That part of the river separates GA from AL and in the 1940s the town right there in AL was wide open gambling. Many soldiers from the army base in Columbus are probably found on the bottom of the river. Look up the movie, The Phenix City Story from the 1940s.

Looks like a Smith & Wesson Model 65, in .357 Magnum caliber. Looks to be made of stainless steel, which will rust slightly after months of immersion. Could be nickel-plated, but the model 65 was only made in stainless steel. That’s my take on the pistol’s identity.

I think it's a S&W Model 629 44 magnum. It has a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. They stopped pinning the barrels and recessing the cylinders in 1982, so that revolver was manufactured over 40 years ago. The S&W revolvers with pinned barrels and a recessed cylinder are more sought out by collectors. It appears to have Pachmayr Presentation Grips on it. It would be awesome if you could keep it and have it restored. The serial number will tell you exactly when it was manufactured.

It was hard to tell from the video, but it looked like a stainless rear sight. That would have been a 66 or 67. I wish he would have opened the cylinder.

@JD-tl7ld I'm from NZ, so finding out these bits of info from people like yourself is very helpful. Thank you 🙂
@cincinnatiking800810 ай бұрын
It's possible it's a Model 66. I posted a picture of it in the Smith and Wesson Facebook group. Most said it's a 629, a few said it could be a 66, but the fact that he called it a "45 magnum" leads me to believe it's a 44 magnum model 629 (no dash). It definitely has a pinned barrel, which makes it a somewhat older revolver. It would have been cool if he opened the cylinder to see the model number.
@faryldaryl397510 ай бұрын
Besides it being a mid-sized frame, despite his exclamations, and considering the fact that the vid clearly showed S&W .357 MAGNUM stamped on the barrel, one might surmise that it's not a .44 Magnum. The stainless sights means it's a M66 no dash or -1, which went out of production in 1982. ETA: And oh yeah, besides the caliber stamping, the shrouded ejector rod is used on Magnums, not .38s, so no it's not an M67.

That revolver has not been down there very long. Months maybe a year tops, it's fairly recent imo. I would think 99% of firearms found underwater were used in crimes. Why else would a person throw a valuable firearm into the water?
