In many countries I visited, the escalator also have no rules of standing on the right or the left. Squat toilets are everywhere in many countries in Asia.
@sola4393 Жыл бұрын
The squat toilets may look weird and disgusting to some people but when you come to think about it, it is more sanitary. The public toilet with seats where any unknown stranger touch it with their butt, then you going to touch it with yours. lol Not until the last few decades there are some better washrooms that has toilet seat paper lining for people to cover the seat and do their business, not all washroom has that even today.

physiology speaking, even though squatting is not as comfortable as the sitting type, it is good for the leg muscle,...
A lot of Chinese said that my sister, who is 9 years older than me, looked much younger than me since I was slimmer. Chinese talk bluntly. Being in the U.S. for years, it took me a while to adjust every time I travel China. Hope you enjoy most of your time in China.

Some of the "dislikes" you said are personal preferences ,I won't comment, but there are a few points that I have,Internet censorship is absolutely necessary in a large country with more than 1.4 billion people, it is the foundation of stable national security, it is one of the reasons that makes China the safest country in the world today, otherwise it is easy to be like the Arab Spring , is instigated by the evil country through the Internet to split the country and cause turmoil and bring misery to the people. I absolutely disagree with your opinion on the squat toilet. I personally prefer the squat toilet because it is more hygienic. If the public toilet is a seated toilet, there are all kinds of people who have sat there,Are you not afraid that these different people have venereal diseases or other diseases? ! This is also my least favorite thing in foreign countries, that is, there is no squat toilet to choose from, I also have to bring my own disposable cushion and disinfectant, but in China, there are two options to see which one you prefer. East and West Cultures are different,In China, someone will ask you whether you are fat or thin,Because he cares about you,He is worried that if you eat too little or too much, it will affect your health. So don't use the western definition of "politeness" to look at different cultures. One of the things you say I don't agree with the most is that you say the UK is a "polite" country? ! For example: Take a look at your British Museum,It is full of robbery and treasures from ancient civilizations all over the world. Without the permission of others, they even blatantly let the world know after taking other people's things, so this is what you call it,Is it "polite"? ! you do not take good care of the lives of the people. The streets are dirty, homeless, drugs are rampant, and gun violence is rampant. For others, you always like to interfere in other country internal affairs... Do you call these "politeness"? ! There is an old saying in China that "one will be punished for his many misdeeds”,look at the situation of the British Empire today, it has become a small British kingdom, but it continues to be arrogant trying to regain its former glory, this is the new era of Britain People, especially young people, should be introspective. I'm sorry I said it so blatantly, but this is indeed my view of the Western style! In the past 5,000 years of history, China has been ranked first in the world in terms of national strength and economy for two-thirds of the time, and the civilization of these thousands of years has not been interrupted to this day,Because China was founded on the basis of “benevolence and virtue”. There are 14 neighboring countries around China. In the Ming Dynasty, it also sent fleets to Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. to do business with them, but we never invaded and colonized them. I think the reason why China can stretch for thousands of years of civilization! I agree with some of the points you mentioned, that is, there are still some elderly people in China who are used to spitting. I think the Chinese government should legislate to fine people who spit, and public toilets should be widely equipped with hand soap, but China is a big country. In a big country ,there are too many problems that are more important than these to be solved, so we can only look forward to it! Thank you for your some constructive comments today,I hope you can integrate more into Chinese culture in China, and give up the framework of Western thinking to understand China. We have some good friends in the UK and have established deep friendships,I hope you learn after success, it can also become a bridge of friendship between China and the UK🙂

Agree with everything except squat toilets. I grew up to squat toilets so have the muscles to bend to it. Aside from this, it's more sanitary. As a woman who now lives in the US, I dislike the non squat toilets because it's just not sanitary to share toilet seats. It's a gymnastic feat trying to use non squat toilets at Grand Central Station in NYC and worry about getting diseases from the dirty seats.
Most of the things you mentioned you don't like about China is common in Asia. About the escalator, it is safer to distribute the weight evenly on both sides instead of concentrating it all on one side.

For the escalator thing, I maybe able to provide some insights. I used to work for an architectural design company and when we design something we constanly check the codes and regulations for dimensions. The max permited height for a stairstep is 0.165m for a densily populated building. The peddle height for an escalator is usually 0.2m which exceed any viable stair design codes. In addition, escalators could not be counted as a stair when planning the fire escape route. So in the regulation layer, escalators are not stairs. In laymans terms, people may get injured walking on an escalator and in case of emergency escalators will often take people right to a hazardous zone(whereas stairs take people to safety zone). That's why many cities in China don't encourage people walking on the escalators. You may also notice when an escalator is not in use, its management often block access to both end of it so people can not use it as a stair. Well that's my explanation.

Really sick of those fake news, I'm happy back to China, to clear my ears and eyes for a bit while. But I will use VPN too when I'm there, some websites and informations are very helpful for study. About judging others, it's difficult for foreigners to accept that. I think it maybe a kind of Chinese culture. But I admit we really should be aware of this, and try to judge less.

As far as the escalator courtesy goes, it seems it is for now, a big challenge, and the same is true for trying to get people stand in a single file at Shanghai Disney or Universal Beijing, etc., China has been rapidly developing in the last thirty or twenty years and courtesies like escalator courtesy or filing single files, etc., will take time for people to learn them.
