The Flute Practice

Күн бұрын

What are the things you wish you knew about the flute before you started playing the flute? Here are some of the best lessons I have learned about the flute. For a few smiles and perhaps even a few laughs I look at some of the things that really make the flute a unique and special instrument to learn and play. In the end, though, I must remind us that despite everything the flute really still is the best and that I really love it!
The Flute Practice is a fun, supportive, and interactive space that helps flutists from all over the world reach their dream of playing the flute. Change the way you learn the flute and become part of our giant flute family.
Join our flute learning platform here: theflutepracti...
Our learning platform offers:

Just realized #1 means that all that time I've spent brushing my teeth beforehand and not taking in any food or drink while playing to "keep the pads clean", like my band teacher taught, were in vain because ***no saliva gets in the flute***. I could have been snacking on chocolate all this time?!?! My whole life has been a lie.
@michaelwertzy9808
@michaelwertzy9808 5 жыл бұрын
It's not the saliva, it's the natural heavy-duty humidity from the lungs. Get yourself a drying"reamer" tool to make sure the pads don't keep the moisture on them!
@daviddiamond2415
@daviddiamond2415 5 жыл бұрын
Eating chocolate, or anything else, and playing the flute is *_not_* a good idea. Your breath carries airborne particulates. That is why you can smell someone's bad breath or tell what food they had just eaten. That can have a deleterious effect on the pads or metal interior of the flute. For example, the airborne particulates from orange juice are acidic, and can pit your metal. Also, oils and food residues (and perhaps even lipstick) may not be very good for your lip plate. The bottom line is that, unlike saxophonists, you are not spitting directly into the flute. However your breath can carry particulates and gasses that may not be good for the flute. Error on the side of caution, and keep a clean mouth when playing the flute.

I think the flute is one of the most difficult instruments. I play the clarinet, and it's a pretty easy instrument to get sound on for beginners. Obviously, it takes practice to advance on any instrument, but for beginners, I'd say flute is the hardest. However, you don't have to deal with reeds, lucky

Ruushii Sushi Well, everyone is different and has a different style. So, that sucks. :( Some people naturally have good range, which I guess is what your teacher wants? Some are good at emotion, some are good at musicality, and some are good with technicality. I’ve heard of some that blend too much, some that are the soloist type and are too loud/play like the only flute (Me lol). Some people are just naturally better at low notes or high notes. As a flutist, you kinda gotta get used to an amazing range of you want to play professionally. Breathing exercises (ugh how boring, I know I’m sorry) can actually help for you to get better sustained high notes. I (again) suggest practicing high notes because in the beginning they can be really tough. (Tip I wish I knew when I started playing high notes) When you play low notes your head joint should be rolled away from you very slightly, and when you play high notes it should be rolled towards you slightly. It allows for the sound to come out easier and for you to adjust your embouchure (in the beginning, you should eventually get to the point you can just change your embouchure without changing the angle). It took me a year to get comfortable with high notes, and now I often play 3rd octave all the time (1st flute problems). However, if you still hate high notes and plan to play on after high school, you could just tell whoever you play for next that you prefer second flute. Since flute players are so competitive, they’ll most likely put you in second flute. (I’m not sure if you’d prefer some tips or not, since you may already know how to easily switch between octaves, but I’ll shut up now.)

I started playing flute 10 months ago and I’m a sophomore in high school so I’m in marching band at school right now and last year I joined during concert season at the beginning of November after two months of playing and I was already at the level that everybody else was. I also play violin so it was really easy for me to read music already. The thing I’m trying to say is is there is anybody out there who has doubts about playing the flute and you think you aren’t going to be good enough just practice and practice and you can get to a good level if you put hard work into it

Haha, where I live the recorder is called a blockflute (cause of the block it has, you know) and the flute is called a side flute because it goes sideways. Same in French. Recorder is "flute à bec" (flute with beak) or "flute douce" (sweet/soft flute). Concert flute is "flute traversière" (transverse or sideways flute), same as Italian "traverso". "traverser" means to cross from side to side, which is why a traverse in mountaneering is a horizontal climb.

Thanks so much for the humor! I always brush my teeth before playing. I once played with a U.S. Army band flautist (flautist, when music is your day job), and she ate PB&J sandwiches before playing. There was a thin layer of sugar that formed inside of her flute's body. I think of myself as a "flute hobbiest" or "flute collector". When does one breathe during Flight of the Bumblebee? I agree with the breathing guilt 100%!

I've been playing flute on and off for the last 45 years or so after playing clarinet in high school. I did it for myself and not for anyone else. No competition, no pressure to learn specific test pieces, no anything. My flute has a light patina-not tarnish- and I only really wipe it down once in a while. As for breathing, like any woodwind, you breathe when you can. It develops lung capacity over the years which, if you like swimming as I do, means you don't have to come up to take a breath as often. Yes, starting to play any instrument can be frustrating but, you are learning a new language and it will take time and practice to be fluent. After all these years, my flute has become my 'second voice' when life gets wonky and I need a outlet that doesn't include four-letter-words. Above all, have fun playing. BTW, according to Nancy Toff in 'THE FLUTE BOOK' it's FLUTIST.

The first reason why I picked up the flute was : "for fun", and to get self confidence before starting playing accordeon (I can hardly read music on a trebble clef, had a few flutes lessons as a kid, and the instrument is cheaper and easier to handle.) I started with a cheap plastic study flute and a method designed for kids, as to begin again where is stopped about 30 years ago. It only took a few days to fall in love and develop a passion/obsession for this fantastic instrument. And Tatiana's vids are great, both for tachnique and motivation ! I now bought a study flute (with a silver headjoint hehe) and I called her Kyllikki, as a tribute to the beatiful song performed by a 80's band called Leevi and the Leevings. It's one of the first tunes I learnt to play on flute as well, as pop/rock usually have a pretty easy structure :).

Of course if you were in a marching band you know there is no good way to see music so you memorize everything. You are giving me delightful memories, especially about polishing that baby. I have some 15 other instruments--mostly brass--that I've taken up over the past couple years, for fun, and I also have some clarinets and a string bass that I took up decades ago. I was interested in flute because it is played differently from all the other instruments. I understand flute requires the most air of any instrument, so playing my tubas should have provided some getting used to using a lot of air. I also have a Chinese hulusi, or gourd flute, which really isn't a flute. In any case, I'm 71, so no one's going to intimidate me, and I'm not competing against anyone except myself! However, because the flute is a soft instrument, it will be one I can play when I don't want to disturb anyone!

I have been playing flute for 5 years and i am very competitive (even tho i played for 5 years and most played for 2 or 3 years in our school band ). My flute mates are always jealous because i have good tone and learn music faster than them. Not trying to be cocky but i am surprised i am not a section leader or co leader because of my skill? but i understand that my leadership needs work. I get great scoring on my playing tests and know all my scales even tho my section leaders should know their scales by heart which they don't .I find people telling me i am the best flute because of my skills but i hate when people say "why aren't u section leader" or " you should have been section leader"because i find it rude to my section leaders. Even tho i can be kinda cocky i don't tell them that i do better than them because 1 they already know i do best on playing tests and scales 2 i been playing for 5 years and 3 my section leader tell me they are jeauos of my skills and know that i am the best out of the flute group. when you play flute in marching or concet band you go though these things but as a group we still like each other as friends .

Ahh, Mary, I've played clarinet, alto, B-flat, bass,all saxes, oboe, bassoon, all "normal"flutes, alto, baritone, except piccolo, too high for my ears! I've won several competitions, blue & red, solo and duets, which at the time I was very proud of. But the choices of music I was not too happy with. "Best" was pretty cool at the time, Clarinet and flutes, first chair! I also couldn't stand "practicing" at home. Now I live in an apartment, and play guitar with headphones, so as not to be evicted! LOL! I don't know your age, but please always "keep playing!

Hey Mary. I remember being in a band in high school and being concerned about the same thing. I was also not playing first chair although I probably could have been. Looking back, although it was frustrating at the time, I learned humility and how to be a better 2nd player. My advice is to remember that you play, practice and improve so that you can learn and grow and don't need to compare yourself to others for better or worse. The truth is that none of them can play the way you can play and you cannot play the way they play. We all have our unique gifts and voice and the only thing we get to do is grow it and use it. See this time in second chair as a chance to grow and learn those skills. Learning to follow is as important as learning how to lead. There are very specific skills involved in playing 2nd in bands and orchestras and we can lead better when we understand what it feels like to follow. You sound like a talented student and I am very sure your time to shine will come! Good luck 😀

I used to be really competitive in middle school and then when I got to high school I honestly didn't care about chairs or anything like that so I was always confused by the flutes who were super competitive in high school.

Interesting. I have mainly played classical guitar for years. I never had a spot for rythm guitar in a band. Solo stuff like finger picking and electric guitar lead parts have always been my task. Never competitive, I was always training to go against the competitive players anyway. So naturally, the flute was a match. I have picked up a flute a few months ago, now already picking up an intermediate Gemeinhardt. I can say that it was definitely very easy to get used to it compared to guitar because we only ever play one note at a time. But honestly, when you start to learn faster things, some songs can even feel a little bit like every note is a guitar chord. Now, it's already my second main instrument. I'm just always scared to break the thing with my hands because I am used to solo on hard-ass acoustic guitars! I destroyed my first flute's pads after 5-6 months of playing. I really liked your tips, thank you! What I like about being a hobby musician, is that I don't have to learn the stuff with no time to breathe lol!

Hey there. I’m new to the channel, and I’d like so say that these videos are helpful! I’m planning to pick up the flute after getting upset that in fact, the trombone is not that fun. That high note is SO RELATABLE! Us trombones have notes that high too! I’m excited about being able to play 2 instruments. I’m in 7th grade, and I participate in middle school band and high school band. I think that the flute caught my eye when I was really young, but I picked up the tb out of wanting something new and unique. I ONLY DID A GLISS ONCE (gliss = moving the slide along the whole instrument). You and I have the same notes so I have an advantage when it comes to reading the notes. I wish you the best of playing and I hope that I can become a good flute player just like you. :^) cheers! Also I think an appropriate name for a “flutist” would be a “flutician” like musician?

I had noticed the breathing issue - I played oboe for most of the 70s - I knew flautists who would take a whole crotchet to breathe during that Bach piece and thus give that bar 5 beats and not think it wrong or even strange.

YES! On the competition! I bragged about being first chair the flute and I was the best in my class! In 7th grade, I was the only flute player in my class to play in the 8th grade band. In high school, I was on of around 2-4 in Symphonic Band. Only 3 floutists in the entire school (grades 5-12, we all had the same band director) that I couldn't beat for first chair, two were older and one was an awesome student with great skill. There were 6 of us that consistently went to district band. The year only one of us six made it, we blamed it on a judge who hated our shared flute teacher (couldn't touch the one because she was too much of a perfectionist) It was my Junior year so I didn't get a chance at All State band because of that. Made All State my senior year. Yep. I'm competitive to the point I thought first flute part was always the best and hardest part. I learned that's the easiest to play. Now I have to practice harmonizing and making the first flute part sound good too.

Just discovered your channel, and will be binge-watching. You have totally nailed it. :) A couple of things. When I was a young adult (a really long time ago) my flute turned black. Yes, I confess I was one of the compulsive polishers. But later in life, it stopped turning black. I can only guess it's something to do with changing body chemistry. I too have threatened recalcitrant neighbors with the piccolo solo from Stars and Stripes Forever.... :D As for what we call ourselves, I'm with Julius Baker, who famously drew himself up to his full 5 feet 4 inches, stuck his nose in the air, and said, "Neither! It's flutician!" (And then he'd spoil the effect by giggling.) Personally, I never played a flaut in my life, thankyouverymuch. On a slightly more serious note, I didn't realize when I chose flute at age 12 that it is one of the very few band instruments that plays in concert key. I have perfect pitch, and if I had decided to play clarinet or sax, it would have driven me BONKERS to see a different note on the page than what I was hearing. So that's something the flute has in its favor. The couple of times I was asked to play an alto flute part, I had to just finger the notes I saw on the page and ignore what I was hearing.

Hello!!! I played the flute 5 years in high school. I'm 45 yo btw! :D ... yeah... 5 years... and I DID NOT LIKE PLAYING THE FLUTE.... I liked playing music.... but in the orchestra, I've always felt we were, us, the flutists, some kind of weak, wimpy, soft instrument that NOBODY HEAR when the brass section is not completly sedated... or drunk... or absent... or dead... and... the cherry on top of the sunday, is when the director gave a flute solo, in a famous segment of a famous piece, to THE FREAKIN`SUPER TALENTED OBOE GIRL.... that was it... that was the supreme insult... that's the day I quit mentally playing the flute (midway in the last year)... I played the piano 3 years after that... intensely... like 15 to 25 hours a week... and then I quit playing music for 20+ years... 18 months ago... I came back to music... I play the clarinet.... I LOVE IT!!!! I am so happy with the clarinet... and sometimes, I pay attention to my flutist friend (We play in a baptist church! woooo! Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ)... yeah... I pay attention to her playing the flute... she's good.... I like that we have a flute at church... We would be missing a flute if she would not be there.... BUT!!! I am happier on the clarinet!!!! WWWoooooooooooo!!!!!! Listen to this... it`s not me playing... but I can play it... just to put you in the mood... kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3KTp5SmeLOUg9E Salutations to all woodwind players, I love you all!!!!! Having played the saxophone for 20 years before seriously (ok..... maybe not that seriously) playing the flute for a couple months now, I have come to realize that this little beast is incredibly fickle and awe inspiring. And all of the old tricks with the same fingering system suddenly don't work on flute. Or at least not yet. Like middle B is the bad note it has to be played perfectly otherwise it is airy and weird. C# with no keys pressed almost didn't exist until I started practicing just that note and it still sounds like crap. For a brief moment or so I impress myself and then I accidentally move it half an inch and all the sound goes away........ Respect to Flutists. Sax players have it way easier.
