As far as I know, the use of "súper" in Spanish has nothing to do with English. The origin of the word "súper" in Spanish comes from Latin, and similarly for other European languages. So this is not a case of English slang being used in Spanish daily conversations. Actually maybe the opposite: it could be Latin slang being used in English conversations :).

english is a romance tongue so it obviously does indeed share some terms with its latin roots, super is definitely one such case as you pointed out.

I really think what you heard in the streets was not 'huevo' but 'hasta luego'. In Spain when you see someone you know in the street and you are in a hurry or you both don't have time to talk at that moment you can say 'hasta luego' like a 'hi' and keep walking. It's very common. It's also used as the original meaning that is 'see you (later)'. Anyway many people say it so fast sometimes that it can sound like 'ta luego' or even like 't luego' and if you're not used to it you can probably think they're saying 'huevo' cause those two words share the same number of letters and the exact same vowels in the same position.

As someone who spent a fair amount of time in Spain (going back a ways...I am no youngster:-) I concur with most of your observations. As a language teacher, I just enjoy the culture and the Spanish mind-set for the most part. They are very "in the moment" in their approach to life, which is very enjoyable. However, I am more of a traditional Spanish cuisine person--just my preference as I avoid chain restaurants like the plague as a general rule. Ingredients in most foods (bread, especially) are much fresher and not so preservative-laden as they can be in the U.S. Súper really is not borrowed from English...I believe other Latin-based languages also utilize that. Sooo wish I could get back there!

Yes, as somebody has mentioned, for us Spain is not so cheap.. well, it depends on where you live. It's sad but many people find it hard to be able to buy a house/flat, and most of us will pay the mortgage until we're really old... Well, I guess there are people who are much worse!! Glad to hear you speak about our country con tanto cariño!;-)

Hi Morgan!

Hola Morgan, fun fact, "super" is not an anglicism. It comes from the latin word "super" meaning on top, over, after or more. It is used as a superlative prefix in spanish to express something is bigger or greater or superior in some way. And yes, I do agree it is a little overused 😅

Love hearing how much you liked it here in almost all your videos. It's a pleasure to have people come and enjoy your home. No problem with liking Taco way but just know that's mexican fast food (we all have our guilts). And Super comes from latin Supra which means more than so all romance tongues use the super prefix. Please come back again and I'll buy you a 20 € wine, 3 € wine is for cooking or mixing with cola. Take care!

100%! What the hell am I still doing in the US? I miss all this stuff. When I came back to the US I had major culture shock and I felt like a Martian. I noticed that Americans were constantly stressed about what everyone else was thinking about them. It's bad. The food in general is just so much more nutritious. I was in much better shape when I lived there. I walked a lot, like everyone else. I didn't see any obese people there, like zero. The women were all so thin. And the booties! Omg perfect lol The kiss thing was cool. The first time women did this to me I was freaked out. But I got used to it and it was weird when I didn't have it anymore. I hung out with some guys from south America there and when I left they all gave me a kiss on the cheek. It was mind blowing to see men really express that kind of friendship. Made me kind of hate the way Americans are so detached. Take me back Morgan! Ugh :)

@Alicante Actress yeah I was not impressed with England. I met a black guy and had a conversation with him. He said that conversation made him realize that he's spent the last 20 years trying to impress everyone around him and make them think he was from a higher class than he actually was. What an oppressive existence most people seem to live there. My partner is from Poland. She left in 2016 when mobs of racist idiots were attacking Poles and other immigrants in the streets. They killed a couple Polish people, just for speaking Polish in public.

I always felt so overdressed when I visited my in-laws in Canada. Like, I'd just go to this supermarket in rural Ontario wearing a regular sundress, which is an everyday sight in Spain, and I'd feel like I was dressing up to a wedding when compared to everyone else. People were wearing workout clothes or stuff that here you simply wouldn't wear outdoors (maybe to take your trash out and that's it). People would stare at me and it was kinda uncomfortable at times, lol. When I visited my in-laws for Christmas dinner (other than being weirded out that it was on the 25th and not on the 24th), I dressed up "normal but nice" as family dinners are occasions where you'd dress up over here. Everyone else was in pyjamas and Christmas sweaters.

Your experience in Madrid can vary greatly depending on where you live. Try to avoid the outskirts, where you will always depends on other peoples ride, and try to be in the m-30 interior, what its called the “almendra central”. Then you will be in an almost walking distance (or at least stroll distance) to anywhere there. public transportation its super dense there too. Its like bein inside the “Portes” in Paris....

Hi Morgan. How did you find your flat in Malasaña? I might have to sign for accommodation before getting a visa, so I want to make sure I don't get scammed. Thank you in advance

Hey I actually have a video about this on my channel:) I go into detail there all about it. I found it through a website called idealista. I highly highly suggest NOT paying or signing anything before seeing it in person. People get scammed way too often. I recommend getting to spain, and renting an air bnb or hostel until you find the perfect place to live!

Maybe one day I can make enough money to visit Spain it looks really nice. I don't know how much a teacher's assistance makes but I can tell you a construction worker makes nowhere near the money to visit Spain

Great video. Just a small note: súper is a Spanish word, not something taken from English that people say to be cool 😉

the two cheek kisses hasn't changed at all, at least here in andalusia. I know because I'm a bit of a germophobe and was kinda hoping people would do it less but honestly it does warm my heart that they didn't.

Thank you very much for your videos, I think you enjoyed Spain very much. By the way "no pasa nada" I bet this expression was born in the 80's, in the "movida madrileña" ;) precisely in Malasaña and all those neighborhoods in the center.

A este video lo único que le falta es que tu perrito diga alguna palabra en español y además de sublime sería extraordinario. 😂😂😍😂😂😂😂 Gracias x el vídeo.

I hear that the language spoken in Spain varies from city to city. Is this true? Now I'm learning Spanish Will I have to learn a completely different language when I get there?

It depends where you go... But you can 100% talk spanish everywhere, its the official language. You also have Basque in the Basque country (bilbao), Catalan in Cataluña (Barcelona)and Valenciano in Alicante and Mallorca (valencia)

Nooo, don't worry! Of course there are different accents, for example in Andalucía they have a strong accent (South of Spain)... We also speak Catalan in the Balearic Islands, Valencia, and Cataluña, but everybody speaks Spanish as well!

In Spain the official language is spanish but there are three co-offical languages and some dialects. You'll find co-official languages in las Vascongadas (vasque language), Galicia (galician language) and Cataluña, Valencia and Islas Baleares (catalan language with some dialect changes depending in the region). In these regions people might mix them up, like any bilingual who's speaking to another bilingual. Everyone speaks spanish, except perhaps the older generation in small towns. There are some assholes who even though they know the official and co-offical language of their region they'll refuse to talk to you in spanish. But then again, these are assholes, so a very little minority, though I imagine they wouldn't do that to foreigners. Of course, accents vary, galician accent is very different from andalusian language and from madrilian accent. And there are some different words used from area to area, but these are more coloquial which you'll learn easily. More than anything, it's kind of like subtle differences between spanish spoken from latin american countries (between themselves there can be differences) and from Spain. If you don't understand a word, they'll just explain it, no one bats an eye because we all know that it might be said differently in other places. Sometimes I have to ask my latin american friends why they're laughing at something I've said, it turns out it can be used in a different way in their country.
