It has to do with taking pride in the roots of your raising. Canelo was very poor. But he felt a great sense of pride to be Mexican like his father. In a sense he feels proud in retrospect to have have those experiences of poverty and that’s what humbles him. Being poor is a very different mindset in working class America and Mexico. You take a lot of pride in what you are and to him he will always be proud of his roots.

My father grew up in poverty in Jalisco in a Pueblo, where he would only be able to eat chicken once a month. My father never blamed his parents or hated his parents for not providing enough. Whenever he talks about his experiences as a child he talks with great pride and appreciation. Like canelo he milked cows and planted corn.
