync his performance, which neither was willing to do. So, they recorded the song and did the video in one night for it to be ready.

Oh yes "Kilroy Was Here." I saw an article in Billboard a couple of weeks ago and Dennis DeYoung was talking about the fact that the rest of Styx had to finally start playing "Mr. Roboto in concert because promoters were demanding it (they hadn't played it in concert apparently for years). He's been playing it in his shows for years. Styx says he's full of shit, no one is "making" them do it, they've just decided to add it to the playlist. DeYoung still thinks it's a masterpiece, the other guys claim they went along with it knowing it was a disaster so that they could finally get rid of him. The thing is it did kill their career, but at the time it sold really well.

Seeing Jonathon Cain play “air keyboards” and having the band sing menacingly in the camera along with enough scenes to fill a “how not to make a music video” book. The 80s were great when it came to hilariously bad videos.

The 80's is a goldmine for bad music videos - one that springs to mind is "Rock You Like A Hurricane" (Scorpions) - it has "sexy" rabid aliens thrashing against a cage. Or "Lick It Up" (Kiss) - Mad Max meets weird softcore. Or the classic Separate Ways (Journey) - bad air keyboards and angry punk girl. On a side note, I have a soft spot for Time Stand Still - wacky video and all. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

I love Rush's "Time Stand Still", but the video was unbelievably hokey. On another note, the director of the music video was Polish filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczynski, who had previously won the 1982 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film with "Tango", an obnoxious and repetitive bunch of experimental nonsense.
