Sydney and Melbourne both have their attractions. Sydney's only nice around the harbour, everywhere else is just a suburban sprawl. Melbourne has character (in the inner suburbs) with the trees and trams. Brisbane used to be a nice big country town with no traffic issues. Then we got invaded in the 1980s by southerners who bought houses at half the price they were in Sydney/Melbourne. Now Brisbane's just a suburban sprawl with congested freeways and no character.

The Daily Mail article written about this video was done with out my permission and made to put me in very bad light. I absolutely love Australia and my time there was amazing. This video was simply explaining the differences for some people who have never been to the other place (Americans to Australia/Australians to America). Please stop getting so butt hurt about an article that I had no say in and no chance to give my comments on a video I made 2+ years ago. I have feelings and the countless hate comments are absolutely unnecessary.

A lot of houses do have insulation. Especially all newly built homes. Central heating isn't in everyone's homes because the cold weather here lasts for such a short time compared to the Northern hemisphere and some people don't worry about it..As for cockroaches?? I haven't seen cockroaches at my house for years. Maybe it's the house you're living in needs fumigating. I saw more in America when I rented there. Maybe you need to organize getting the place you're staying in sprayed. As for being more expensive, our wages are much higher so it's all relative. I didn't like all the tipping that goes on in America because of the low wages. At least here we don't have to deal with that. Tips aren't expected here. Again as to things being more expensive for you, the American dollar is higher than the AU dollar anyway so you wouldn't have been too out of pocket as a traveller, surely.

In terms of the sun, it can be different but the reason is because we are closer to the equator, the sun is more intense, and not only that we are considered a tropical climate, which means that our weather can be all over the place especially with the storms/flash flooding and how different the temperature changes can be in the space of a few days. There was one week where it when from 37 degrees to 22 degrees (98f to 71f)

Easier to understand IMO. If I'm walking down the street with my family and someone suggests hot chips we know automatically they're talking about 'french fries' or usually the thicker hot chips. If I'm in Coles I can ask my mum for chips (or usually 'a packet of chips') and boom, I get crisps. Not to mention how do people that use the term 'french fries' differentiate between thin hot chips and normal thickness hot chips?

It took me six years to acclimatize to the heat . The change in diet is a factor , in Australia I eat more chicken , fish , salad , rice and fruit . I find the dry heat of Perth much easier to cope with than the humidity of Sydney . I'm always cold whenever I return to the UK . Best advice , Slip on a shirt , Slop on sunscreen and Slap on a wide brimmed hat . Wear your sunnies and avoid the heat of the day 1 - 4 pm . Drink plenty of tea or water and avoid beer as a way to rehydrate.

Sydney covers a large area. Apart from checking out the harbor shore line, opera house, bridge, taronga park zoo, its over crowded, roads are mostly jam packed, never get a any park. Hey! This was a great video! I loved it! I was born and have lived here in Australia my whole life so I found this video super interesting to see what your perspective was! :) One thing though, even though some houses do not have insulation, most houses do. And yes the weather is very extreme. Sometimes, in one day it will be super hot and then suddenly a storm will come and it gets super cold. And also, it's interesting cos we call 'Fall' Autumn hehe cos I think nothing falls. And yes we shorten everything haha! They are called diminutives and often end in vowels eg: avo, arvo, servo, cuppa, footy, barbie, mozzie etc. Oh, yeah and when you said 'We'll be right' the first time I didn't understand ahah cos it was so fast! Lol but yeah we do say 'how u going' and 'we'll be right' all in one short breath. It's almost just a saying. And yasss everything is so overpriced its so sad:( but that mean our wages are high. I live in Melbourne and it's also expensive. Like for example, last night I went to a restaurant and we spent $90 between 3 of us. Also, at 7:25 was that a Miranda Sings impersonation because it sounded similar haha!!

I too have live in Australia my whole live, and whilst I have a name that lends itself readily to several common diminutives, they have not been used outside my immediate family, which did use several variations. Actually, the moreI think about it, very few people I know use shortened versions of their names. Emily May: Wages and prices - which comes first? Although I must admit that I would consider $30/head for a reasonably good quality meal to be moderate.

i wouldn't say Sydney is freezing in winter. Sydney city/surrounds itself barely gets to 0 at night and most day time temps are in the mid teens, most mornings around 6am are probably about 6-8 degrees. Nothing compared to London/NYC or anywhere else that has a proper winter. And not to mention there is only about one month of solid cold like the temperatures i've mentioned. 2017 winter was so warm i had a thicker quilt on for like one month only.

I think people think we talk faster than we do because we lengthen some syllables. So with "we'll be right", the "we" and "right" are usually a bit longer. When we exaggerate our accent, words like "right" end up really long and sound like "roight". It makes the shorter syllables sound short and gives our accent a skipping sort of sound. Also, don't compare the rest of Australia to Sydney or Melbourne. They're different. If you haven't taken a trip to other places around Australia, I recommend it. Especially in the more rural areas. Even just heading north or south to Newcastle or Wollongong you'll notice a change even though you're still in the city.

Why do you Americans always move to Sydney/Melbourne. They are super expensive places to live, in or around the Cities. Queensland is the place to be, 2 seasons, wet & dry. Winter is a joke, maybe a week of coldish days. And the sun is still shinning. A burger with the works, is around $6-7, never seen a $14 burger. (Tell'm there dreaming) Aussie reference. Southern states hang shit on it, because there jealous, but they all seem to move up here. If one loves the outdoors life style, Queensland is the place. And contrary to what southerners say, our arts, dining & coffee culture is as good as anywhere in OZ. So future American stayers, check out Queensland & save some money. Gold Coast excluded from my price referencing lol

Go west to the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney to see the orange and yellow colours of fall, also very fresh..... In the mountains or in Sydney gardens there could be a dangerous spider, funnel web or red back, although I have never seen a funnel web.... Harmless spiders, Daddy long legs, occupy the corner spot on many ceilings. ....There is also a very large spider called a huntsman. With legs extended they can be 6-8cm across. They come inside and hang around lights to catch insects. They don't attack but could give a nasty bite if cornered. On a slippery floor they are likely to jump because they cant get a grip, but are only trying to get away...Cockroaches are usually the small type, but the big variety come out in the hot weather and are able to fly a bit. Sydney was once one of the nicest places a person could hope to live, but there are so many people now it is hard to enjoy what it has to offer and its high priced.

You’re spot on about the way we shorten things and condense some phrases. I think though that the title should have said “before moving to Sydney” since most of what you said doesn’t apply to rest of the populated parts of the country. Actually, some of it doesn’t even apply to many areas of Sydney either. For example: Generally only older cheap housing isn’t insulated or heated properly. I bought a really good quality burger for $8 yesterday . We don’t really see “fall” in the city because like in most cities around the world, we don’t have a lot of deciduous trees. For that matter we also have deserts, arid plains and tropical areas that are just like many places in the USA that don’t experience “fall” either. As for the hole in the ozone. It doesn’t actually make the sun hotter, it just allows a higher level of UV radiation to filter through making us more vulnerable to developing skin cancer if we don’t take sensible precautions. I actually doesn’t even need to be hot for this to happen which is why school kids wear sun hats during winter.

Loved the video! Just wanted to make a point, with the overcharging, food specifically, in Australia we don’t tip which takes about 20% on average off the pricing, also the conversion rate is about 1.28 US to AUD at the moment, furthermore GST or tax is included in our prices so if you pay $7 for a burger in America you’re actually paying $8.96 Australian dollars then you have to pay another 10% in tax in America upping the cost to $9.85, then in America you might tip around 20% on average upping the final cost of a burger in America to $12 AUD all inclusive. Which is pretty close to what you’d pay normally in Australia for a burger. Plus our foods better in the inner cities which would make it more expensive than usual. Anyways thanks for the great content!

Hi. So I live in Australia and thought I should clear some things up :) So first of all, be sure to understand that the things she is explaining refers to Sydney only, not all states. Like for example Qld does not get cold. Like ever. It is really hot in Qld all year haha. Also yes some states is Aus don’t experience the AUTUMN (not fall) change leaves but some states do - like South Australia. In SA the leaves change colour to red/orange and fall. secondly yes we shorten everything and it’s bloody good cause ya know then it’s quicker to say things and get things done :) Ps with the money thing don’t forget the money exchange is different for each country, like $5 in one country could be $10 in another. Also I reckon things are more expensive because they are better quality/more organic as australia gets its produce from local farmers and company and not cheap factories. Anyway I hope you are enjoying living here :)

Our houses do have insulation 😂😂 not sure where you got that one from! Also I think everything seems so expensive for you is because you moved to the most expensive city in Aus, cool video but!

Autumn very different in South Australia. Dry. Not rainy. Warm days cold nights . And insulation. Generally insufficient. Eaves generally missing. Private or individual builders build well insulated homes but the average profit based company does not as a matter of course install double glazed windows or adequate wall insulation. Ceiling only.

Melbourne isn't colder, Sydney gets oceanic breeze during the summer which makes some summer days cooler than Melbourne's during those nasty heatwaves. Also the ranges behind Sydney area much taller extending over 1000m which brings snow to them and often ice to the west of Sydney. I've been in Richmond, Sydney west and it was -2 in the morning. I don't think Melbourne gets that at all? Either way both climates are rather similar with Sydney being the more temperate city.

Hey Elizabeth, come to Melbourne. Not as hot, more stylish and we have proper seasons. Agree with most of what you said actually. Hopefully you get out to see some of the Country outside of the main cities as that is very different. Go bush.

unlike America we include gst into the cost of food and products so thats why many people think food is over priced plus it depends on the location you live in Australia. prices change due to quality and location

Tasmania and South Australia have brutally cold winters, Sydney is relatively mild. The shortening of words occurs more in some locations and demographics.

Yep our washing literally dries in like 2 minutes in summer. Btw Sydney doesn’t get that cold, I live out in the central west and it gets down to around -10 C lol. Also, if ur house doesn’t have insulation YOU NEED TO MOVE BECAUSE THAT’S NOT NORMAL😂😂😂 and yeah we do shorten everything haha oh and it’s really only in largely-populated cities that the fashion sense is good. Trust me out in the country it’s BOGANS GALORE😂 I used to live in Sydney so that’s what I’ve noticed. And yeah our stuff is so over-priced cause the government is so freaking selfish these days😂😂😂
