If a series has an anime, I'd highly recommend watching it first before buying a series that you're iffy about! From personal experience, there's so many series I thought I'd like but ended up not liking that much after watching the anime :')

@jolie yes but if you like the anime enough (even with cut out content) there's a high chance that you'll like the manga better! I just said watch the anime first because it's a good way of determining if the manga is something you'd like to spend money on :>
@Silverraine1
@Silverraine1 2 жыл бұрын
@jolie anime sometimes skip a lot of materials, but manga can also skip details if it's adapted from light novels. the advantage of trying the shorter piece first is that you'll have additional material to enjoy when you pick up the original version. anyway even if you don't want to watch the anime first you can try a couple of episodes, or try a few manga chapters online by fan translators.

I’m in agreement with your goal point. Personally, I only buy manga (and other books) that I think I would enjoy. For novels, I buy the first one if it’s a series, and I usually give manga a 3 volume chance before I decide if it’s my thing or not. That usually works for me!

Same, at first I was only interested in MHA because my friends were but when I started to watch the anime from the second season onwards, I was hooked. I’m not one for liking stuff that is similar to the Marvel movies but MHA is the first one I like, currently I own 2 of the spin-off volumes as it’s shorter + they haven’t got an anime and in my opinion it fills in the gaps of some of the characters like Stain. I am someone who is highly intimidated by larger mangas (like Haikyuu) but does own some yet has no plans to buy the full series until moving away to somewhere that sells the books cheaper and where there will be more room for me.
@roseberryy_

I didn't know that buying a complete manga series when you didn't read it first was a thing :0 To me, the only volumes that make me happy to own are the ones that I've already read online or watched the anime of them, my favorite series are the ones I love to collect! And I tend to purchase them 2 by 2 and every now and then, not that often. So I don't really have problems with the money, plus they are cheaper in my country. As for keeping track of my collection, I use an app from the play store, they sure are useful. My only problem is that I tend to start new collections before completing the others, because my priorities change quickly.

Here’s another tip that I learnt from my own mistake! If u are buying from Amazon or even in store sometimes, double check which language it is in. Another tip I’m not sure if she put in the video is that more series isn’t better. That probably doesn’t make sense but when I started collecting I made the mistake of buying multiple series without completing them. Do not do this. I recommend starting off with one series, completing that one and then starting another. I’m saying this because I have yet to finish any one of the ones I have because I have to keep deciding which series I want to expand when I’m on a tight budget. Unless you just pick up a volume when you see it, I think this is a really good tip. now i see that she did put this in the video but ill still keep it here :)

If u want to buy less volumes at a time, I'd advise to look into short series n one volume mangas. Some are pretty good and worthwhile especially when they're cheaper than a 10+ volume series n easier to maintain the space. Not to mention you would be reading more stories well contained in length with a conclusion instead of waiting for long ongoing series.

I tend to buy second hand, especially series no longer in serialisation, so I just go on ebay or amazon's second hand options and choose the cheapest with the best description of the manga condition. It saves a lot of money cause I had manga were I've spent a couple pounds and some that were pennys. I also preorder recent series from amazon cause they tend to lower the price and when it releases you pay the lowest price it was at. It saved me loads of money on getting Berserk Deluxe Editions.

As someone with 666 volumes of manga (not on purpose, it’ll be 670 next week), I agree with all these points. Budgeting, space and realistic goals (collecting for you, not for internet brownie points) are probably the biggest things to always keep in mind if you’re buying/collecting manga. Budgeting especially is the one to watch out for because you can easily spend 200-300 dollars in a single sitting if you aren’t careful. Setting a monthly limit and building from that can really help you, especially in the start.

I've found myself collecting multiple series, and getting sad I only purchased one volume of some of the series at a time. This is different since I haven't read much manga at first, and I was just making sure I liked the series. Anyway, I just want to say I agree! Don't try to keep collecting all your series at once. Pick the ones you always wish you'd bought more of to continue the story. It also seems to make me feel more joy in reading, since you don't have to wait until you get your hands on the next copy.

I went from a big collection of anything-I-could-get-my-hands-on, to having a small collection of series I adore and love to re-read on a regular. Now every time I look at my manga shelf it makes me giddy.

as someone who has quite a lot of manga and 2 shelves, i really recommend a bookcase if possible!! or the type that go on your wall. If you get shelves and don’t have that many hard copies, your books might fall off (mine fall off a lot when I try take one out or I’m just moving them about) - they’re really helpful

I’d love a video on using manga protection. Like those plastic wraps or protective book covers. Like where/how to buy and putting them on, if you notice a difference with them on or without. That type of thing.

thanks KZbin to have recommended me this video! I really liked all the tips you gave us. I have actually collected manga since I was 7 y.o. (my first one was Kilari Revolution!) and during these years I bought both interesting manga and boring ones. The ones I didn't like I sold them to friends or to second-hand shops in my city. I usually buy complete used series to save money and also I don't buy manga that have an anime adaptation, so I don't spoil me anything!

I started reading manga back in the school library and started buying some for myself with my friends and so I've been collecting manga since 2016 I believe! Getting manga recommendation from friends have been a really great way for me to start my collection! If I had an advice to give a begginer it would be to only purchase the manga that makes you happy and not just for the sake of having the popular series that everyone talks about, take your time and enjoy

I like your point about going to stores, I actually do that with new series I become curious about when I want to grow my collection. Sometimes if it's a long series I tend to make I try to read a volume online or so to see if I have hesitations or not. Thank you this was a very useful video for restarting collecting after a long time.

Oh I'm definitely guilty on falling for some of the traps you mentioned lol, one advice I'm really taking into account is focusing on a few series before buying for a lot of new ones, it can be exciting and addicting to start a new series but that only makes your collection full of just slices of stories, better to focus on a few you really like. Now when there are some sales I try to catch up on more volumes of a few i wanna complete so i get some volumes I'm missing. Keeping up with a series as it comes out is a thing too, I'd only recommend this for ones you truly can't wait to read, otherwise you can't take advantage of sales for example and have to pay full price everytime, it's the best way to support the product and artists of course if you really care.

Thanks for the video! I kinda recently started collecting manga, and something important I forgot to think of is the space! I have shelves in my room but I use it for personal stuff, and I had to sacrifice 2 whole shelves for my manga, meaning I had to clean out those shelves, throw some things out, etc. But my dad said he was gonna help me out by putting little shelves on the wall, so it won’t take to much space on the floor! But thanks for the vid, I, myself learned a few things, even if I’m not really new to manga collecting😅

Looking for manga you like at your library is such a good tip and I wish more people talked about it! I've been able to read so many good series through my library entirely for free. Many libraries also have an inter-library loan system that lets you reserve books from other libraries, so if your local branch doesn't have a manga you're looking for, another one in your area might! And many also have digital manga available that you can check out and read on your phone/tablet/laptop. It's great! Perfect for deciding if you want to collect a series too, since it gives you a chance to check stuff out without having to spend any money.

Actually these are good tips for any type of home library. As for manga, if I ever have the chance in my country I would only buy copies of completed manga I already love and would want to reread a few years later. Also I usually stick to a two volume rule - if I don't enjoy it then drop it - but the type of manga I love is slice-of-life fantasy so that might be a factor in helping me pick faster.

The space one is a big one. I stopped collecting manga for a while due to lack of space, but I missed it so much :( I still don't have space for any more bookshelves BUT I am storing my manga neatly in secure plastic storage boxes, and that's an alternate option for those who don't have space! It's not as pretty as being able to see them on the shelves though.

So far, I only have 6 Junji Ito books, Doubt, the first 2 volumes of Judge (seeing if I want to commit) and some that my husband passed to me. I really appreciate this video, and I think it will especially help newer collectors, because you get this excitement and way too much energy about collecting. I almost bought all of Chainsaw Man while ordering Doubt vol 2 and some Ito, and I luckily stopped myself, like breathe. Think about this. There's no rush
