In the comics sure, but in the cinematic universe? I'm actually sort of hoping that their, "relationship," in Suicide Squad and the few appearances they've had so far is going to turn out to be Joker's manipulation. But so far, they haven't dropped very many hints that it'll turn out that way. Most people don't read the comics, so if they end up making them have a good relationship in the cinematic universe, then people will continue to ship them and try to make their relationships as similar as they can.

Anyone who tries to model their romantic relationships after cartoon villains isn't going to get any more mentally healthy by the cinematic universe acknowledging that it's abusive. What I saw in suicide squad as someone largely unfamiliar with what's cannon or not was very obviously abusive. It's clear she was rendered insane and compliant by a manipulative sociopath as part of his escape plan. It depicts a very fanciful idea of what electroshock does to people, but abusive intent is clear. They don't seem to be romanticizing their relationship, glossing over the abuse as you imply. If fans don't appreciate the magnitude of their abusive relationship, it's because they don't want to see it. They may still be turning a blind eye to abuse in their own lives or families, thinking that's what love is. DC comics is not responsible for this age old problem, people have been struggling to deal with domestic violence for all of human history. We only recently have experts telling us this isn't normal. Victims won't see this as abuse until they are ready to leave.

I feel bad for her in the new 52 storyline because they took away her choice. Joker basically forced her into becoming Harley while in her first origin story, she instead chose herself to become Harley. This self-determination made her character more complex and her actions that much more genuine, crazed, deadly, etc.In both I feel bad for her because of the abuse she suffers at the hands of the joker, but I feel less bad for her in her first origin story because she chose that life for herself. She's still my favorite DC character though.

The general gist of the story is that during the "Injustice" storyline, Harley, who was still working for -- and still infatuated with -- the Joker, managed to get pregnant by him. She realized he was still hung up on beating Batman, to the point he'd never really care for any child he fathered, so Harley took a leave of absense for a year to carry the baby to term. She ended up giving it to her sister to raise, and returned to Joker (who didn't even realize she had gone). Harley would later reveal to Diana Lance (Black Canary) that she still keeps tabs on her daughter, Lucy, who is a normal, happy child who loves "putting tutus on toy cars".

There are really very few of these that they want us to forget. I think the main one their pushing under the rug is that she ever loved joker at all. Half the current stories have been about her getting away from him, which in a way defeats the main purpose of her character: she's crazy and doesn't care about his abuse because of her love for him. Although their relationship wasn't a healthy one, constantly rehashing the "I'm not putting up with him any more" makes her story lose impact. We've heard it before, now go do something without moping about how the joker hurt you. You're still not your own person yet if your main character trait is not loving that guy anymore.

Actually, since the cartoon show birthed the character and all of the subsequent comic backstory is retconned, the only "true" backstory is the one provided by the cartoon. Which is that her name was Harlene Quinzell (Harley Quinn is what it was shortened to by Joker) and she was his psychiatrist at Arkham asylum. She fell in love with him while treating him (Joker actively seduced her, actually) and she willingly succumbed to her obsession and went mad, breaking Joker out of the prison and becoming his partner-in-crime. Joker is, however, abusive towards her and she spends a lot of time torn between loving him and knowing she doesn't deserve the way he treats her.

I honestly don't get the hate for Margot Robbies Harley Quinn I thought she did a decent job in the characters I'll call it true first live action iteration. She captured the personality pretty well. I just don't get the hate for suicide squad really it was three hours long they had to explain it's list of b to e list characters and villains and there were a lot of them all in one movie pretty much which is hard to do.
