I have used this in the 70"s as my school bag. It is from the German Bundeswehr and was called Kampftasche. It is the middle size. I loved it. Perfect size for DIN A 4 paper and books which is the most used size here in germany. I loved this bag because it is really indistroyable.

That makes perfect sense. Whenever I stumble across a rare, intelligently designer piece of service gear, it's German from that era. The sleep system that went with this is second to none.

German army big bag, originally made to carry a radio or rolls of radio cable designed to run it along trenches using the handle. But ended up becoming multi functional. The rear pockets were for radio manuals and maps the front pocket for tools and spares. Yet another epic piece of kit later copied by the allies along with the Jerry can.

Great bag , but ive rheumatoid arthritis bad in my hands , I need bigger buckles ,straps . When I was a kid , my granny made me 1 out of a burlap potato sack, the cover was half of the sack , she used cotton flower sack to line the inside of the bottom. I carried my hunting and fishing stuff,and kitchen matches in old tobacco and snuff tins ,to keep up with everything and keep some things dry . Carbide and Carbide lamp ,a 3 cell flashlight. Grandpa , measured my arms , made me a custom handle for my double bit axe, I made a mask from old saddle leather and a belt for it , sometimes id only come home , when I started getting sickly from exposure. If I hunted in the hills in dry places , id carry water for me and a bottle for my Carbide lamp. Id carry ground coffee, when we had plenty.

Hello. This bag from the west-german Bundeswehr was called "Kampftasche/Gross" witch means "Fightingbag/Big" It was ment to carry equipment like extra clothing, Poncho an such stuff. It was attached at the backside to an H-Type carrying strap - mainly above another little bag called "Kampftasche/Klein" or "Brotbeutel" whitch means "Fightingbag/Small" or "(little)Bread-Pouch" This was something like the US ALICE-Buttpack and has a very long Tradition in the history of german military. At the front of that H-Type strap, two ammopouches were worn, and also a Bayonett or fighting knive and sometimes a Kind of waterbottle-messkit-Kombination. This kombination of different equipment was slightly changed in Material and shape over the years until the 90s. Then the whole carrying and Clothing-System of the, now united, germany, was completely renewed. But those bags are still popular in Germany. They never realy went out of production. Copys are still produced by companys like "Miltec" I hope this was informativ. Greetings from Germany Chris

Looks like there’s a few D-rings missing! The Kamptasche was designed so you could attach a mess kit, and canteen, either on the front of the flap or on the sides, while the little loops like the one you tied the rifle sling to were meant for strapping a blanket roll and shelter onto the pack in a horseshoe shape. (Btw pretty neat adaptation using a rifle sling 😙) The rings at the top back portion beside the handle and the two lower ones were meant to hook on to a Y-strap brace with little spring hooks so you could wear it with a webbing set.

👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. I love watching posts on haversacks and shoulder bags. I have tried using them for outdoor activities but just cannot get used to the strap riding up into my neck when in the cross-chest position .. especially when the bag is loaded up some. So, while I understand and appreciate the versatility of knapsacks, unfortunately they're not for me .. preferring waist packs or little rucksacks. That nowhere detracts from the enjoyment I get watching others using them and what goodies they store inside them 😊. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Hi Simon, the pack is West German military, you can Tel this from the number (it's a NATO stock number) and the 5th & 6th character (12) designates that it was first made in West German. The first 4 number relate to the type which I recon is pouch general purpose, I think not sure of the general purpose bit. Hope this helps.

The flap pocket was for a Bundeswehr Shelter half, in its hood carrier bag, the long pocket with the three buttons is for the tent accessories pouch ( pegs, poles, guy rope).... it is a serviceable pack. The square rings by the closing straps allow you to half the cover flap if you wish to.as you do not have the shelter half in the cover flap.

It is kind of like 'What does the Queen carry in her famous purse?' We are curious because compactness, light weight, and functionality all come most closely together in the musette bag or haversack.
@circedge4 жыл бұрын
Have had the exact same bag, well a slightly different shade maybe, for over 30 years I think. Remembered it last year, thought I'd lost it forever, then this year did some rummaging through the cellar and... there's the bag. Didn't remember sticking it there but noticed why I stopped using it. Got the original shoulder strap but the seam holding the strap to the bag had unraveled. One fix later, it's alright. It's just poorly balanced for carrying in your hand. Sits nicely on the shoulder though. I think you could turn it into a backpack with the strap easily, just slide it through the back sleeve thing, twist and attach to the other side.

@@simonablokeinthewoods i never saw this reply. Just rewatched this. You stated in the video you carry a bush chair. It appears to just be the cloth for it. Also, if no one has identified it yet, here you go, it's a German army combat bag - webbingbabel.blogspot.com/2015/06/bundeswehr-groe-kampftasche.html?m=1

The 5th and 6th digit (12) in the Nato Stock Number printed inside the bag show it is of German production.

Thanks John, yes, it turns out it was a West German field pack 1950s/60s period. A good bag and still widely available in surplus stores in Germany. Cheers and Atb, Simon.

It's amazing what you can carry in such a small sack - it's like a tardis in there Simon. That was a really good look inside a very useful bit of gear. I'm excited to tell you I have found your sack on this blog through the serial number. webbingbabel.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/bundeswehr-groe-kampftasche.html There's a good load of info there that will help in the modification maybe. Great video. Take care. Mark

Wye Explorer - Ha! That’s awesome! I’ve had quite a few comments from people who have worked out what it is/was but these are the first pics I’ve seen! Mil-Tec do a reproduction with a shoulder strap similar to on mine, but the straps on the original look great! Thank you so much!! It’s quite a tardis as you say - certainly big enough for a day out including a few other bits that I didn’t have with me when I filmed- food, tripod etc. Looking forward to modifying it! Atb, Simon.

If you look again on Varusteleka they are selling a "NVA Sturmgepäck combat pack" for under a fiver. The straps on that look like they may fit the BW bag?
@simonablokeinthewoods7 жыл бұрын
FlashPan73 - Thanks mate - I’ve just had a look - they look amazing for the money!! I think you are right - I’m sure those straps would fit - they look quite similar to the ones it had originally. I think I’m going to stick to a shoulder strap for the time being - it’s suits me better for this bag. Thanks for the heads up though - I might get one anyway - for that price it’d be silly not to!! Cheers, Simon.

Looks like some more knowledgeable folks than i have offered NATO explainations but to me it looks like a bag we were issued in the US Army and i believed it was called a mussette bag. We called it a butt pack because it was attached to the rear of our web belt and load carrying harness. Im not sure what it was actually supposed to be used for but we used it essentially like a haversack or day pack and put all manner of kit in it. The fact yours didnt come with a carrying strap makes me believe its something like that. It is about the right size. I could be wrong of course..i was once before in the early 70's 😆. Anyway, I still have mine. 🙂 great video!
@simonablokeinthewoods5 жыл бұрын
I know the very bags you were issued , I used to have one many moons ago! - this is very similar, but a bit wider. It had straps originally and was worn above the webbing as a field pack or West German origin. 👍
@kaylamarie83095 жыл бұрын
@@simonablokeinthewoods Very nice, it's a great piece of kit :-) I still have my original and I also bought an aftermarket one on post at Fort Stewart when I was still in and it is a good bit bigger than the issue pack. The Germans always have some of the best made stuff..if they have a fault it's that they tend to OVER engineer stuff lol.
@gijr20035 жыл бұрын
If you still have yours, then you know it doesn't look like his at all. The M1936 Mussette bag wasn't made in 1962 and it had straps on it.
@kaylamarie83095 жыл бұрын
@@gijr2003 ok...no It is not an exact mirror image of this bag here and I said it looks like it, to me it kind of does..and yes I do still have it, so yeah my comment is opinion based right? The one I got didn't have any straps on it other than the one that keep it closed up. No shoulder strap came with it and it was definitely older and used..I'm guessing Vietnam war era? I heard the term that it was a Mussette bag from someone else in our unit so that's what I always thought it was.. It puts me in mind of this bag, it reminds me of it. Thanks for the history lesson.. I am not nearly so obsessed with these things, to me it's just a cool thing to carry some of my stuff around in. Right now the pack is in my pick up truck under the back seat full of first aid stuff so not like I look at it every day either. Thanks for your reply.
@gijr20035 жыл бұрын
Kayla Marie The first "butt pack" was made in 1956 for the M1956 canvas LBE system. The remake was in 1961, bigger bag section. In 1967 the nylon LBE was made replacing the canvas ones. Then in the 70s ALICE took over. Your logic is a Ford car looks like a Chevy car cause it has two doors and four wheels. I could say it looks like my German WW2 Luftwaffe bread bag, except mine is blue. It has the loops and rings to hold the canteen on front of it, so there fore must be true. A simple google or bing of "usgi butt pack" would have shown that it didn't look the same at all. I always wondered why the mussette bag didn't get used with the M1956 as an extra "backpack" hooked to suspenders. I've done it, works just fine as the M1956 butt pack adapter strap did for butt pack to back pack use.

+Kenneth Skogen - Hi Kenneth, thanks! I’ve had a few comments from people who have done some research - it’s a German field/combat pack from the 1950s/60s. RAKA is the Swedish manufacturer. A German company called Mil-Tec make a modern reproduction of it so you can still get them! Atb, Simon.
