I’ve been decluttering and minimizing for over eight years. I agree that life is so much better, stress free, and enjoyable. I no longer go shopping as an activity, I no longer even have a desire to buy anything, even groceries are minimized to just what I need right now, not what I might make someday. The best part is that I save money. For the first time I am totally debt free. And it feels good! I have a tidy, organized home, and am able to build my savings account. There are so many benefits to being minimal. I follow several channels and am grateful for each one. Dawn, you have changed my life for the better. Thank you.

I've been obsessed with magazines since I was a teen. I even wanted to be a magazine editor. For Christmas one year I asked for the book (new at that time) Basic Black by Cathy Black (the magazine editor). I still have a collection of magazines from years ago. I think it's partly the fact that tangible magazines are on their way out so it's like no one day I won't be able to buy them! Lol I know but there's just those certain things you can't part ways with! I also have a collection of DVDs. 🥴🤷🏻♀️

One thing that can help make the "trying new things" work better is not to buy the thing unless you know how you're going to use it and that you're going to use it in the next week. So if it's a "I'm going to use that at dinner tonight" give it a go. If it's a " I could use that sometime for something", put it back on the shelf

This past year you have really inspired me. I was raised by two hoarders. My father was an emotional hoarder and my mother was a crazy hoarder who controlled me with it using shame. No food was wasted (in a maniacal way) and no keepsake was ever thrown away. I carried around two large containers of keepsakes my mother started. Last year I went thru them and thought to myself, when is the last time I looked at these and my daughters things, she never even ask about them although I have offered them to her. I got rid of 95% of it. It took 5 lawn bags. I couldn’t believe I was carrying around 5 lawn bags of stuff. I felt like was set free of bondage. I was single for 20 years, I became a kitchen hoarder. My sister in law was amazed at how equipped my kitchen was. But one day I decluttered and realized that these things were good quality but I didn’t use it most of it. I couldn’t believe how much I was holding onto. Since then, I do think every time I out or looking at Amazon, I do think, do I have space for that. When it comes to food, my husband has taught me it’s ok to throw leftovers away or walk away and leave food at the restaurant. It became an anxiety level for me but now I’m ok. My husband tells me he is proud of me. It’s also nice cooking in my kitchen now. I don’t need a lot of pans, gadgets and dinnerware. I realized that my processor does everything these gadgets do and faster.

Dawn, you have no idea how much you have helped me, I’m in my 60’s and wish I learnt all this back in my youth. I had glass placemats that my daughter had brought me yrs ago and had them sitting in my pantry. I decided to get them out and use them. I sat the dinner plate on them while I was dishing out tea, all of a sudden I could hear a crack, had no idea what the noise was coming from. I kept dishing out tea and heard another crack, I realised it was the placemat not coping with heat coming from the plate. At one time I would have put them back in the pantry because they were a gift but I said to my husband can you please put them in the bin because they are cracking. I’m sad that I did but very grateful that I’m at a place in my life that letting things go are ok and not the end of the world

My sweet, well-meaning mother-in-law gave us place mats when our children were young. All that meant was that instead of just wiping the spills off the table I also had to clean the placemats on BOTH SIDES as well as the table. (Kids manage to get food ON and UNDER place mats.) I lost no time disposing of those useless time wasters!

There were constantly dishes in the sink and it was hard to wash your own dish without needing to wash some of theirs in order to use the sink. He was so frustrated. I took all of the extra plates back to my house (they were ours in the first place) and left a plate and bowl for each person. For birthdays, we have asked Grandparents for money, gift cards or an experience. We also make our own birthday cakes together. We usually have family birthday parties. But on "big" numbers like 5, 10, or 15 we do a friend party. We ask for no gifts but if friends want to bring something, we usually ask for gifts for charity. One year we collected Hotwheels for Operation Christmas Child. Another year we asked the kids to bring a can of their favorite soup for the local food pantry. When our kiddos were younger, we celebrated Christmas in July with my husband's side of the family as that is the time we usually get together. We put up a small Christmas tree, drank hot cocoa and had snowball fights with fabric snowballs. So fun and then half of the presents were during summer rather than being overwhelmed at Christmas time. We also did a shared Santa gift like a large Lego set. Friends thought I was crazy but my kids loved it! I also had a friend who thrifted gifts when her kids were younger. No packaging or waste. So many toys out there that are like brand-new. You could even watch the Rudolph movie and ask Santa for gifts from the Island of Misfit Toys!

We thought we purged before we moved? That was nothing! 😂 Our three kids are grown and our last one is getting married in Sept. it feels SO amazing to downsize! I do want another bathroom, however, for guests, and this is totally doable. We have a very large bedroom so we can fit a large cabinet for clothes. I managed a corner, China cabinet that fits in the bedroom to use for a linen closet. Not ideal, but it’s working. The hardest was trying to fold bath towels to fit in a triangular space. I am cooking for one person, so I use small containers that usually hold a sandwich. I stack the containers and put the lids in a large container by type. I use a lot of these because each recipe makes enough for 4-6 servings. By dividing the recipe and putting some in the freezer, this allows for variety in my meals and I don't have to eat meatloaf every night for a week. I also am not a big shopper. My daughter still has her wedding registry online and I use it to choose gifts for birthdays, Christmas, and anniversaries. I have priorities about things I use. I only use pens that do not have caps. I gather up the ones with caps, check them, and donate the good ones to the church or other organizations. I also don't wear slacks unless they have pockets. Others are donated.

Moving is the best motivation for decluttering imo. We moved in late March and spent Jan - March getting rid of stuff as we packed. We were simultaneously downsizing and minimizing. Now we both know and use everything we own. And we have continued to get rid of things as we settle in, realizing that they no longer serve us in this new stage of life (retirement, empty nesters). The local college got all of my business wear for their "new graduates" pantry.

No folded sheets to wrestle folding - (or worse, toss because the elastic broke). Less wash, only one sheet per bed. It's efficient and less expensive (since flat sheets are still cheaper).

Thank you for your channel. My house was filled with junk. When the pandemic hit, I couldn't stand being home with all my junk. In 2020 I started watching your videos and decluttering. It took years. I had so many shoes. Now I own only 1 pair of shoes. I bought them in 2022 and I just replaced them.

One pair? OMGosh, that's extreme! Sorry, that sounded very judgemental, and I don't mean it like that, honestly. I too have too many shoes, and am in the process of weeding them out, but one pair world be hard. I wear my Hokas probably 90% of the time, but in summer I do need a couple of pairs (maybe not the 10 in my closet) of sandals. :)

Right?! My 4yo got a Target gift card for her birthday and taking her to shop with her own money was fun AND I learned a lot about what she would choose for herself.

I never understood gift cards, you take money that is good everywhere and turn it into money only usable in 1 place (store gift cards) I get gift cards from work about every 6 months, have about 9 of them and rarely go where they are accepted
@lindakaymccormick584415 күн бұрын
I think that in past decades, gift cards were considered not personal enough because they required so little thought. Society seems to be over that approach now! I think they’re better than a “personal” gift that may not be liked or used.

Jes Marcy has a video on why we thrift shop, and has a cool idea called the 'catch and release' principle, where the biggest thrill is getting it in your basket. So you carry it round in the basket while you look, you get the thrill of possessing it for a bit, them release it, since you probably didn't really need the item realistically anyway.

I think two sets of sheets per bed is fine. If people are sick or you have people who still wet the bed, the fact is life won't always allow getting those clean right away. Bonus if you live somewhere with both extreme cold and extreme heat. One set can be a cooler set of sheets and the other can be a more flannel type.

I was reluctant to let things go, at first, for fear I would miss the items I got rid of. My clutter helper suggested that I do this simple technique to prove whether an item is taking up valuable space or sitting unused for too long: Every time you use an item, put it back in a specific, but different way. (For the storage containers, we put them with lids on, stored upside down.) Check to see which items have been left untouched after a month.Get rid of unused items or store in long term storage. You most likely will never miss them or can creatively do without them. We went from an entire cabinet full of storage containers down to just 5 and haven't ever needed another one! We did the same thing with our coffee mugs (we love mugs but they were starting to take over our lives. 🤣), we started with all mugs with their handles turned to the left. If we used it, we turned the handle to the right when we put it back in the cupboard. We now have 6 mugs instead of 22! Then we did our shoes, just turned them backwards when we put them on the shelf if we used them. Down from 8 pair to 3! You can apply this technique to almost anything in the house.

Kitchen gadgets are such a waste of money. I believe in a sharp knife ! Most gadgets save a little bit of time & take ages to get clean. And why can't we do things a a slower pace ? I laugh at sports clothes - I walk everywhere in my normal clothes just like people in the past always did.

I'm still going through generational clutter from parents and grandparents, and honestly I feel the disgust creep in. It's a little amusing at this point because I'm not so fearful that it can't be tackled, but it is definitely a process and you have to keep working through it! Speaking of sharing this message, I'm so grateful for the "Decluttering by Faith" Bible study that you and your sister Diana put together. The books and videos are amazing! I have led a small group in our church two times already, and looking forward to starting our third semester. We have many ladies who will attest to this truly life-changing message. I still buy bottled water because our town has issues with pollutants and PFCS, the only way to remove them is through the osmosis process. They said it cleaned up, but then months later we get reports of them or other chemical contaminants after the fact. Keep in mind not everyone has access to clean and safe water, some people are still struggling also with lead contamination in the US.
