As a singaporean, I don't feel offended at all by all the things that you hate. Especially the part where people rushes into the train really pisses me off too. The ones I find most guilty are the older people especially. And when I'm queuing up beside the door ready to get in, some fellow from behind just rushes past me without queuing and goes in. wow that really annoys the hell out of me. Also, I too, occasionally get mad at how terrible some of the cashiers and service staff are - totally acting as if I owe them something

these are the same 2 things (from Ghib's list) that annoy me the most! For customer service, what I dislike the most is when a customer says thank you n the staff just remains silent. Another reaction that I dislike to a less extent is when they reply "welcome". Yes, the usual appropriate response to a "thank you" is "welcome" but in customer service *you* should be the one thanking the customer!

LOL... that bird is the Asian Koel, it's a cuckoo bird that parasitises the many crows in Singapore. That's why it's ubiquitous here. I think most Singaporeans share your sentiment that it's mating call is one of the most annoying things to hear in the morning.

I love my country, but sometimes I wish that people here could be more respectful, more friendly, more please and thank you. I would alway wait for ppl to alight from train n bus (even if they alight from front entrance) , press lift door open door people to get in, but most of the time I do not get any thank you, nor even a nob. And it irritates me when ppl start rushing into the train before I could get out n pushes me bk into the train. And the part about customer service too.. Haha.. And I know right, the food. The food, we have a love and hate relationship too... hahaha...

I’m Singaporean and I love this! Though I should add that I love the 5am bird. In fact when I was younger, the bird would be my natural alarm clock. School starts at 7.30 so I would need to get up around 5.30am to prepare for school. The bird’s call was timely in that sense. Nowadays, the birds don’t call as loudly. The small “forest” that used to be around my home were cut down to make way for more blocks of flats. I no longer hear these birds as often, so when I do, it makes me happy, and reminds me of my childhood.

Hi Ghib! Singaporean here and I do agree with most of the points you've shared, just that in regards to points of 'not waiting for others to alight before boarding the trains' as well as 'dirty hawker toilets', I believe there's actually a pretty interesting rationale behind why it's so. I hope I don't come off as discriminatory neither am I justifying their actions, but most of the people guilty of not waiting for their turns to board the trains, and those who leave toilets dirty seem to be aunties and uncle's way over 60 years of age. As far as these actions shouldn't be applauded, I strongly believe there's also a socio-economical factor as to why it's so. Just a quick search on KZbin about 'Singapore in the 70's' and 'Japan in the 70's', you'd see that the difference in these 2 counties are pretty stark. 70's Japan is already pretty modernised but the 70's of Singapore looks pretty under-developed, even for regional standards. So with that in mind it's important to note that many of these seemingly unruly aunties and uncles grew up and spent most of their adult lives in a Singapore that's vastly different from the one today. In other words unlike Japan, the elderly population of Singapore spent most of their lives in an under-developed country. Their habits mannerism actually depict that of Singapore in a very different time, and that stark contrast with the more socially-conscious younger Singaporeans today actually reflect how fast-moving Singapore's development had been in the past half-century. That also explains why spaces in Singapore that are frequent by elderly, places such as Chinatown, old neighbourhood parks, coffeeshops and etc are dirtier than most other parts of the city. Anyways I hope I don't sound like I'm making excuses for their bad behaviour or that I'm marginalising them. Though admittedly, these behaviour does annoy me sometimes, understanding the historic context behind their socio-economic circumstances actuallys helps me to stay a little more empathetic to their seemingly anti-social behaviour. ☺️☺️

The escalator issue, if at mrt, it is because they are doing refurbishment, which in term will be better in the near future. What I personally hate is that people who stand near to the lift/elevator button but don't help to press the open button to help and allow people such as elderly to enter the lift at their own pace. Just today, I had to help press since the person decided not to help, why stand at the button area when you don't want to help? 🤷‍♂️

One of the escalators at Yishun MRT station opposite NTUC has been under repair for more than half a year. Still not working. People are walking down the stairs w/several bags from supermarket, on high heels, or old folks hobbling down the long flight of stairs. Many shopping malls and office commercial buildings too - escalators are frequently under repair at lunch hrs or at the time when people knock off work had to walk down flights of stairs to get to train station. No wonder chiropractors are setting up shops all over Singapore.

I am the opposite of you. I can't stand people who don't press the close button lol. So in a busy mall, at each level, everyone stands like an idiot waiting for the door to close, unnecessarily prolonging a simple lift ride. Which is why it takes so long to use the lifts. Those standing at the buttons just needs to play a small part to make life better for everyone, but no, the phone is more interesting.

The morning bird and escalator one is so relatable 🤣. Also since I went to Japan last year there’s a few things that I noticed that Japan does better. One of them is the Drivers in Japan are much more respectful towards other motorists and people, like they will use their turn signals every time and stop at the pedestrian crossing all the time where in SG, there are times where cars don’t stop at the ped crossings and don’t use their turn signals all the time.

There are definitely cheaper rental rates depending on location! There isn’t a super huge jump in price from a studio flat to a bigger unit actually. With 5-7k monthly rental, a family of 4 can stay in a posh, fully furnished condo unit near town.

You are localized when you can sleep through that morning bird. Some places it is an evening bird. Usually it is 5 am or 5 pm. The extreme is when your window is next to the tree their whole family of birds live.

I like that Koel bird sound. It used to be in lonely places but because of a lot more urbanisation, the birds began to live in trees around HDB flats. I don't like lizards and cockroaches in my house though. I always have to cover my food and any food rubbish to prevent any lizards from getting near. Another tip, close the windows at dusk time to prevent lizards from getting into the house.

There is no perfect country (Canada included). I miss and visit Singapore almost every year and plan to visit Japan again.

Hi I'm a Singaporean and here are some stuff you might find it helpful : 1. The train, people doesn't rush into train only till when the beep sound comes they start running into the train as if it's avengers or world end. 2. Toilet is never clean, it's only clean in airport or or some city area shopping malls, that's why it's a scam or lie. They just want to give tourist a good image of Singapore. 3. Rent or buying house is expensive as country is small. For Singaporean buying house is almost impossible and you have to even pay by loan or use CPF(another type of money that you work deposit into the account when you work and can only be use to pay for house, medical) sometime also need to pay using loan cause not enough as it's too expensive. 4. Some places doesn't have the customer service that you expect from Japan and even if it does it's no where close Japanese type of customer service. They have the thinking it's not Japan and they don't owe anyone a living and also not a slave. 5. I think I got used to it without thinking about that bird HAHA but it's funny when you talk about it

The smoking and non-smoking areas are just next to each other and for the non-smokers, they have to breath in the smoke while having their meals. So i assume that doesn't irritates you.

Japan probably has the best customer service in the world. Japan is also one of the cleanest countries in the world. Singapore is very good for Asian standard (excluding Japan) and Japan is world-class. I hope I can visit Japan, South Korea and Taiwan someday. I've been to Singapore.

A 2-bedroom condo apt near Somerset was $1500.. in 2006. You can't get prices like that in town anymore. Try being in the Scandinavian countries during the summer.. The birds start chirping at 4 and customer service is virtually non-existent.

Haha for the aircon war thing, I once read somewhere that Japanese people are more eco-friendly and hence they are accustomed to setting their aircons in homes and offices at a higher temperature (even in summer). Therefore, it could be possible that you are more used to a temperature that is less cool (compared to us Singaporeans who tend to complain about the heat and lower the temperature to 24°C or even lower 😅).

There was once in my office, my colleague adjusted the air con temperature to 22 degrees. I like to wear casual in the office so I was freezing. I adjusted it back to a reasonable 25. she was pissed and announced to the office that somebody touched the aircon and she is hot and she is taking off her jacket (which is like a thick one). you dont need a winter jacket in Singapore!

Rental of Singapore HDB flats will not exceed SGD $3000 dollars. Please take note. The highest I have seen for renting a 5 room flat was about $2800 a month.

That rushing into the train before people can leave I too experience it in Japan. There was once I was on a plant attachment for 6 months at Kadoma and I was taking the train to National station to work. Everytime at my stop I would look out to see if there is any old folks. They would just rush in before we could exit and after a week or so I notice other passengers would stand aside when they reach that station.

the escalator stuff... especially in mrt stations, they are doing more maintenance than regular malls. the problem is because the mrt stations have very heavy human traffic and most people prefer to stand on the left side of the escalator, it causes the steps to sink down to the left side due to the weight of the people, hence maintenance is needed more regularly in order to prevent escalator malfunction and we all know how dangerous an escalator malfunction can be. so be glad, when you see escalators are regularly being maintained at the stations you frequent.

@@wy9317 yes, it doesnt matter which side people are advised to stand, it's the culture of needing to leave 1 side of the escalator to be empty so people who want to move faster can do so. but because we have significantly more people who prefer to stand that causes the imbalance on the steps. you cannot force people to all be standing on the escalator or all to be climbing the steps, so the next best thing is to make sure the escalators are well maintained to prevent malfunctions.

Houses here in Singapore are expensive as hell.with 850k,u could get a two story bungalow in US but in Singapore,u could only get a 3,4 rooms hdb flat(public housing flats)

A quick tip for the ants, get the snake powder from Thailand, the cooling one. It contains an ingredient that ants detest and run away from. I used in in my OBS (it’s like a camp) and it kept the ants away from our tents and food !

lmao totally agreed. as a Singaporean, I truly detest the lack of customer service. I, for one, has work in customer service before and though it was 10 per hour, i tried my best to make customers' experience as great as possible. I find it exhausting to be rude to anybody.

I’m a singaporean and trust me. The ants and lizards are annoying. Ants are in my room, my table and even the dining table. The people not waiting for those to exit the train are also annoying. Every time they say, “For quicker boarding and alighting, please wait for people to exit the train first, thank you.” They even put the picture saying to “Please give way” with a picture of passengers waiting for people to exit the train first. They still do this, annoying they can also push you down or something else. The bird also. Every time i walk to work in 6am i keep hearing that black bird named the “Koel Bird”, it keeps going like tweet or some random cry or something. You may sometimes hear us say like for example:”Simi si?” That thing means “What is?” Its called Singlish. Its very hard. If you want lessons, just find it here on KZbin.

humble truth about Singapore...well done! Singapore have a good mix of many nationalities....all brought up differently in their own countries...I believe this is the root of all the social issues in Singapore.. (if you dont believe, look around you in the train, how many percent are true Singaporean?)
