I have to haversacks. One is from the US-Army, it´s one of these which you can see in Vietnam war movies. The other one is the haversack of my great grandfather. It´s a Wehrmacht Brotbeutel (the german word for haversack), which he carried in WW2. I have his Gebirgsjägerrucksack (mountaineer rucksack) to. I still use all of them.

Very well thought out haversack!!! Excellent!!! I feel an opinel saw coming on strong!!! Thanks for the insight!!! I’d add instant soup, two long boot shoe laces, 5 mil 55 gallon contractor bag, one gallon zip lock freezer bag and a small signal mirror. A loud metal whistle would go in my first aid kit. Your choices and reasoning are outstanding ... completely beyond reproach!!! Great job!!! Keep the videos coming!!! Have fun, God bless and Merry Christmas!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠👍🤠

Really enjoy your videos. I like the haversack option because it is light weight and yet holds a lot of stuff. Also it’s an easy change from carrying it back and forth to work ... switch out a few items ...and I’m ready for a day in the woods! Great !

Agreed! Dried soup mix is a great addition to the "food" section. You can even make you own with dried veg, noodles, a bullion cube and some dried herbs and spices. Tastes better than Lipton when it's homemade ;)

Great vid. I am using the patrol bag from the south African pattern 70 web gear. For me its comfy and based on what you carry I can pretty much pack it in there. By the way I am very much into old school gear for my bushcrafting.

Nice rounded kit! I love having a haversack. Even when I have a backpack. It's nice to have next to you at the fire with all your essentials in it. I'm working out my design for a leather one. Definitely will throw out the light weight factor but the cool factor should be over the top. I have lots of ideas and features I want to incorporate while not over doing it or lots of clutter. Should be starting the first prototype very soon.

Really dig your gear! Well put together video as well. I believe there are two philosophies when it comes to gear. One is none two is one, and the more you know the less you carry. This is your only video that I've watched so far but as an Eagle Scout I feel like you've have perfectly displayed both of those philosophies. I love how you mention that when carrying the wildlife hatchet you don't find it necessary to carry a big knife, yet you still have a multitool with a small knife as well as an appropriately sized saw in the event that your hatchet goes down. I can't help but shake my head when I see people pull out a Granfors SFA, a quarter inch thick survival knife, and a massive saw and claim that you need all three at all times. Your first aid kit is bit thinner than mine, but honestly I probably carry too much. I think EMT school ruined that for me. My first aid kit doubled in size and has't changed since.

Too many people try to get by on the bare minimum and the vast majority of them that are called to use that kit are going to be absolutely miserable. They don't understand how comfort and morale effects you. You can "get by" with less but there is a sweet spot. Being ultralight and unprepared/miserable is worse than carrying a little extra weight and being generally comfortable. Everyone's tolerance for discomfort is different but don't use the "bare minimum" mentality. You want to be "adequately" prepared but you don't need to bring the kitchen sink. Also don't mess around with sleep. If you can't get comfortable with just a tarp and a sleeping bag/blanket then bring a tent. You will be better off. In general for starting out don't go big. Find a spot you can easily day hike and just take something like a haversack. Keep mostly what you need, some useful odds and ends, and just a few "just in case" items. Then move up to a pack/backpack size. 1-3 days worth of kit and find a camp spot where you can get back to your vehicle in case of emergency and keep some extra stuff in your car. Do that a few times and find out if you need to add food or remove or take out certain kit etc. You'll have a better thought out pack/gear setup than starting with a huge 60L bag and packing it to the gills. The human tendency is that if we have space then we want to fill it. Don't ask if you can "get by" with a piece of kit but rather "will I be comfortable?" find your minimum comfort level by actually being out in the woods (a lake camping spot, national forest, etc is fine. I'm not talking about going out into the Alaskan wilderness to learn this stuff) and then you can make informed decisions and select your kit on the fly based on what necessities and what level of comfort you need.
