Fun fact: Cleaning your bearings will extend there lifespan a lot way more and will significantly increase performance, lifespan, and speed. Ive had the same longboard for about 4-5 years now and haven’t replaced my bearings once. What I do is buy some car break cleaner and penetrant oil, plastic cups/glass. Then remove the bearings and submerge them into the break cleaner for a few minutes until I see the sediments and rust completely gone. Install the bearings and spray a lot of the penetrant oil while spinning them. Ive had the same abec 5 and doing this every time I see a performance decrease they have lasted and will last a few more years. I didn’t find this on Google, I am talking with personal experience.

Riser or impact pads I find helped prevent pressure cracks which had happened with every board before. I definitely clean my bearings once a month. Griptape cleaner is good to have just in case but if you take care of your board then you won’t need it. It shocks me how much I see people get their board wet in the rain and just step on the board with muddy shoes. You’re losing your pop and your board will be dangerous at this point. I’d never skate a waterlogged board. Also if you really want to conserve your board sand down the edges of your board with the leftover griptape after every couple sessions to prevent razertail and chipping.

Bearing cleaners can be used for skateboarding but I personally use it for longboarding(especially for freeriding/downhill). That's because it does make a difference when going down a hill at 30 to 40 km/h. The griptape cleaner is also something that I use for longboarding(again, freeride/downhill) because the griptape is much more coarse on my freeriding and downhill boards and it does make a huge difference to have clean griptape. My point is is that it isn't really necessary for skateboarding but it's more of a longboarding thing to have those.

I clean bearings a lot, but I'm a yoyoer, not a skater. Generally, you want the best spin time, and a smooth feeling on the end of the string, so cleaning and lubricating your bearings is a must. If they get dust or other particulates in them, it can even cause them to come back accidentally. For high end unresponsive yoyos, they aren't supposed to come back with a pull, hence the name unresponsive, so regular bearing maintenance is pretty important

I ride Bones Swiss 6 Balls and those ain't $15. a set. I bought the Bones cleaning kit because it's very well designed and I like Liberty oil the best. Also, I use 1/8" Pig shock pads, not just for clearance and definitely not for landing impact. I'm almost 59, I do NOT jump! lol But they do smooth out a lot of the 'surface vibration' when riding pool concrete, which is most of what I do and anyone can easily tell the difference but that's just my preference. I want the clearance anyway, so why not smooth out the ride at the same time?

The gummy eraser GT cleaner is a repurposed carpenters consumable. Large sanding belts and discs are expensive, so a quick blast with the eraser cleans debris out of the crevices. It’s a valuable tool and it works well. just rub faster/harder (…) and it does work at bringing life back to the abrasive
@zebraloverbridget3 жыл бұрын
I see that you have never really used a longboard or ridden in dirty/ rainy conditions, because if you have then you'd know that cleaning grip tape is very important. Although, personally, I buy the stuff sold to clean off belt sanders because it is more dense and cleans way better than the stuff sold for grip tape. The price is harder to compare though since the belt sander versions don't shed as much material as quickly. You pay more but get a far superior product. Additionally, If you skate in wet and muddy conditions your bearings will 100% end up locking up eventually. Had that happen to mine and fixed it with WD-40 which is the "wrong" way since it is abrasive and can wear out the balls over time. Knowing that they sell kits with the tools to open a bearing is useful and I may need to pick one up. When you buy expensive ceramic bearings, or anything else that isn't just the standard cheap bearings, then it is worth it to clean them properly. The better bearings probably don't matter much for skateboarding, but on a longboard they can make it take less work to travel the same distance. Try some super cheap and bad bearings if you don't think it makes a difference.

The grip tape cleaner is a belt sander cleaner. One that's been cut down, labeled and sold for five times the price, they actually work great but just cost a couple bucks for one that's a foot long at Harbor Freight. Cleaning bearings is a good idea if you skate in places where they get dirty. Can of PB plaster does a better job. Best rails were always the homemade ones. Shock pads dampen vibration on rougher surfaces, it works. Smooth out the ride. Cell blocks were probably the only risers that saved your board, not sure if they still make them.

I think that bearing cleaners actually do help just because you might get dirt in them (like I do) so that the bearing can spin, if you do don’t have any problems with dirt or water, I wouldn’t recommend them. I also think that skater trainers help, as long as you learn how to cruise first. Then again, tennis balls do work roughly the same, but I do think they help build confidence before trying tricks while rolling cuz most people land their first trick stationary. Everything else; I didn’t really have a problem with.

Reason why I'd use / try skater trainers isn't necessarily cause I'm uncomfortable cruising I just don't want to slip out if I can help it cause nothing is smooth in my neighborhood

For the ramp me and my friends during the summer we would just get a piece of wood and slant it on a speed bump and it worked better

Board guards are good for longboards because sometimes when longboarding you fall of and your board goes flying somewhere. Happened to me many times lol. Once my board went flying into a parked car but luckily it had guards on so neither the board or car was damaged.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm just getting into it, and the very first thing I did with my board was fall backwards, pull a muscle in my leg, and send the board careening into a concrete curb. Def gonna look out for something that can act as those guards on the cheap!!
