Last year, I went to see my mom for the last time. She lived in another country, was sick with cancer and didn't want to admit she was dying. She still had enough energy to move around her house. Prior to going to visit her I had watched some of your videos decluttering with your mom. I told my mom about decluttering and the importance for others to know why her things are important to her. I told her about a theory of the sweedish death cleanning. I spent 5 days with her full of memories, stories and laughter about silliness of keeping certains items, like she had scarfs scuttered everywhere, every drower we opened there was at least one scarf there 😂 I believe I wouldn't have known how to approach her about her precious things if it were not for the inspiration coming from your videos! Thanks ♡

Shannon, I’m 73 years old and several years ago my husband and I moved to an independent living apt. We moved from a house with about 1800 square feet to our current apartment of just over 1100 square feet. Your guidelines for helping someone downsize (also called declutterring) are spot on. Don’t know how old your Mom is (she looks youthful) but I have to add the one major tip you didn’t mention. Downsizing is much easier over time - in small doses. Because of our current building being under construction, we downsized over a period of approximately two years. Thank goodness we had that much time. Whenever the time comes that your parents decide to move to a smaller place, you both are going to be SO thankful that you have done this process as you have over time and in small doses. Note- we LOVE our new place with all its amenities, new friends, etc. Growing older is a process as is your downsizing. Best wishes to you and your Mom.

Today's show had to be helpful for those who have been thinking about starting the process, as well as those of us who have been moseying along on the process for a while now. This episode was full of honest insights and also illuminated the thought process of people just beginning to strengthen their decluttering muscles. This is just the environment for people who have been put off by the manic intensity of some of the decluttering channels. Shannon, you and your mom have only grown closer in the process. I say, good for you!

My dad held on to his college math textbooks for 50 years, thinking he might get back into teaching someday, despite the fact that math teaching methods changed radically in the 1950s and his textbooks were obsolete. I held on to those textbooks an additional 25 years after his death. After taking pictures of them, I just put them in the recycling bin at the library yesterday. 75 years is long enough to hold on to a broken dream.

I was pushed into getting rid of my belongings and papers to make space for someone else's belongings. I didn't like being pushed. I live with a hoarder. Even though I didn't like being pushed and forced to get rid of my things, I see that after three and a half years of decluttering I see drastic changes that I have less stuff and less papers. Otherwise I wear what I have. I'm now able to organize what I decided to keep and I can easily find what I need. I don't buy clothes constantly. I only buy if I need something. Through my decluttering journey, it became easier to let go of stuff. I feel much lighter and happier with less stuff and less papers.

I just started to help my parents downsize, the plan is for them to move closer to us (house next door) in a year from now. They have a hard time letting go. They perceive it is me and my sister’s childhood stuff that needs to be removed. I did my part in 5-6 hrs or so, my sister has a little more to do (she expects twins though 😅), but that will cover upstairs only. My parents will still need to go through downstairs and basement… I plan my next visit in July, so I can help the for several days (I’m on maternity leave, so can make it work). Watching you and your mom is so helpful, but it’s really not easy to create ownership of this task. And to be very raw, if they don’t do this now, me aand my sis will need to do this the hard way once our parents are gone…it is what it is.

My husband rarely will declutter much of anything unfortunately. However, I have been on a "mission" to help him to get motivated to declutter some things especially in our bedroom where I have to look at his stuff every day. He kept telling me he was going to declutter for about 3 months, and he didn't, so I got 2 empty bins and put them in our bedroom for him to put stuff he wanted to donate, give away or relocate to another area like the garage. LOL He slowly put things in the bins but not as fast as I had hoped. He had plenty of time since he is retired. So, my patience was running thin, so I told him I was helping him and even though he didn't really want me to he relented and let me help him because I gave him several good reasons why he needed to declutter the area. We haven't finished the whole area, but we made a significant dent much to my surprise after 4 hours. We also decluttered a large trash bag full of clothes from his closet on another day. I agree with you about having to "push" a little sometimes. FYI - we had a trash bag full of trash from our bedroom as well.

I do go up and down on weight every 5 years or so normally, but it’s been 5 years and I think I’m gaining more weight. Anyway, that helps me have patience and remember that everyone just has those things they don’t want to let go of. My dad literally pulled out a whole ice cream bucket full of small random stuff from an old junk drawer, like 30 years old, junk drawer!! He really went down memory lane and didn’t want to get rid of the stuff.. examples, plastic airplane clip, clock shaped pencil sharpener, paper clips, plastic lottery number picker (ball falls in a hole to pick the numbers), expired dog food coupons (he let those go and let go of the disintegrating rubber bands).. To me it all looked like trash, but he put it back in the bottom of the pantry to save for another 30 years 😄

Thank you, Shannon, for another inspiring video. I have made it a practice to declutter 1 thing from my home every time I watch one of your videos. I know it’s kind of weird, but your videos and getting rid of some things go hand-in-hand now! My grandmother was Swedish, so I have gone through the Swedish death cleaning thing and have also gotten my home to where it is quite minimal. But I usually find one thing that I can let go of. ❤

I've never thought you were even remotely passive aggressive with your mum, I think the person who said that was watching a different channel 😂. You are clearly such good friends ❤. My mum and I absolutely love watching your videos with your mum, and it has helped my mum to see I'm not the only daughter trying to encourage their mum to get rid of stuff 😂 ❤.
